SECTION 08410

METAL-FRAMED STOREFRONTS

PART 1 GENERAL

1.01 SUMMARY

A. Section Includes:

1. Aluminum-framed storefront, with vision glass.

2. Aluminum doors and frames.

3. Factory sills.

4. Weatherstripping.

5. Door hardware.

6. Perimeter sealant.

J. UFC 4-010-01 - DoD Minimum Antiterrorisim Standards for Buildings.

1.03 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

A. Design and size components to withstand the following load requirements without damage or permanent set, when tested in accordance with ASTM E 330, using loads 1.5 times the design wind loads and 10 second duration of maximum load.

1. Positive Design Wind Load: 3351 Pa (70 lbf/sq ft).

2. Negative Design Wind Load: 3351 Pa (70 lbf/sq ft).

3. Member Deflection: Limit member deflection to 1/175 in any direction, with full recovery of glazing materials.

B. Movement: Accommodate movement between storefront and perimeter framing and deflection of lintel, without damage to components or deterioration of seals.

C. Thermal Resistance of Framing: U factor of 0.40 BTU/HR/sqft/degrees F or less when tested in accordance with NFRC 102..

D. Air Infiltration: Limit air infiltration through assembly to 0.3 L/s/sq m (0.06 cu ft/min/sq ft) of wall area, measured at a reference differential pressure across assembly of 300 Pa (6.24 psf) as measured in accordance with ASTM E 283.

E. Condensation Resistance Factor: CRF of 70 when measured in accordance with

AAMA 1503.1.

F. Water Leakage: None, when measured in accordance with ASTM E 331 with a test pressure difference of 290 Pa (6.00 lbf/sq ft).

G. System Internal Drainage: Drain to the exterior by means of a weep drainage network any water entering joints, condensation occurring in glazing channel, and migrating moisture occurring within system.

H. Expansion/Contraction: Provide for expansion and contraction within system components caused by cycling temperature range of 95 degrees C (170 degrees F) over a 12 hour period without causing detrimental effect to system components, anchorages, and other building elements.

I. LEED Requirements

1. Give preference to products that maximize the percentage of recycled content (both post consumer and post industrial).

2. Give preference to products extracted/harvested/recovered and manufactured within

800 km (500 miles) of the project site.

J. Anti-Terrorism / Force Protection Design.

1. Static design loads for exterior window, door, and frame members shall be 7 kilopascals (1 lb) per square in applied to the surface of the glazing and frame.

Deformation shall not exceed 1/60 of the unsupported member length.

2. Glazing shall have a minimum frame bite of 9.5 mm (0.375 in) for structurally glazed systems and 25 mm (1 in) for non-structurally glazed window systems.

3. Equivalent static design loads for connections of the window, or doorframe to the surrounding walls, hardware and associated connections, and glazing stop connections shall be 75 kilopascals (10.8 lbs per square inch) for glazing panels

REPLACE TROOP TRAINING QUARTERS 08410 - 3 Add #3 with a vision area less than or equal to 1.0 square meters (10.8 square feet) and 30 kilopascals (4.4 lbs per square inch) for glazing panels with a vision area greater than 1.0 square meters (10.8 square feet) but less than or equal to 3.0 square meters

(32 square feet). Loads shall be applied to the surface of the glazing and frame.

Connections and hardware may be designed based on ultimate strength for steel and

0.2% offset yield strength for aluminum.

1.04 SUBMITTALS

A. Product Data: Provide component dimensions, describe components within assembly, anchorage and fasteners, glass and infill, internal drainage details.

B. Shop Drawings: Indicate system dimensions, framed opening requirements and tolerances, affected related Work, expansion and contraction joint location and details, and field welding required.

C. Calculations: Provide sealed and signed calculations by a qualified registered

Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, verifying anchorage of exterior doors and frames meet DoD Anti-terrorism / Force Protection Guidelines.

D. Design Data: Provide framing member structural and physical characteristics, dimensional limitations.

E. Hardware Schedule: Complete itemization of each item of hardware to be provided for each door, cross-referenced to door identification numbers in Contract Documents.

F. Samples: Submit two samples 51 x 51 mm (2 x 2 inches) in size illustrating finished aluminum surface, glass, infill panels, glazing materials.

