SECTION 142400 - HYDRAULIC ELEVATOR
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.01 SUMMARY:
A. This Section includes oil hydraulic passenger elevator.
B. Hydraulic elevator is hereby defined to include systems in which cars are hoisted either directly or indirectly by action of a hydraulic plunger and cylinder (jack); with other components including fluid storage tank, pump, piping, valves, car enclosures, hoistway entrances, control systems, signal equipment, guide rails, electrical wiring, roping, buffers, and devices for operating, dispatching, safety, security, leveling, alarm, maintenance, and similar required performances and capabilities.
C. Elevator Schedule indicates required performances, controls, capacities, features, and finishes for each elevator or group of elevators. Schedule is included at end of this Section.
D. Related Work Specified Elsewhere: See applicable Drawings and Specification Sections.
1. Elevator hoistway and machine room.
2. Supports and foundations including supports for guide rail brackets.
3. Connections from the power mains to each controller signal equipment feeders as required, including necessary circuit breakers and fused mainline disconnect switches.
4. Outlets at the center of the hoistway for lighting in the car. Electric power for construction, testing, and adjusting and of the same characteristics as the permanent supply.
5. Setting of anchors and sleeves. Pockets or blockouts for signal fixtures.
6. All sill supports, including steel angles where required, sill recesses and the grouting of door sills and hoistway frames after installation.
7. Painting, except as specified herein.
8. Ventilation of hoist way and machine room.

1.03 SUBMITTALS:
A. Submit as specified in DIVISION 1.
B. Includes, but not limited to, the following:
1. Product Data:
a. Specifications and installation instructions for complete elevator system.
b. Certified laboratory test reports on components as specified or required by code.
c. Complete listing and description of performance and operating characteristics, power demands, and requirements for temporary power.
2. Shop Drawings: Plans, elevations, and details of car enclosures and hoistway entrances.
Prepare elevatoring diagrams to show service to each level. Show excavation requirements for jack and include excavation requirements for jack.
3. Wiring diagrams for entire system of power distribution, lighting, control, signals, communication, and similar items. Differentiate clearly between manufacturer-installed wiring and field installed wiring. Indicate maximum and average power demands.
4. Samples: Of exposed finishes of car enclosures, hoistway entrances, and signal equipment. Provide 6-inch to 8-inch square Samples of sheet materials and 10-inch to 12-inch length of running trim members.
5. Maintenance Manuals: Submit bound manual with operating and maintenance instructions, parts listing, recommended parts inventory listing, purchase sources, emergency instructions, and similar information.
6. Certificates and Permits: Provide Owner with copies of all inspection/acceptance certificates and operating permits as required by governing authorities to allow normal unrestricted use of elevators.
1.04 QUALITY ASSURANCE:
A. Manufacturer or Installer Qualifications: Either the elevator manufacturer or an installer approved by the elevator manufacturer shall have not less than 5 years' successful experience with the installation of similar elevators.
1. Show ability to provide complete maintenance service of elevators with trained personnel.
2. Maintain adequate stock of parts locally for replacement or emergency purposes with qualified personnel available to perform maintenance services.
B. Tests:
1. Perform all tests required by codes and these Specifications.
2. Notify Owner and Engineer when tests are to be made so that representatives may witness the tests if desired.
3. Submit test results as specified under PART 1 - SUBMITTALS, this Section.
C. Regulatory Requirements:
1. Elevator Code: Except for more stringent requirements as indicated or imposed by governing regulations (which must be complied with), comply with applicable requirements of ANSI/ASME A17.1.
2. NFPA Code: Comply with applicable NFPA codes and specifically with sections relating to electrical items of elevator.
3. Fire Resistance of Entrances: Comply with NFPA No. 80, and provide units bearing UL labels with 30-minute temperature rise on labels.
4. NEII Standards for Handicapped: Comply with NEII "Suggested Minimum Passenger Elevator Requirements for the Handicapped," including clearances, handrails, locations for signal equipment, and similar provisions.

5. Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA): Comply with ADA for requirements concerning elevators, including clearances, location for signal equipment, control locations, telephone, and similar provisions.
