• Never attempt to modify your OMEGA 60/B2 BES or permit it to be modified.

• Before handling this OMEGA 60/B2 BES and the related pyrotechnic cartridges; READ and UNDERSTAND this

Operation and Maintenance Manual. Familiarize yourself with the mechanical features of the unit. If you feel uncertain about any operational aspects of the unit or the related pyrotechnic cartridges, discontinue use and contact Range Safety Officer.

• Always secure and store your OMEGA 60/B2 BES and the related pyrotechnic cartridges safely.

• Always treat the OMEGA 60/B2 BES unit as if it were armed and could activate at any time.

• Always keep the OMEGA 60/B2 BES unit pointed in a safe direction, primarily in an upward position. A stationary, mounted BES should not exceed a 15-degree angle from level. Do not allow tree limbs, wires, or any other obstacles to hang in front of, above, or close to the firing unit.

• Never carry or store this OMEGA 60/B2 BES without the ARMED/SAFE switch placed in the SAFE position.

• Never allow the OMEGA 60/B2 BES or the related pyrotechnic cartridges to be used by individuals who have not read these safety rules and have not been trained according to the OMEGA 60/B2 BES operating and training course.

LAUNCHER. The Surface Danger Zone (SDZ) IS 10.3 METERS (34 Feet).

WARNING

READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS AND WARNINGS CAREFULLY

General Warnings

• The surface danger zone (SDZ) of the omega 60/B2 BES is 10.3 meters (34 Feet).

• Be sure you understand these instructions and warnings before using the omega 60/B2 BES. Only qualified, trained operators should operate and maintain it.

• Failure to read these instructions and to follow these warnings may result in property damage, serious injury or death.

• Do not use an omega 60/B2 BES in confined spaces, but only in open, outside areas designated for pyrotechnics.

• Do not fire the omega 60/B2 BES where combustible materials are within 34 feet of the launcher.

iv

READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS AND WARNINGS CAREFULLY

Approaching The Launcher

• Ensure that all power has been shut off from the remote power source/targetry by placing the power switch in the “SAFE” position before approaching the Omega 60/B2 BES.

Failure to do so could result in serious injury or death due to inadvertent firing.

• Before performing any procedures on the Omega 60/B2 BES, first place the remote ARMED/SAFE switch on the cable assembly on “SAFE” and then turn the launcher front control panel to the “SAFE” position. The launcher should always be powered off at a distance before approaching the launcher. Failure to do so may result in property damage, personal injury, or death due to inadvertent firing.

Loading And Unloading The Launcher

• Personnel not directly involved in loading the Omega 60/B2 BES should remain at least 34 feet (10.3 meters) from the unit during the loading operation. Personnel loading the device should be trained and certified through the omega 60/B2 BES training course to handle pyrotechnic cartridges, and must adhere to local range standard operating procedures and safety regulations.

• Hearing protection, an OSHA-approved face shield, and Nomex gloves are recommended within 34 feet of the launcher, standard range procedures for approaching and loading the launcher should also be followed.

• Never stand or bend over the cartridge chambers when loading or unloading pyrotechnic cartridges from the Omega 60/B2 BES system. Load and unload using the proper sequence (see Section 4.1). Failure to do so may cause property damage, personal injury, or death due to inadvertent firing.

• Immediately before loading or unloading pyrotechnic cartridges, personnel should discharge any static electricity on their persons by touching either lifting handle of the omega 60/B2 BES system.

• The M34 Hostile Fire (DODIC LA54) and M35 Target Hit, White Star (DODIC LA53) cartridges are pyrotechnics that can cause death or severe bodily injury if allowed to ignite near personnel. Exercise caution when handling these cartridges. Always ensure the armed/safe switches are in the safe position and the armed led indicator is not illuminated before loading, unloading, or working near the BES system.

NOTE: [Department of Defense Identification Code (DODIC)]

• After firing, approach the Omega 60/B2 BES and look for cartridges which have not ignited in sequence. Any cartridge which has not ignited in sequence, treat as a misfire or faulty cartridge. Remove these cartridges and follow established EOD (explosive ordnance disposal) procedures (see Section 4.2.2.).

• When in doubt whether a cartridge has been fired, handle as if the cartridge is live.

• If the Omega 60/B2 BES contains a suspected misfire cartridge, place the armed/safe switch on “SAFE” and then move the launcher control panel’s armed/safe switch to the “SAFE” position. Disconnect the power source cable. Immediately step a minimum of 34 feet away from the BES and wait 15 minutes before removing a misfire or a suspected faulty cartridge.