G. Manufacturer's Certificate: Certify that the products supplied meet or exceed the specified requirements.

H. Report of field testing for water leakage.

I. Warranty: Submit manufacturer warranty and ensure forms have been completed in

Contracting Officer or Designated Representative's name and registered with manufacturer.

J. LEED Reports

1. Submit applicable LEED Submittal Forms for each different product showing total recycled content and broken down into Post Consumer and Post Industrial percentages.

2. Submit applicable LEED Submittal Form for each different product extracted/harvested/recovered and manufactured within 800 km (500 miles) of the project site.

1.05 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Manufacturer and Installer Qualifications: Company specializing in manufacturing aluminum glazing systems with minimum three years of documented experience.

1.06 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A. Handle products of this section in accordance with AAMA CW-10.

B. Protect finished aluminum surfaces with wrapping. Do not use adhesive papers or sprayed coatings that bond to aluminum when exposed to sunlight or weather.

1.07 FIELD CONDITIONS

A. Field Measurements: Verify actual measurements/openings by field measurements before fabrication; show recorded measurements on shop drawings. Coordinate field measurements, fabrication schedule with construction progress to avoid construction delays.

B. Do not install sealants when ambient temperature is less than 5 degrees C (40 degrees

F). Maintain this minimum temperature during and 48 hours after installation.

1.08 WARRANTY

A. Correct defective Work within a five year period after Date of Substantial Completion.

B. Provide five year manufacturer warranty against failure of glass seal on insulating glass units, including interpane dusting or misting. Include provision for replacement of failed units.

C. Provide five year manufacturer warranty against excessive degradation of exterior finish. Include provision for replacement of units with excessive fading, chalking, or flaking.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.01 MANUFACTURERS

A. YKK AP America, Inc.

1. Entrance Framing, YHS 50 TU ( Insulated Impact Glazing, thermal break).

2. Entrance Doors, 35H Medium Stile Impact Resistant Heavy Duty Swing Doors.

B. Other Acceptable Manufacturers:

1. United States Aluminum Corp: www.usalum.com.

2. Vistawall Architectural Products: www.vistawall.com.

3. The Amarlite Architectural Products.

4. Or Approved Equal.

2.02 COMPONENTS

A. Aluminum-Framed Storefront: Factory fabricated, factory finished aluminum framing members with infill, and related flashings, anchorage and attachment devices.

1. Unitized, shop assembly.

2. Finish: High performance organic coating.

3. Color: As selected from manufacturer's standards.

B. Aluminum Framing Members: Tubular aluminum sections, thermally broken with interior section insulated from exterior and internal weep drainage system.

1. Framing members for interior applications need not be thermally broken.

2. Glazing stops: Manufacturer's standard glazing stops with EPDM glazing gaskets..

3. Cross-Section: 62 x 127 mm (2.5 x 5 inch) nominal dimension.

C. Doors: Glazed aluminum.

1. Thickness: 67 mm (2-3/8 inches).

2. Top Rail: 100 mm (4 inches) wide.

3. Vertical Stiles: 115 mm (4-1/2 inches) wide.

4. Bottom Rail: 152 mm (6 inches) wide.

5. Glazing Stops: Square.

6. Finish: Same as storefront.

D. Factory Sills: 0.125 inch thick, finished to match selected metal-framed storefont finish; positive drainage; designed to fit under sill framing, 1/2-inch extension beyond wall face; full width of opening with angles at jamb teminations.

2.03 MATERIALS

A. Extruded Aluminum: ASTM B 221 (ASTM B 221M).

B. Fasteners: Stainless steel.

C. Exposed Flashings: 0.8 mm (0.032 inch) thick aluminum sheet; finish to match framing members.

D. Concealed Flashings: 0.5 mm (0.018 inch) thick stainless steel.

E. Perimeter Sealant: As specified in Section 07900.

F. Glass: As specified in Section 08800.

1. Glass in Exterior Framing: Type Insulated Safety.

2. Glass in Interior Framing: Type Insulated Safety.

3. Glass in Doors: Type Laminated.

G. Glazing Gaskets: Type to suit application to achieve weather, moisture, and air infiltration requirements.

H. Glazing Accessories: As specified in Section 08800.

I. Shop and Touch-Up Primer for Steel Components: SSPC-Paint 25, zinc oxide, alkyd, linseed oil primer.

2.04 FINISHES

A. High Performance Organic Finish: AAMA 2604; multiple coats, thermally cured fluoropolymer system; color as selected from manufacturer's standard colors.