1.05 INITIAL MAINTENANCE AND SERVICE:
A. Maintenance Service: Provide full maintenance service by skilled, competent employees of the elevator installer for period of 12 months following date of Substantial Completion.
Include monthly preventive maintenance performed during normal working hours. Include repair/replacement of worn or defective parts or components and lubrication, cleaning, and adjusting as required for proper elevator operation in conformance with specified requirements.
Include 24 hours-per-day, seven days-per-week emergency callback service. Exclude only repair or replacement due to misuse, abuse, accidents, or neglect caused by persons other than installer's personnel.
B. Continuing Maintenance: Installer shall provide a continuing maintenance proposal to Owner, in the form of a standard yearly maintenance agreement, starting on date construction Contract maintenance requirements are concluded. State services, obligations, conditions, and terms for agreement period, and for renewal options.
1.06 WARRANTY:
A. Provide special Project warranty, signed by Contractor, installer, and manufacturer, agreeing to replace, repair or restore defective materials and workmanship of elevator Work during warranty period. "Defective" is hereby defined to include, but not by way of limitation, operation or control system failures, performances below required minimums, excessive wear, unusual deterioration or aging of materials or finishes, unsafe conditions, the need for excessive maintenance, abnormal noise or vibration, and similar, unusual, unexpected, and unsatisfactory conditions.
1. The warranty period is 12 months starting on date of Substantial Completion of elevator
Work.
B. Warranties: Provide coincidental product warranties where available for major components of elevator. Submit with maintenance manuals.
1.07 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING:
A. Deliver materials to the Project site in original packaging.
B. Handle all materials to prevent damage to components.
C. Store all components in a dry and protected area conveniently located to elevator hoistway.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.01 ACCEPTABLE MANUFACTURERS:
A. Subject to compliance with requirements, provide products of one of the following:
1. Dover Elevator Corporation.
2. Montgomery Elevator Co.
3. Otis Elevator Co.
4. Schindler Elevator Corp.
5. U.S. Elevator/Cubic Corp.
2.02 MATERIALS AND COMPONENTS:
A. Provide manufacturer's standard pre-engineered elevator and components which will comply with or fulfill the requirements of the Elevator Schedule at the end of this Section. Where

components are not otherwise indicated, provide standard components published by manufacturer as included in pre-engineered elevator system and as required for a complete system. Where a device or part of the elevator system herein is referred to in the singular, such reference shall apply to as many devices as are required to complete the installation.
B. Hydraulic Machines and Elevator Equipment:
1. General: Single-acting under-the-car hydraulic plunger-cylinder unit for each elevator, with electric pump-tank-control system in machine room.
2. Piping: Size, type, and weight piping recommended by manufacturer, with isolation couplings to prevent sound/vibration transmissions from power unit.
3. Inserts: Required concrete inserts and similar anchorage devices for the installation of guide rails, machinery, and other components of elevator.
4. Car Frame and Platform: Welded steel units. (Use special heavy-duty units where required for power truck loading, designed to withstand impacts and wheel loadings indicated.)
2.03 CONTROL SYSTEMS:
A. As required to provide automatic operation and defined in ANSI A17.1 as "Operations."
1. Passenger Elevator Control: Solid-state selective collective operation.
B. Auxiliary Operations/Controls:
1. In addition to primary control system features, provide the following controls or operational features for passenger elevators:
a. Top-of-car inspection operation.
b. Battery powered emergency power operation shall allow elevator to travel to the ground floor during a power outage.
c. Automatic 2-way leveling.
2.04 SIGNAL EQUIPMENT:
A. General:
1. Car control station and car position indicator in each car, hall push-button station on each landing for each elevator. Provide illuminated buttons and signals, which light up when activated and remain lit until call or other function has been fulfilled; fabricate of acrylic or other permanent translucent plastic. Except for buttons and illuminated signal elements, fabricate signal Equipment with exposed surfaces of stainless steel with directional polish or satin finish.
