SW1200 Manual 1 Revised 02/2021
The SW1200 Seawater Desalinator is a single-pass purification system that uses reverse osmosis (RO) to produce potable water from seawater. Product water with salt concentrations of < 500 ppm are achieved by removing approximately 99% of the dissolved salt in seawater.
INSTALLATION
Refer to the Process Flow Diagram at the back of this manual for aid in identifying the components.
The RO unit should be installed in a dry, sheltered location protected from freezing and from direct weather. Drainage or Mounting Plinth should be provided beneath the RO unit to allow standing water to drain when performing maintenance or repair.
Installation can be in a boat or ship, or as a land based unit on shore.
Installation Diagram
Shipboard Installation with RO Above Water-Line
Shipboard installations can be above or below water line, however when above the feed pump must be separate from the RO with a flooded suction.
Raw water inlet from seachest or through-hull with sea cock, low as practical and towards the stern of the boat on the opposite side to waste discharges.
Reject discharge line overboard, above water line preferred.
It is important that the product water line is connected to fill from the top of the storage tank with an air gap, to prevent tank water from siphoning back into the watermaker.
Feed pump below water line with flooded suction. Optional Media Prefilter is installed between feed pump and RO unit;
shipboard prefilters are normally manual control to avoid permanent pressurization of feed water
SW1200 Manual 2 Revised 02/2021
Land based installations can sometimes utilize direct feed water supply to the RO from a beachwell pump, submersible pump or shallow well lift pump. Some installations rely on a seawater buffer tank and a separate feed pump from the tank to the RO.
Including a break tank allows more stable and reliable operation and provides the opportunity for settling and oxidation. Considering the advantages in certain installations, and break tank feed system is the standard recommendation.
The RO will require approximately 5 GPM seawater while operating. The recommendation is to supply seawater to the RO at 10 psi minimum, 30 psi preferable.
Some feed pump arrangements will rely on an on-demand pressure switch to automatically run the feed when needed. When the RO is stopped the RO inlet valve will close and the feed pump pressure increase to trip a pressure switch to stop the pump. With that configuration, consider a pressure tank to avoid sudden pressure fluctuations during start and stop. If seawater supply is shared with other equipment, ensure that backflow or cross contamination is prevented, and that air cannot be drawn into the RO inlet when the adjacent equipment is off.
A pressurized fresh water supply is required for membrane flushing. Supply should be 20 psi minimum pressure. A carbon filter is provided on the RO to remove any active chlorine that might be used as a disinfectant (to protect the membranes from oxydation).
CAUTION
Inlet and product interconnecting lines should be constructed of a NON- FERROUS material. Examples of some suitable materials are PVC, copper-nickel, 316 stainless steel pipe or a reinforced hose. Ferrous piping introduces iron that will foul the membranes prematurely.
RO concentrate water should be piped overboard or to drain without any restriction or valve, preferably above water line. An air gap to drain is always recommended to eliminate any possible backflow.
Many shipboard installations require the provision of an isolation valve. In these cases, ensure by tagout or interconnection that there is no possibility of running the RO unit when the valve is inadvertently closed.
Product water to storage tank should always enter the tank at the top with an air gap to eliminate any possible backflow and to remove the necessity of any isolation valve.
A dangerous condition can be created if the product water is inadvertently closed with a valve during operation of the RO unit.
SW1200 Manual 3 Revised 02/2021
Connect a single electrical power feed to the RO watermaker at the breaker in the top right of the RO control panel. Select a circuit capacity larger than the operating amps shown on the serial number tag according to local electrical practice. A local power disconnect should be located in the same room or machinery space as the installation.
If an Ethernet cable (Cat5 or Cat6) is to be connected for data communications, it should be connected directly to the controller inside the RO control enclosure. If other alarm signals or remote shutdown command are required, contact the manufacturer for details.
Connection of the two modules together requires terminating the pump power wires and one pressure sensor from the pump module to the control box.
Sensor is terminated at the 4th terminal block, yellow on top, red at second level, black on bottom
Motor is terminated at the bottom of the contactor
For 3 phase power supply units, the direction of rotation pump motors must be verified.
The RO pump should turn clockwise when viewed from the fan end of the motor
Strictly observe all applicable electrical codes and regulations governing the installation and wiring of electrical equipment. Typical codes specify the type and size of conduit, wire diameter and class of wire insulation depending upon the amperage and environment. The power supply should always be of a greater service rating than the requirements of the RO unit. Never connect the RO unit to a line that services another electrical device, the RO unit should have its own breaker.
Disconnect electrical power to RO unit prior to servicing the RO watermaker.

OPERATION and CONTROLS
The Main screen allows control of the RO, and displays operational parameters. Note the colors of the buttons quickly indicate the status, green for operating, blue for off and ready, orange-red for alarm condition. Also the gauges have a color indication of blue for the normal operating range and red for low or out-of-range condition. The screen is formatted in three columns so that it will display on a smart phone with an easy scroll arrangement.
