1.03 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
A. LEED Requirements:
1. Provide wood based materials and products which are certified in accordance with the Forest Stewardship Council's (FSC) Principles and Criteria for wood building components.
2. Products supplied as part of this section shall contain no added urea-formaldehyde resins. Laminated adhesives used to fabricate on-site and shop-applied composite wood assemblies shall contain no urea-formaldehyde resins.
3. Give preference to products extracted/harvested/recovered and manufactured within
800 km (500 miles) of the project site.
1.04 SUBMITTALS
A. Product Data: Provide technical data on wood preservative materials and application instructions.
B. Manufacturer's Certificate: Certify that wood products supplied for rough carpentry meet or exceed specified requirements.
C. LEED Submittals:
1. Submit applicable LEED Submittal Form for each different product made of sustainably harvested wood as well as locally-sourced wood, as specified in Section
01355. Provide Chain-of-Custody (COC) certifications as part of the submission.
2. Submit applicable LEED Submittal Form for each different product showing no urea-formaldehyde resins were used in products of this section as specified in
Section 01355 and 01363.
3. Submit applicable LEED Submittal Form for each different product extracted/harvested/recovered and manufactured within 800 km (500 miles) of the project site.
1.05 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Lumber: Comply with PS 20 and approved grading rules and inspection agencies.
1. Lumber of other species or grades, or graded by other agencies, is acceptable provided structural and appearance characteristics are equivalent to or better than products specified.
1.06 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
A. General: Cover wood products to protect against moisture. Support stacked products to prevent deformation and to allow air circulation.
B. Fire Retardant Treated Wood: Prevent exposure to precipitation during shipping, storage, or installation.
PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.01 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
A. Dimension Lumber: Comply with PS 20 and requirements of specified grading agencies.
1. If no species is specified, provide any species graded by the agency specified; if no

grading agency is specified, provide lumber graded by any grading agency meeting the specified requirements.
2. Grading Agency: Any grading agency whose rules are approved by the Board of
Review, American Lumber Standard Committee (www.alsc.org) and who provides grading service for the species and grade specified; provide lumber stamped with grade mark unless otherwise indicated.
B. Lumber fabricated from old growth timber is not permitted.
C. Provide sustainably harvested wood; see Section 01600 for requirements.
D. Provide products containing no urea-formaldehyde resins, including laminating adhesives used on site.
E. Provide wood harvested within a 804 km (500 mile) radius of the project site; see
Section 01600 for requirements for locally-sourced products.
2.02 DIMENSION LUMBER FOR CONCEALED APPLICATIONS
A. Grading Agency: Southern Pine Inspection Bureau, Inc. (SPIB).
B. Sizes: Nominal sizes as indicated on drawings, S4S.
C. Moisture Content: S-dry or MC19.
D. Miscellaneous Framing, Blocking, Nailers, Grounds, and Furring:
1. Lumber: S4S, No. 2 or Standard Grade.
2. Boards: Standard or No. 3.
E. Miscellaneous Blocking, Furring, and Nailers:
1. Lumber: S4S, No. 1 or Construction Grade.
2. Boards: Standard or No. 3.
2.03 CONSTRUCTION PANELS
A. Communications and Electrical Room Mounting Boards: PS 1 A-D plywood, or medium density fiberboard; 19 mm (3/4 inch) thick; flame spread index of 25 or less, smoke developed index of 450 or less, when tested in accordance with ASTM E 84.
B. Other Applications:
1. Concealed Plywood: PS 1, B-B Plugged, exterior grade.
2. Exposed Plywood: PS 1, A-B, interior grade.
3. Other Locations: PS 1, C-D Plugged or better.
4. Electrical Component Mounting: APA rated sheathing.
2.04 ACCESSORIES
A. Fasteners and Anchors:
1. Fasteners: Hot-dipped galvanized steel per ASTM A 153/A 153M (per ASTM
A153) steel for high humidity and treated wood locations, unfinished steel elsewhere.
2.05 FACTORY WOOD TREATMENT
A. Treated Lumber and Plywood: Comply with requirements of AWPA U1 - Use
REPLACE TROOP TRAINING QUARTERS 06100 - 4
Category System for wood treatments determined by use categories, expected service conditions, and specific applications.
1. Fire-Retardant Treated Wood: Mark each piece of wood with producer's stamp indicating compliance with specified requirements.
B. Fire Retardant Treatment:
1. Interior Type A: AWPA Use Category UCFA, Commodity Specification H
(Treatment C20 for lumber and C27 for plywood), low temperature (low hygroscopic) type, chemically treated and pressure impregnated; capable of providing a maximum flame spread rating of 25 when tested in accordance with
ASTM E 84, with no evidence of significant combustion when test is extended for an additional 20 minutes.
a. Kiln dry wood after treatment to a maximum moisture content of 19 percent for lumber and 15 percent for plywood.
b. Treat rough carpentry items as indicated .
c. Do not use treated wood in applications exposed to weather or where the wood may become wet.
C. Preservative Pressure Treatment of Plywood Above Grade: AWPA Use Category UC2 and UC3B, Commodity Specification F (Treatment C9) using waterborne preservative to 4.0 kg/cu m (0.25 lb/cu ft) retention.
1. Kiln dry plywood after treatment to maximum moisture content of 19 percent.
2. Treat plywood in contact with roofing, flashing, or waterproofing.
3. Treat plywood in contact with masonry or concrete.
4. Treat plywood in other locations as indicated.
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.01 PREPARATION
A. Coordinate installation of rough carpentry members specified in other sections.
3.02 INSTALLATION - GENERAL
A. Select material sizes to minimize waste.
B. Reuse scrap to the greatest extent possible; clearly separate scrap for use on site as accessory components, including: shims, bracing, and blocking.
C. Where treated wood is used on interior, provide temporary ventilation during and immediately after installation sufficient to remove indoor air contaminants.
3.03 BLOCKING, NAILERS, AND SUPPORTS
A. Provide framing and blocking members as indicated or as required to support finishes, fixtures, specialty items, and trim.
B. In walls, provide blocking attached to studs as backing and support for wall-mounted items, unless item can be securely fastened to two or more studs or other method of support is explicitly indicated.
C. Specifically, provide the following non-structural framing and blocking:
1. Cabinets and shelf supports.