2. Car Control Stations: Flush-mounted metal faceplates, containing call button for each landing served, emergency controls (stop and alarm), and containing other buttons, switches, and controls required for specified car operation and control. Mount as shown and at height complying with NEII "Suggested Minimum Requirements for the Handicapped" and ADA requirements. If not otherwise indicated, mount in return panel adjacent to car door. Provide operating device symbols as required by code. Mark other buttons and switches with identification for required use or function. Control buttons are to be 3/4-inch diameter raised 1/8-inch above the surrounding surface and illuminated.
All control buttons shall be designated by Grade 2 Braille, and by raised standard alphabet characters for letters, arabic characters for numerals, or standard symbols as per ADA requirements.
3. Car Position Indicator: For passenger elevator cars, provide either illuminated-signal type or digital-display type, located near top of car. Include direction of next travel signal if not provided in car control station. In addition to visual indicator, provide

audible signal to indicate to passengers that car is either stopping at or passing each of the floors served.
4. Hall Push-Button Station: Unit with flat faceplate for surface mounting on wall finish (body of unit recessed). Provide 1-button station where only one direction of travel is available, and indicate which direction that is.
5. Hall Lanterns: Units with illuminated "up" and "down" signal arrows, but provide single arrow where only one direction is possible. Signal arrows shall be 2-1/2" x 2-1/2".
Provide units projecting from face plate for ease of angular viewing, (except provide flush units where a location in hoistway entrance frame is indicated). Match materials, finishes, and mounting method with hall push-button stations.
a. At manufacturer's option, for single elevators, hall lantern signals may be placed with hall push-button station, except at ground floor.
b. In conjunction with each hall lantern device, provide an audible signal to indicate that a car is arriving in response to a hall call and to indicate direction of car travel.
Signal shall sound once for up direction of travel and twice for down direction. At manufacturer's option, audible signal may be placed on each car.
6. Hall Position Indicator: Illuminated-signal type or digital-display type, located above each hoistway entrance at ground floor. Match materials, finishes, and mounting method with hall push-button stations. At manufacturer's option, hall lantern signals may be integrated with hall position indicators.
7. Telephone: Provide rough-in for telephone handset in each car, contained in flush-mounted cabinet and complete with identification and instructions for use.
8. Alarm System: Provide emergency alarm bell properly located within building and audible outside hoistway, equipped to sound automatically in response to emergency stops and in response to "Alarm" button at each car control station.
a. Provide additional weatherproof emergency signaling device of minimum 80 decibel rating, complying with Code, and mounted on building exterior in location as indicated.
9. Signs: "NO SMOKING" sign in (each) car.
2.05 PASSENGER ELEVATOR CAR ENCLOSURES:
A. General: Pre-engineered car enclosures, of the selection and size specified. Include ventilation, lighting, ceiling finish, wall finish, access doors, doors, power door operators, sill, trim, accessories, and floor finish. Provide horizontal sliding doors of flush panel type, with operation and number of panels as indicated or specified. Provide protective edge trim system for door and wall panels.
B. Materials and Fabrication:
1. Provide manufacturer's standards, but not less than the following:
a. Stainless Steel: AISI Type 302/304; with directional polish or satin finish.
b. Aluminum Sills: Cast or extruded aluminum, with grooved surface 1/4-inch thickness; mill finish.
c. Plastic Laminate: High-pressure type complying with NEMA LD3, 0.05-inch thickness; color, texture, and pattern as selected by Engineer/Architect from standard products available in the industry.
d. Fabricate car with recesses and cutouts for signal equipment.
e. Luminous Ceiling: Fluorescent light fixtures each with an integral 90-minute battery, battery charger and inverter and ceiling panels of translucent, open egg-crate plastic, acrylic, or other permanent rigid plastic complying with flammability requirements.

f. Vinyl Composition Tile Floor Covering: 12 inches x 12 inches x 1/8 inch, color/pattern selected by Engineer/Architect from available choices in industry.
2. Handrails: Stainless steel on side walls and back wall unless otherwise indicated; either continuous or panelized.
3. Door-Edge Protective Device: Retractable edge shoe or proximity detector on leading edges of elevator entrance doors which, upon contacting an obstruction in entrance, causes doors to stop and reopen.