NOTE: the 15-minute safety interval is an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) recommendation, but range procedures have priority and should always be followed.

v vi

Launcher Arming Or Armed

• The mandatory and safest operating distance is at least 34 feet from the BES launcher.

The SDZ is 10.3 meters

• Do not work near the BES when the system is armed and the armed led on the control panel of the BES is illuminated.

• No personnel are allowed within the (34-foot) SDZ during firing.

• To prevent shock or burns resulting from contact with high voltage, do not touch the internal electrode tower when the Omega 60/B2 BES launcher is armed, during maintenance procedures, or when arming the launcher for operation

WARNING: Do not use a petroleum-base cleaner on the launcher. Any oil or petroleum-base solvent may create cracks in the Lexan coil plate housing the Electro Towers.

NOTE: The term misfire defined in this technical publication relates to when a cartridge fails to fire after receiving a FIRE COMMAND from the Range Operation Controller to the Omega 60/B2 BES launcher. It does not relate to the defined Firing Characteristics of a cartridge.

IMPORTANT OPERATING TIPS

• The BES should have a cartridge in each chamber position prior to firing; however, the BES may be operated without a full load of cartridges.

• If enough live cartridges are not available for a full load, then previously-fired cartridges may be used to simulate a full load. This technique prevents combustion residue or fired-cartridge debris from settling into an uncovered chamber and fouling the electro towers.

• Preventive maintenance and safety tip: another benefit for keeping previously fired and/or new cartridges in all 60 chambers is to control the path of the arc between bottom pin A and the side pin B.

It is not recommended to fire a chamber without a used or unused cartridge as it could potentially damage the launcher by not having a controlled path to ground. In the case of maintenance tasks test lights can be used to accomplish the control path of the arc.

• Only two cartridges – M34 Hostile Fire (National Stock Number (NSN): 1370-01-534-9191, DODIC:

LA54) and M35 Target Hit, White Star (NSN: 1370-01-534-7733, DODIC: LA53) - are approved for use in the Omega 60/B2 BES launcher.

2.1.1 - OMEGA 60/B2 BES Components and Features

The OMEGA 60/B2 BES Launcher is composed of two major subassemblies, the Chamber Assembly (O60.003914) and the Base Assembly (O60.003104.01). The key launcher components and features, including switches, controls and connectors, are as follows:

2.1.1.1 - Cartridge Plate

The Cartridge Plate secures the Cartridges after loading.

2.1.1.2 - Latch

The latches secure the Cartridge Plate onto the Launcher.

2.1.1.3 - Handles

The handles allow for a two-person lift and transport of the launcher. Operators and maintainers may use the handles to discharge static electricity by touching them before loading and unloading cartridges.

2.1.1.4 - C2 Connector

Power is provided to the unit via the C2 Connector.

2.1.1.5 - Mode Selector Switch

The Mode Selector Switch enables the selection of programmed firing Modes, which are in the OMEGA 60/B2 BES memory. The mode selection switch for FASIT is mode 0. See Section 2.2.2 in this manual.

2.1.1.6 - ARMED/SAFE Switch

The ARMED position powers on the launcher and the SAFE position powers down the launcher.

2.1.1.7 - ARMED/LED Indicator

The ARMED/LED provides the operator or maintainer a visual cue as to whether the system is ARMED (RED) or SAFE (GREEN). Also, this shows if the unit is undergoing the Built-In-Test (BIT) sequence, if the power is on, if the unit is in process of arming, and if the unit has failed the BIT.

2.1.1.8 - S1 Connector

The S1 Connector is used on Enhanced Remote Targetry System (ERETS) ranges only. See separate ERETS Technical Manual for description of use.

2.1.1.9 - S2 Connector

A cable connected to the S2 Connector provides the digital interface for system commands and status responses to communicate to and from the FASIT launcher.

2.1.1.10 - C3 Connector

The C3 Connector is not currently used - for future expansion only. Even though the C3 connector is not used externally it is used internally in wiring as a grounding source for the Ethernet card.

2.1.2 - Safety Features

Safety features are built into the launcher’s electronic controls. These include a 60-second, ± 10 second safety lockout after the launcher ARMED/SAFE switch is placed in the ARMED position. For added safety during loading and unloading, a Cartridge Plate Interlock Switch prevents firing when the Cartridge Plate is removed. Whenever power is removed, or disrupted, there will be a 60 second, ± 10 second safety lockout when power is restored. There will be a 60 second, ± 10 safety lockout when the mode select switch is moved. If either the mode select or the LED fails the launcher will not ARM.