2. Wall brackets.
3. Handrails.
4. Grab bars.
5. Towel and bath accessories.
6. Wall-mounted door stops.
7. Chalkboards and marker boards.
8. Joints of rigid wall coverings that occur between studs.
3.04 INSTALLATION OF CONSTRUCTION PANELS
A. Communications and Electrical Room Mounting Boards: Secure with screws to studs with edges over firm bearing; space fasteners at maximum 610 mm (24 inches) on center on all edges and into studs in field of board.
1. At fire-rated walls, install board over wall board indicated as part of the fire-rated assembly.
2. Where boards are indicated as full floor-to-ceiling height, install with long edge of board parallel to studs.
3. Install adjacent boards without gaps.
3.05 SITE APPLIED WOOD TREATMENT
A. Apply preservative treatment compatible with factory applied treatment at site-sawn cuts, complying with manufacturer's instructions.
B. Allow preservative to dry prior to erecting members.
3.06 TOLERANCES
A. Framing Members: 6 mm (1/4 inch) from true position, maximum.
B. Variation from Plane (Other than Floors): 2 mm/m (1/4 inch in 10 feet) maximum, and
7 mm in 10 m (1/4 inch in 30 feet) maximum.
3.07 CLEANING
A. Waste Disposal: Comply with the requirements of Section 01524.
1. Comply with applicable regulations.
2. Do not burn scrap on project site.
3. Do not burn scraps that have been pressure treated.
4. Do not send materials treated with pentachlorophenol, CCA, or ACA to co-generation facilities or “waste-to-energy” facilities.
B. Prevent sawdust and wood shavings from entering the storm drainage system.

FINISH CARPENTRY
1.01 SUMMARY

2.02 WOOD-BASED COMPONENTS

2.06 FABRICATION
A. Shop assemble work for delivery to site, permitting passage through building openings.
B. When necessary to cut and fit on site, provide materials with ample allowance for cutting. Provide trim for scribing and site cutting.
2.07 SHOP FINISHING
A. Sand work smooth and set exposed nails and screws.
B. Apply wood filler in exposed nail and screw indentations.
C. On items to receive transparent finishes, use wood filler that matches surrounding surfaces and is of type recommended for the applicable finish.
D. Finish work in accordance with AWI Section 1500 System TR-2 (Transparent).
E. Prime paint surfaces in contact with cementitious materials.
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.01 EXAMINATION
A. Verify adequacy of backing and support framing.
B. Verify mechanical, electrical, and building items affecting work of this section are placed and ready to receive this work.
3.02 INSTALLATION
A. Set and secure materials and components in place, plumb and level.
B. Carefully scribe work abutting other components, with maximum gaps of 1 mm (1/32 inch). Do not use additional overlay trim to conceal larger gaps.
3.03 PREPARATION FOR SITE FINISHING
A. Set exposed fasteners. Apply wood filler in exposed fastener indentations. Sand work smooth.
B. Site Finishing: See Section 09900.
C. Before installation, prime paint surfaces of items or assemblies to be in contact with cementitious materials.
3.04 TOLERANCES
A. Maximum Variation from True Position: 1.5 mm (1/16 inch).