4. Photo-Eye Detection Device: Provide electronic photo-eye device with timed cut-out, projecting dual light beams across car entrance at 5- and 29-inch heights, which, when interrupted will cause closing doors to stop and reopen or proximity detector. Provide keyed switch in car operating panel for disconnecting photo-eye device.
a. Nudging Feature: After car doors are prevented from closing for a predetermined adjustable time period, through activation of detection device or door-edge protective device, a loud buzzer shall sound and doors shall begin to close at reduced rate of speed. Doors shall continue to close unless door-edge protective device is activated, which shall cause doors to reopen. Process shall repeat continuously until obstruction is removed from entrance.
5. Certificate Display Case: Tamperproof frame with lucite windows, sized to conform to legal document.
6. Mechanical Ventilation: Supply fan with outlet diffuser.
2.06 PASSENGER HOISTWAY ENTRANCES:
A. General: Pre-engineered, hollow metal type, sliding, door-and-frame hoistway entrances complete with track systems, hardware, safeties, sills, and accessories. Match car enclosure doors for size, number of door panels, and door panel movement. Provide frame-section size and profile to coordinate with hoistway wall construction as indicated.
1. Where gypsum-board wall construction is indicated, fabricate frames with reinforced heat sections; provide sufficient strength without support from wall lintels.
B. Materials and Fabrication:
1. Provide selections indicated, manufacturer's standards, but not less than the following:
a. Stainless Steel Frames: Formed stainless steel sheet, AISI Type 302/304 with No. 4 or satin finish.
b. Door jambs at all landings shall be identified by both raised Arabic numerals (min.
2" height) and Braille symbols immediately to the left of numerals. Signage to be of melamine plastic laminate, 1/8" thick with face and core plies of contrasting colors as selected by Engineer/Architect. Mount 60" above floor on both sides of door. Install signs by (screw) (vinyl tape) (adhesive) mounting.
c. Stainless Steel Door Panels: Flush stainless steel construction, AISI Type 302/304 with direction polish or satin finish.
d. Aluminum Sills: Cast or extruded aluminum, with grooved surface, 1/4-inch thickness, mill finish.
2.07 HOISTWAY AND CAR EQUIPMENT
A. Conform to ASME/ANSI A17.1, Part III.
B. Guide Rails and Fastenings: Conform to ASME/ANSI A17.1, paint rail shanks with one coat of black enamel.
C. Car Buffers or Bumpers: Conform to ASME/ANSI A17.1. Provide buffer data plate on each buffer.

D. Pit Equipment:
1. Ladders: Provide galvanized steel ladder in each pit. Provide minimum 4-inch distance between rung and wall.
2. Pit "STOP" Switch: Provide a pit "STOP" switch for stopping elevator motor, independent of regular operating device. Locate on same side of door as ladder.
3. Lighting of Pits: Conform to ASME/ANSI A17.1. Locate pit light 6 feet above pit floor.
Locate switch on same side of door as ladder.
E. Terminal Stopping Devices: Conform to ASME/ANSI A17.1.
F. Wiring and Traveling Power, Lighting, Control and Telephone Cables: Conform to NFPA 70, Article 620. Suspend traveling cables by means of self-tightening webbed devices.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.01 INSPECTION:
A. Examine the hoistway, hoistway opening, pit and machine room, supporting structure, and the conditions under which the elevator is to be installed for dimensional discrepancies and other conditions detrimental to proper performance of the elevator. Do not proceed with elevator installation until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.
3.02 INSTALLATION OF ELEVATOR SYSTEM:
A. Comply with codes and manufacturer's instructions. Provide all wire, conduit, back-boxes, and traveling cables required for a complete and fully operational elevator. Comply with NEC for electrical installation.
B. Excavation for Jack: Drill excavation in elevator pit to accommodate installation of plunger-cylinder unit; comply with applicable requirements of DIVISION 31 -
EARTHWORK.
