Survey for Duck Field Rubbish Deposit, Schofield Barracks

ACTO 4 Progress Report 2-27-09

We have surveyed the limits of the historic rubbish feature at the edge of Duck Field.

While a surface scatter of modern (bottle glass, plastic bags, razor wire, Styrofoam, sand bags, and comm. wire) and historic (glass bottle and window fragments, ceramic sherds, and metal fragments) rubbish, as well as construction debris, was observed along a portion of the slope on the western edge of Duck Field, shovel tests indicated that a buried layer of historic rubbish was confined to a small portion of the slope.

To identify the limits of the rubbish feature, the monitors:

1) Walked transects north along the mowed edge of Duck Field, and then back along the densely overgrown slope on the edge of Duck Field, looking for surface debris and for indications of buried materials eroding out of the slope.

2) Dug a series of shovel pits (following the methodology used by Bouthillier et al.

1997 that originally tested this area) to identify buried rubbish deposits, starting on Duck Field and testing down the slope to identify the up-slope and down-slope edges of the buried rubbish, then following the slope to either side to the edge of the surface scatter, testing at these scatter-edges for buried rubbish, then working back along the slope toward the center to identify the actual edge of the buried rubbish feature (Figure 1).

The surface scatter was distributed further along the slope and also higher and lower on the slope than the buried rubbish layer (while some buried material was identified eroding out of the slope, it was clear that the surface scatter was not simply the product of slope erosion exposing buried deposits).

The buried rubbish layer extended approximately 20 meters along the slope, and 9-12 meters down the slope, in each shovel pit tested the rubbish was mixed with Stratum I (the dark reddish clay loam found on Duck Field), the scattered nature of the rubbish in the test pits and the stratigraphy of the test pits suggest the “buried” rubbish was pushed onto the slope along with the clay loam from Duck Field.