1.06 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
A. Deliver materials to the site protected from the weather and in an undamaged condition.
Exercise care when off-loading lumber and such products subject to damage. In the event of damage make replacements at no increase in Contract Price.
B. Store lumber and wood products in such a manner as to ensure proper ventilation and drainage and to protect against damage and the weather.
C. Protect units from moisture damage.
1.07 FIELD CONDITIONS
A. During and after installation of custom cabinets, maintain temperature and humidity conditions in building spaces at same levels planned for occupancy.
B. For a minimum of 72 hours prior to installation, allow woodwork to come to equilibrium onsite in space where it is to be installed.

C. Humidity: For 24 hours before, during, and after installation, maintain relative humidity between 25 and 55 percent.

NEMA LD 3; acrylic resin, mineral filler, and pigments; homogenous, non-porous and capable of being worked and repaired using standard woodworking tools; no surface coating; color and pattern consistent throughout thickness.

2.03 FABRICATION
A. Fabricate in accordance with standards governing fabrication quality that are specified in Section 06410.
B. Fabricate tops and splashes in the largest sections practicable, with top surface of joints flush.
1. Join lengths of tops using best method recommended by manufacturer.
2. Fabricate to overhang fronts and ends of cabinets 25 mm (1 inch) except where top butts against cabinet or wall.
3. Prepare all cutouts accurately to size; replace tops having improperly dimensioned or unnecessary cutouts or fixture holes.
C. Provide back/end splash wherever counter edge abuts vertical surface unless otherwise indicated.
1. Secure to countertop with concealed fasteners and with contact surfaces set in waterproof glue.
2. Height: 150 mm (6 inches), unless otherwise indicated.
D. Solid Surfacing: Fabricate tops up to 3657 mm (144 inches) long in one piece; join pieces with adhesive sealant in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations and instructions.
E. Wall-Mounted Counters: Provide skirts and aprons as indicated on drawings, finished to match.
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.01 EXAMINATION
A. Do not begin installation until substrates have been properly prepared.
B. If substrate preparation is the responsibility of another installer, notify Contracting
Officer or Designated Representative of unsatisfactory preparation before proceeding.
C. Verify that wall surfaces have been finished and mechanical and electrical services and outlets are installed in proper locations.
3.02 PREPARATION
A. Clean surfaces thoroughly prior to installation.
B. Prepare surfaces using the methods recommended by the manufacturer for achieving the best result for the substrate under the project conditions.
3.03 INSTALLATION
A. Securely attach countertops to cabinets using concealed fasteners. Make flat surfaces level; shim where required.
B. Seal joint between back/end splashes and vertical surfaces.
3.04 CLEANING AND PROTECTION

1.03 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
A. LEED Requirements
1. Provide products, sealants, and adhesives that meet or exceed the VOC benchmarks set forth by the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD).
2. Give preference to products that maximize the percentage of recycled content (both post consumer and post industrial).
3. Give preference to products extracted/harvested/recovered and manufactured within
800 km (500 miles) of the project site.
1.04 SUBMITTALS
A. Product Data: Provide data on product characteristics, performance criteria, and