1. Install casings with waterproof seals at pit floor, and with waterproof high-pressure seal at bottom of casings.
C. Install plunger-cylinder units plumb and accurately centered for elevator car position and travel; anchor securely in place.
D. Provide welded connections for installation of elevator wherever bolted connections are not required for subsequent removal or for normal operation, adjustment, inspection, maintenance, and replacement of worn parts. Comply with AWS standards for workmanship and for qualification of welding operators.
E. Coordination: Coordinate elevator installation with Work of other trades, for proper time and sequence to avoid construction delays. Use benchmarks, lines, and levels designated by Contractor to ensure dimensional coordination of the Work.
F. Sound Isolation: Mount rotating and vibrating elevator equipment and components on vibration-absorption mounts, designed to effectively prevent transmission of vibrations to structure, and thereby eliminate sources of structure-borne noise from elevator system.
G. Install piping without routing underground where possible; where not possible, cover underground piping with permanent protective wrapping before backfilling.
H. Lubricate operating parts of systems, including ropes, if any, as recommended by manufacturers.
I. Alignment: Coordinate installation of hoistway entrances with installation of elevator guide rails for accurate alignment of entrances with cars. Where possible, delay final adjustment of sills and doors until car is operable in shaft. Reduce clearances to minimum, safe, workable dimensions at each landing.
J. Leveling Tolerance: 1/2 inch, up or down, regardless of load and direction of travel.

K. Grout sills with nonstaining, nonshrink grout. Set units accurately aligned with finished floor or floor covering at landings.
3.03 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL:
A. Acceptance Testing: Upon nominal completion of each elevator installation, and before permitting use of the elevator (either temporary or permanent), perform acceptance tests as required and recommended by ANSI A17.1 and A17.2, and also perform other tests as required by governing regulations or agencies.
B. Obtain and pay for necessary municipal or state inspections and permits to make all tests required by regulations. Tests shall be made in the presence of authorized representatives of such state and local authorities.
C. Advise Contractor, Owner, Engineer, and inspection department of governing agencies in advance of dates and times tests are to be performed on elevators.
3.04 PROTECTION AND TEMPORARY USE:
A. Protect elevator with recommended protection facilities and procedures to prevent damage and deterioration of completed elevator Work if being used for temporary service during the remainder of the construction period. Provide complete inspection and maintenance service for elevators in temporary service, if any, for the period of such service prior to final acceptance.
B. Refer to related documents of DIVISION 1 for limitations and terms for use of permanent elevator systems during the construction period (prior to Owner's acceptance and occupancy).
3.05 INSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE:
A. Instruct the Owner's personnel in the proper use, operation, and daily maintenance of the elevators. Review emergency provisions, including emergency access and procedures to be followed at time of failure in operation and other building emergencies. Train Owner's personnel in the normal procedures to be followed in checking for the source of an operational failure or malfunction. Confer with the Owner on the requirements for an elevator maintenance program.
B. Make a final check of elevator operation just prior to date of Substantial Completion.
Determine that all control systems operating devices are functioning properly.

ELEVATOR SCHEDULE - HYDRAULIC PASSENGER ELEVATORS
Elevator Nos. One Capacity: 2500 pounds.
Speed: 100/125 fpm.
Travel Distance: 16'-0" Landings Served: One Power Supplied: 460 volts ac, 3 phase, 60 hertz.
Machinery: Single-stage plunger-cylinder unit with steel well casing, positive displacement pump, ac motor.
Control System: Solid State Selective Collective Operation Auxiliary Operations: Emergency power operation.
Signal Equipment: As specified.
Car Enclosure: 6'-8" wide x 4'-3" deep x 7'-0" high inside dimensions.
Front wall and door/frame materials:
Ceiling: Luminous plastic egg crate panels with fluorescent light fixtures above.
Side and rear walls: Plastic laminate.
Hoistway Entrances: 3'-6" x 7'-0" single slide door opening. Stainless steel entrance doors and frames, rated and labeled for 30-minute temperature rise of 650°F (361°C).
Additional Requirements: Protective blanket hooks in each car, two complete sets of full-height blankets, dark tan color.