WARNING: The Cartridge Plate should be removed only when the launcher is in the SAFE (off) position and only during loading and unloading of cartridges.

NOTE: During maintenance operations, if the Cartridge Plate is removed (only with test lights or unloaded state) and the LED is not alternating green to red, the Cartridge Plate Interlock Switch is defective (shorted in the closed position). If this happens, the defective Cartridge Plate Interlock Switch should be removed and replaced. The operator should only remove plate for loading or unloading live or expended cartridges with the Omega 60 B/2 in the off position.

2.1.3 - OMEGA 60/B2 BES Architecture

This configuration offers access to 6 firing modes, using the Mode Selector Switch. Mode 0 is used for FASIT application.

Modes 1 – 5 are used for ERETS application only. Modes 6 – 9 are locked out, and provide for future expanded launcher capability.

2.1.4 - Targetry/Omega 60/B2 Power Options

Power is provided from the target pit to the C2 connector on the OMEGA 60/B2 BES system. Primary Power will be provided via a 120-VAC plug connection to the power module. An additional 4-foot cable is connected between the 12- VDC side of the power module to the OMEGA 60/B2 BES connector.

An alternate setup is to use the 12-VDC auxiliary power cable to connect between the OMEGA 60/B2 BES C2 connector and a 12-VDC battery. In either case, always shut off the power or disconnect the power source at a distance from the OMEGA 60/B2 BES before approaching.

The SAT Pit configuration will have a National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) enclosure that houses an Ethernet hub where one of these ports will be connected with a 25 foot VP Communication Ethernet cable via the pigtail to the FASIT S2 connector for message communication.

Specific features of the targetry are further explained in Section 3.2 of this manual.

NOTE: The term router or Ethernet hub, switch and ports are used interchangeably. These terms only imply an Ethernet connection point to communicate FASIT message protocol to and from the Omega 60 B/2 and the Universal Target Controller (UTC) located at the Range Operating Center (ROC).

Power Requirements: +11 to +16 VDC, The Omega 60 has a current load draw of the following:

• The operational (Non-Firing Mode) has a maximum current draw of 0.5 A with an average current draw of less than 0.25 A.

• The operational (Firing Mode) has a maximum current draw of 2.5 A @ 16VDC and 1.5 A @ 12VDC.

NOTE: For load calculations recommend using 12 V at 1.5 AMPS when firing as worse case load if the power supply is consistently producing approximately 12V to power the launcher. Also take into consideration that firing is only a fraction of the time compared to idle time when the launcher is only drawing on average 250 milliamps when the launcher is in the idle state.

Digital Trigger: FASIT – software fire commands (Set Fire and Fire) – See Section 6.0 in later in this manual.

Analog Trigger: Not applicable for FASIT operation.

Minimum Trigger Voltage:

Not applicable for FASIT operation, used only when launcher is in ERETS operation.

Described in ERETS manual.

Maximum Trigger Voltage:

Not applicable for FASIT operation, used only when launcher is in ERETS operation.

NOTE: See Section 6.0 for Ethernet protocol and firmware message set definitions for FASIT Pyrotechnic devices.

2.2 - Functional Description

The OMEGA 60/B2 BES is capable of six different firing modes, though only Mode 0 is used for FASIT application. (Mode Selector Switch positions 1 through 5 are for ERETS use only, as described in a separate ERETS Technical Manual.) In Mode 0, the firing positions are internally divided into four zones:

Zone Cartridge Positions 1 1 – 20 2 21 – 40 3 41 – 50 4 51 – 60

This chapter provides the operator with a description of the firing zones, diagrams showing the individual firing chambers and their load maps, and an explanation of the firing procedure. Also provided are images of available cartridges and, based on zones, suggested loading sequences.

2.2.1 - Firing Scenario

The OMEGA 60/B2 BES is pre-programmed with the modes listed in Table 2.3. The desired firing mode is selected by indexing the Mode Selector Switch located on the launcher’s front control panel. Each time the Mode Selector Switch is indexed, the firing sequence resets to chamber 1 within each zone of the selected mode. After indexing to a new mode and pausing for five-second delay, a Built-In-Test (BIT) occurs. (See Section 4.1.7). This is indicated by the LED blinking from red to green four times. Immediately following the BIT, the LED remains illuminated green for a 60-second (±10 second) safety delay before the ARMED LED changes to red, meaning the launcher is ready to fire.