B. Touch-Up Materials: As recommended by coating manufacturer for field application.

2.05 HARDWARE

A. Weatherstripping: Dense, semi-rigid polymeric material, continuous and replaceable;

provide on all doors.

B. Sill Sweep Strips: Resilient seal type, of EPDM blade gasket; provide on all exterior doors.

C. Threshold: Extruded aluminum, one piece per door opening, ribbed surface; provide on all doors.

D. Cylinder: As specified in Section 08710.

E. Pivots: Offset type; top and bottom.

F. Exit Devices: H-5201 Concealed Panic Device with H-1541 Panic Pull.

G. Closers: Concealed overhead.

H. Automatic Door Operators and Actuators: As specified in Section 08710.

2.06 FABRICATION

A. Fabricate components with minimum clearances and shim spacing around perimeter of assembly, yet enabling installation and dynamic movement of perimeter seal.

B. Accurately fit and secure joints and corners. Make joints flush, hairline, and weatherproof.

C. Prepare components to receive anchor devices. Fabricate anchors.

D. Coat concealed metal surfaces that will be in contact with cementitious materials or dissimilar metals with bituminous paint.

E. Arrange fasteners and attachments to conceal from view.

F. Reinforce components internally for door hardware and door operators.

G. Reinforce framing members for imposed loads.

H. Finishing: Apply factory finish to all surfaces that will be exposed in completed assemblies.

1. Touch-up surfaces cut during fabrication so that no natural aluminum is visible in completed assemblies, including joint edges.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.01 EXAMINATION

A. Verify dimensions, tolerances, and method of attachment with other work.

B. Verify that wall openings and adjoining air and vapor seal materials are ready to receive work of this section.

3.02 INSTALLATION

A. Install wall system in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.

B. Attach to structure to permit sufficient adjustment to accommodate construction tolerances and other irregularities.

C. Provide alignment attachments and shims to permanently fasten system to building structure.

D. Align assembly plumb and level, free of warp or twist. Maintain assembly dimensional tolerances, aligning with adjacent work.

E. Provide thermal isolation where components penetrate or disrupt building insulation.

F. Install sill flashings. Turn up ends and edges; seal to adjacent work to form water tight

G. Coordinate attachment and seal of perimeter air and vapor barrier materials.

H. Pack fibrous insulation in shim spaces at perimeter of assembly to maintain continuity of thermal barrier.

I. Set thresholds in bed of mastic and secure.

J. Install hardware using templates provided.

1. See Section 08710 for operator and actuator installation requirements.

K. Install glass in accordance with Section 08800, using glazing method required to achieve performance criteria.

L. Install perimeter sealant in accordance with Section 07900.

M. Touch-up minor damage to factory applied finish; replace components that cannot be satisfactorily repaired.

3.03 TOLERANCES

A. Maximum Variation from Plumb: 1.5 mm/m (0.06 inches every 3 ft) non-cumulative or 1.5 mm/3 m (1/16 inches per 10 ft), whichever is less.

B. Maximum Misalignment of Two Adjoining Members Abutting in Plane: 0.8 mm (1/32 inch).

3.04 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A. See Section 01400 - Quality Requirements, for independent testing and inspection requirements. Inspection will monitor quality of installation and glazing.

B. Test installed storefront for water leakage in accordance with AAMA 501.2.

3.05 ADJUSTING

A. Adjust operating hardware for smooth operation.

3.06 CLEANING

A. Remove protective material from pre-finished aluminum surfaces.

B. Wash down surfaces with a solution of mild detergent in warm water, applied with soft, clean wiping cloths. Take care to remove dirt from corners. Wipe surfaces clean.

C. Remove excess sealant by method acceptable to sealant manufacturer.

3.07 PROTECTION

A. Protect installed products from damage during subsequent construction.

B. Touch-up minor damage to factory applied finish; replace components that cannot be satisfactorily repaired.

C. Protect finished work from damage.