product limitations.
B. Manufacturer's Installation Instructions: Include information on special environmental conditions required for installation and installation techniques.
C. Manufacturer's Certificate: Certify that products meet or exceed specified requirements.
D. LEED Report
1. Submit product data showing the VOC content of each product, adhesive and/or sealant used.
2. Submit applicable LEED Submittal Forms for each different product showing total recycled content and broken down into Post Consumer and Post Industrial percentages.
3. Submit applicable LEED Submittal Form for each different product extracted/harvested/recovered and manufactured within 800 km (500 miles) of the project site.
1.05 FIELD CONDITIONS
A. Do not install insulation adhesives when temperature or weather conditions are detrimental to successful installation.
PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.01 APPLICATIONS
A. Insulation at Roofs: Polyisocyanurate board.
B. Insulation at Metal Framed Trusses: Batt insulation with no vapor retarder.
2.02 FOAM BOARD INSULATION MATERIALS
A. Polyisocyanurate Board Roof Insulation: ASTM C1289; with the following characteristics:
1. Insulation: Two inches of closed cell HCFC free polyisocyanurate.
2. Facing: Top layer of 7/16 inch APA rated OSB with 1 inch ventalation spacing on top side and a fiber reinforced felt facer on the bottom.
3. Flame Spread Index: 75 or less, when tested in accordance with ASTM E 84.
4. Smoke Developed Index: 450 or less, when tested in accordance with ASTM E
84.
5. Board Size: 1220 x 2440 mm (48 x 96 inch).
6. Board thickness: 3 and 7/16 inch total thickness.
7. Board edges: Square.
8. Thermal resistance: R-value of 12.1 minimum.
9. FM Standard 4450/4470 approval 1-90; for use with Class A shingles and metal roofing;
10. Compressive strength of 20 psi.

1289; Type II, Class 1, cellulose felt or glass fiber mat both faces; Grade 1.
1. Flame Spread Index: 75 or less, when tested in accordance with ASTM E 84.
2. Smoke Developed Index: 450 or less, when tested in accordance with ASTM E
84.
3. Compressive Strength: 110 kPa (16 psi)
4. Facing: Asphalt felt or mat both faces.
5. Board Size: 1220 x 2440 mm (48 x 96 inch).
6. Board Thickness: 50 mm (2 inch) per layer.
7. Board Edges: Square.
8. Thermal Conductivity (k factor): 0.27 (0.16).
9. Board Density: 29 kg/cu m (1.8 lb/cu ft).
10. Surface Burning Characteristics: Flame spread/Smoke developed of 25/25 in accordance with ASTM E 84.

2.03 BATT INSULATION MATERIALS
A. Where batt insulation is indicated, either glass fiber or mineral fiber batt insulation may be used, at Contractor's option.
B. Glass Fiber Batt Insulation: Flexible preformed batt or blanket, complying with ASTM
C 655; friction fit.
1. Flame Spread Index: 25 or less, when tested in accordance with ASTM E 84.
2. Smoke Developed Index: 450 or less, when tested in accordance with ASTM E
84.
3. Combustibility: Non-combustible, when tested in accordance with ASTM E 136, except for facing, if any.
4. Formaldehyde Content: Zero.
5. Thermal Resistance: As shown on drawings.
6. Facing: Unfaced.
7. Recycled content: 25% by weight, minimum.

2.04 ACCESSORIES
A. Sheet Vapor Retarder: Specified in Section 07260.
B. Insulation Fasteners: Impaling clip of galvanized steel with washer retainer and clips, to be adhered to surface to receive insulation, length to suit insulation thickness and substrate, capable of securely and rigidly fastening insulation in place.
C. Nails or Staples: Steel wire; electroplated, or galvanized; type and size to suit application.
D. Wire Mesh: Galvanized steel, hexagonal wire mesh.
E. Adhesive: Type recommended by insulation manufacturer for application.
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.01 EXAMINATION
A. Verify that substrate, adjacent materials, and insulation materials are dry and that substrates are ready to receive insulation and adhesive.
B. Verify substrate surfaces are flat, free of honeycomb, fins, irregularities, or materials or substances that may impede adhesive bond.
3.02 BOARD INSULATION OVER METAL DECK
A. Attachment of Insulation: Mechanically fasten each layer of insulation to deck in accordance with roofing manufacturer's instructions.
B. Lay subsequent layers of insulation with joints staggered minimum 150 mm (6 inch) from joints of preceding layer.
C. On metal deck, place boards parallel to flutes with insulation board edges bearing on deck flutes.
D. Lay boards with edges in moderate contact without forcing. Cut insulation to fit neatly to perimeter blocking and around penetrations through roof.
E. Tape joints of insulation in accordance with roofing and insulation manufacturers' instructions.
F. Do not apply more insulation than can be covered with roof surface in same day.
3.03 BATT INSTALLATION
A. Install insulation and vapor retarder in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.
B. Install in exterior wall and roof spaces without gaps or voids. Do not compress insulation.