NOTE: Remember, however, that FASIT launchers use Mode 0 only; Modes 1 – 5 are for use on ERETS ranges.

Modes 6-9 are reserved for future use.

Chapter 3 – Installation Instructions

3.1 - Preparation For Mounting

The OMEGA 60/B2 BES is easy to install and configure for operation. The following sections discuss launcher preparation for safe and proper use.

3.1.1 OMEGA 60/B2 BES Footprint and Mounting Dimensions

Figure 3.0 shows the OMEGA 60/B2 BES footprint, mounting holes, and dimensions. The Omega 60/B2 BES dimensions are 13.29” Width (including the fins) x 25.66” Length (including the handles) and 9.0” Height. The distance between mounting holes is 22.63 inches center to center, and 5.38 inches center to center.

Figure 3.0 - OMEGA 60/B2 BES Foot Print Dimensions

3.1.2 - Mounting the OMEGA 60/B2 BES

The OMEGA 60/B2 BES should be securely fastened to either a SAT Mounting Bracket (Figure 3.1) or to a MAT Mounting Bracket (Figure 3.2). The types and models of the targetry may vary, but the principle of connecting and interfacing remains the same. The following pictures show targetry and the common means of connecting the OMEGA 60/B2 BES.

WARNING: Due to the heat and flash effect of the Hostile Fire signature, which can scorch the wood revetment wall, range personnel may elect to install sheet metal plate on the wall behind the OMEGA 60/B2 BES.

Figure 3.1 - Stationary Armored Target Mounting Bracket

NOTE: The OMEGA 60/B2 BES can operate on the ground if a retaining wall is not available. It is recommended that the launcher be placed on a wooden pallet or stand to keep it off the ground. It is optimal to have the launcher mounted on an appropriate Mounting Bracket to help protect it. For long term storage for additional protection keep (expended cartridges or empty chambers) launcher covered with environmental cover.

Figure 3.1 shows a typical SAT mounting bracket using lag bolts to secure it to a wood revetment. The launcher is held on the bracket by clevis pins that allow the launcher to be moved for increased flexibility, e.g., to put it at a greater distance from the Electronic Control Unit (ECU).

The launcher and mounting bracket may also be mounted to a concrete wall using a concrete anchor bolt set. The FASIT pigtail is shown with the RJ45 Amphenol Ethernet male cable connected, and with the other end connected to the female RJ-45 Amphenol RJF2PE1G Field data connector. Further explanation is given in Section 3.3.1.

3.2 - Mounting Omega 60/B2 BES on Mat

3.2.1 - MAT Requirements

There must be a mounting bracket or plate on the MAT, and sufficient space to mount the OMEGA 60/B2 BES horizontally.

WARNING: If possible, mount the OMEGA 60/B2 BES the maximum distance from the remote power on/off switch located on the MAT that turns off power to the device. This allows separation for range personnel to power the launcher on and off. Also, position the OMEGA 60/B2 BES so the control panel faces away from the MAT’s high-voltage power bus (if applicable).

3.2.2 - Vertical Mounting of the OMEGA 60/B2 BES on a Caswell DP62 MAT (for illustrative purposes only)

The OMEGA 60/B2 BES is mounted vertically by using the Caswell Moving Armored Target Bracket (P/N O60.003027), which extends the existing DP62 MAT bracket (Figure 3.2A) originally designed for the device. Using this mounting bracket extends the MAT’s footprint. This MAT bracket can only be used on MATs that are powered by a generator; it cannot be used when there is a power bus parallel to the launcher.

On MAT’s with the power bus, it is recommend to use the optional horizontal mounting bracket, (Figure 2.4) This bracket has been designed to allow this on supporting MAT brackets with baselined 9 inch horizontal dimension. Each MAT needs to be surveyed regardless of the model and/or manufacture due to the lack of mounting standardization on the MATS. The preferred orientation of the launcher is horizontal mounting that does not extend the foot print of the MAT shown below in Figure 3.2B.

3.3 - Omega 60/B2 BES Cabling and Connectivity

3.3.1 - FASIT Pigtail Connector Cable

The FASIT Pigtail Connector Cable connects the (CAT) Category 5 Ethernet-type cable, provided by the range, to the S2 Connector on the OMEGA 60/B2 BES. The cable required for communication between the emplacement data receptacle and the OMEGA 60/B2 BES is category 6 (CAT 6), 24 American wire gauge (AWG) stranded, braided-shield, ultraviolet (UV)-resistant cable.

This cable is wired in accordance with ANSI/TIA/EIA-568B standard. See Figures 1.20, 1.21, and 1.22. In conjunction with the pigtail a vermin proof shielded Ethernet RJ45 Amphenol male - male connector will be attached between the Ethernet female side of the pigtail connector shown in Figure 3.4 and the Ethernet switch or hub to provide a link for message communication to and from the UTC located in the ROC.

The Omega 60 B/2 was primarily procured and Material Released (MR) by the Army to support FOT applications to support combat vehicle gunnery training. However the Omega 60 B/2 can be used in the FASIT mode on any pit configuration as long as there is Ethernet communication link to allow the message protocol to and from the UTC.

Chapter 4 – Operational Instructions

4.1 - Loading/Unloading the Omega 60/B2 BES

• Personnel not directly involved in loading/unloading of the omega 60/B2 BES must remain 10.3 meters (34 feet) from the launcher during loading/unloading.

• Personnel loading/unloading the device must be trained and certified by satisfactory completion of the omega 60/B2 BES training course, and adhere to the local range’s standard operating procedures and installation safety rules and regulations.

• TDSI recommends that personnel wear OSHA-approved, full-face shield, nomex gloves, and hearing protection.

4.1.1 - Pre-Operational Procedures

Before loading M34 (NSN: 1370-01-534-9191, DODIC: LA54) and M35 (NSN: 1370-01-534-7733, DODIC: LA53) cartridges, ensure that the OMEGA 60/B2 BES has been properly installed and serviced, and is free of visual damage and other conditions that indicate a need for maintenance.

4.1.2 - ARMED/SAFE Switch

When approaching the OMEGA 60/B2 BES, make sure first of all that the front control panel’s ARMED/SAFE switch is in the SAFE position.

• When the firing signal is controlled from a remote location (i.e., control tower or remote hand-held radio), ensure that all means of communicating with the omega 60/B2 BES are off before approaching the launcher.

• In addition, verify that the omega 60/B2 BES is turned off by checking from a distance that the armed led is not illuminated.

• The armed/safe switch on the launcher should be in the safe position before setting it up, loading it, unloading it, reconfiguring the cabling, or undertaking any other procedure.

4.1.3 – Loading, Unloading Cartridges, and Arming the OMEGA 60/B2 BES

• Disconnect any remote power source from the OMEGA 60/B2 BES.

• When approaching the OMEGA 60/B2 BES, make sure the front control panel’s ARMED/SAFE switch is in the

SAFE position.

NOTE: See Resetting the Firing Sequence (Section 4.1.8) prior to loading the OMEGA 60/B2 BES.

• Touch either handle of the launcher to discharge static electricity.

• Unlatch and remove the Cartridge Plate

• Unload spent, and misfired cartridges (see section 4.2.1 4.2.2 for unloading procedures)

• Remove the M34 (NSN: 1370-01-534-9191, DODIC: LA54) and/or M35 (NSN: 1370-01-534-9191, DODIC:

LA53) Cartridges from their shipping or storage container. Visually inspect the cartridges for any sign of damage.

NOTE: If cartridges are damaged, follow EOD procedures, as detailed in Section 4.2.2.

• If the cartridges and launcher have no visual damage, install the cartridges in the desired configuration. Load by starting from the cartridge chamber furthest from you and moving toward the chamber closest. Do not lean over the launcher when loading.

• Replace the Cartridge Plate and fasten both latches.

• Reconnect the power source to the OMEGA 60/B2 BES.

• Index the Mode Selector Switch to Mode 0.

• Switch the ARMED/SAFE Switch to the ARMED position, watch for the LED Built-In-Tests (BIT) (see Section

4.1.4), and immediately step a minimum of 34 feet away from the device.

• Immediately following the BIT, the OMEGA 60/B2 BES will cycle through a 60-second (±10 second) safety delay lockout. During this lock-out, the launcher will not fire if the fire message protocol is received. If a fire command is sent, the launcher will not store the signal (i.e., it will not fire after the safety delay expires). After this 60-second safety lock-out, the LED will change from green to red and stay illuminated red, indicating that the OMEGA 60/B2 BES is in armed status.

WARNING: If the OMEGA 60/B2 BES receives a SET FIRE command while it is arming, or when in a failed BIT status (a non-operational state), it will respond with a COMMAND ACK message of NON-COMPLY in the appropriate field. The UTC should not send a FIRE command message when a SET FIRE, NON-COMPLY response is received at the UTC. If Omega 60 is receiving fire commands during arming or when in BIT please report this violation of the safety protocol to the Range Manger and appropriate authorities See Chapter 6.0 for further information on Ethernet message protocol.

WARNING: It is standard protocol never to send a fire signal to the launcher until the launcher is armed and all personnel are beyond the surface danger zone (SDZ).

WARNING: It is standard protocol always to approach the BES launcher with the target in the down position.

4.1.4 - Cartridge Types

The OMEGA 60/B2 BES fires assorted cartridges for various battlefield effect signatures. Only the M34 (DODIC LA54) Hostile Fire and M35 (DODIC LA53) Target Hit, White Star cartridges are available for use in the U.S. Army (see Figure 4.0). The icon printed on the top of the cartridge shows its use.

M34 (DODIC LA54) Hostile Fire (Orange Icon). The M34 (DODIC LA54) Hostile Fire Cartridge simulates large-caliber hostile gunfire. It emits an orange flash and white smoke, and is visible at 1800 meters. Infrared visibility is 3000 meters, with 130 ± 10 dB maximum sound levels at 20 meters.

M35 (DODIC LA53) Target Hit, White Star (Silver Icon). The M35 (DODIC LA53) Target Hit Cartridge simulates a target hit. It projects 8 to 12 white burning stars into the air, also visible at 1800 meters. Infrared visibility is 3000 meters, with 125 ± 15 dB maximum sound levels at 20 meters.

4.1.6 - Built-In Tests (BIT) and System Initialization

Each time the OMEGA 60/B2 BES is ARMED (turned ON), a combination of Built-In-Test (BIT) and system initialization checks (System Checks) are performed to detect any hardware or configuration faults. The OMEGA 60/B2 BES system has a BIT cycle that it executes automatically on powering up.

The following is the sequence of tests the system cycles through and scenarios that occur. When BIT has started, the sequence of the LED indicator (located on the launcher’s control panel) is the following:

• Four sets of flashes - (green for a half-second, then red for a half-second, green, red, green, red, green, and red)

– all for a half-second each. The half-second flashes do not represent the actual, real time of a test, since the tests occur in a fraction of a second after power-on. The LED flashes only provide a visual cue for the operator to tell whether the tests occurred, what they are, and if the system passed.

• If any of the four BIT checks fail, the visual cues will halt and the LED will flash from red to green in one-second intervals until the fault is corrected and the launcher is re-armed. When the launcher is re-armed, the unit will again initiate the BIT. If the BIT is successful, the ARMED LED will illuminate green for a 60-second safety delay and then turn red and remain red, which is a visual indicator that the launcher is armed and ready for use.

A combination of BIT fault tests and system checks are performed as follows:

A BIT is automatically executed when the system is initially powered on.

• This is the first step of the 60-second safety lockout, during which the firing circuit is disengaged.

Four tests are executed with green and red LED flashes, as described below.

• First two flashes: When the OMEGA 60/B2 BES is powered up (by switching the ARMED/SAFE switch to ARMED) the first test resets the ADC (Analog-to-Digital Converter), loads firing parameters from the EEPROM (Electrically Erasable-Programmable Read-Only Memory), and performs validity checks on each parameter. If no parameter errors are detected, the LED flashes green, then red.

• Second two flashes: This next test verifies that the cover cartridge plate is installed properly on the launcher. If the plate is seated on the launcher, the LED emits the second pair of green and red flashes. (NOTE: This does not necessarily mean the plate latches are fastened; but only verifies the plate is seated on the launcher.) If the plate passes the BIT test, the next BIT test occurs (below). If the BIT fails, the LED goes from an initial half-second green and red flash to one-second green and red alternating flashes.

• Third two flashes: The next test checks the ARMED LED operation. If the ARMED LED light is operable (drawing current), the unit will flash green and red at half-second intervals and proceed to the next test. If the LED is inoperable (not working), the BIT test will be halted, though there may be no visual cues.

WARNING: When live or expended cartridges are in the launcher’s chamber, standard protocol demands that the launcher be in the SAFE/OFF position before the Cartridge Plate can be removed.

NOTE: During maintenance procedures, using test cartridges, if the plate is removed and the LED is NOT alternating from green to red, the interlock switch is defective (shorted in the closed position) and the launcher, detecting that the plate has been removed, will bypass the BIT test and go to ARMED status.

WARNING: If it is determined that the launcher has power, and the LED is not illuminated, pull the launcher off-line immediately for maintenance. If the LED is not working, the launcher may still be powered on but there may be no visual cue for the operator. LED BIT test will fail and the firing circuit will be disengaged.