From this screen it is also possible to manually flush the RO unit.
Navigating to other screens is by the drop down menu at the top left.
MAIN SCREEN:
MONITORING
SW1200 Manual 8 Revised 02/2021
The Settings screen allows adjustment of levels and timers to allow customization to the installation conditions.
The Inlet Pressure Fault and the Pressure Fault Delay work together to prevent the RO unit from running dry. To create a Pressure Fault Alarm shutdown, the inlet pressure must be below the setpoint for the number of seconds set in the delay. Setting the delay to zero seconds is used to bypass the alarm (and the Inlet Pressure will display grayed out on the Main Screen).
The slide switch Flush on Shutdown when pushed to the right will initiate the membrane flushing everytime the RO is switched off (not when it turns off from E-stop or alarm).
Flush on Shutdown is recommended, the fresh water introduced at shutdown will prevent organic growth inside the membrane during the idle period.
The slide switch Resume after Power Reset when pushed to the right will return the unit to the previous state after a power interruption. When pushed to the left, the RO will be off upon return of power.
In the center are sensor parameters can used to ensure accurate sensor readings.
They may need to be reset if the sensors are changed.
The right column is for calibration of the TDS sensor. Check the section specifically describing the TDS sensor.

INITIAL START UP PROCEDURE
1) Initial startup following installation requires extra checks and procedures: oil level in the pump, pressure relief valve setting, pressure fault setting and sensor checks. Once the initial settings are established, routine start up is simply to make sure any installation isolation valves are open and push the RO On button.
2) Check the pump oil level, which should be halfway up the sightglass. It may be necessary to use a mirror to read the sightglass. Details of pump service are found at the back of this manual, the pump manufacturer recommends first oil change at 50 hours, and subsequently at 500 operating hours or 3 months whichever comes first.
3) Verify that all filter housings are fitted with the correct filters.
4) Open the raw saltwater supply to the unit. Open any isolation valves in the concentrate drain discharge and the permeate piping to tank. Open the Product Sample valve on the RO unit.
5) Verify the pressure control valve is open, counterclockwise. This valve does not have to be reset every start once the correct operating position is set. If there is any doubt of the setting, open the valve for start and reset while operating.
6) In the controller Manual screen, turn the manual mode On and open the Open the Inlet valve. The valve should turn, and water pressure should be present at the prefilter and inlet gauges. Watch the flow through the visual flowmeter and continue until most of the air is purged out.
7) Use the Manual screen to bump the RO pump, and check rotation. Change wiring if required to correct the rotation.
8) Confirm that the inlet pressure can maintain minimum 10 psi while the RO pump is running. If so, slowly close the Pressure Control Valve to bring the RO pressure up to 700 to 800 psi. Find an operating pressure that results in 35 to 50 gallons per hour production depending on water temperature. Do not exceed 1000 psi and do not close the valve all the way.
9) Set the pressure relief valve to 850 or 900 psi. The valve is adjusted by the allen key nut that is visible after the discharge hose is removed.
10) On the Manual screen, stop the RO pump and close the inlet valve. Open the flush valve. Confirm fresh water moving through the unit. Use the flowrate to determine the correct flushing duration. A complete flush of the prefilters, pump and membrane will require 4 to 5 gallons of fresh water. If the flushing flow is 20 gph, the flush duration should be set to 10 to 15 minutes. If the fresh water pressure is low, it may be necessary to disable the automatic flush and have the
SW1200 Manual 13 Revised 02/2021 operator conduct regular flushing manually. If the Pressure Control Valve is turned open, the flush water will flow much more quickly, but will require resetting the Pressure Control Valve at each start.
11) On the Manual controller screen, turn off everything and turn off the Manual mode. On the Main RO Operations screen, it is now possible to push start for regular one-button startup. Once running, check all the sensor readings to compare with the analog gauges.
MEMBRANE FLUSHING PROCEDURE
Regular fresh water flushing is the single most important preventative maintenance necessary for every seawater RO. Every time the RO membrane treats seawater, it is exposed to bacteria and organic matter naturally in the sea. During operation, the constantly flowing water restricts growth. During idle periods, biological growth increases the longer stagnant seawater is in contact with the membranes. A fresh water flush inhibits growth, as the seawater bacteria cannot flourish in fresh water.
Flushing is simply filling the RO micron filters, pump and membrane with freshwater, so the saltwater bacteria cannot grow and thrive.
The flush system consists of a solenoid valve and a carbon filter to remove any chlorine that might be in the fresh water supply. The settings screen allows automatic flush on shutdown and sets the flush duration. If autoflush in not enabled, manually initate the flush sequence from the RO operations screen. 4 to 5 gallons of fresh water should be used for a complete flush to replace all the seawater inside. If the Pressure Control Valve is opened during manually initiated flush, the flushing will be much more vigorous and quick.
It is important to flush whenever the unit will be idle. If the RO is run at least once every day, flushing is not as important.
If the unit will be off for more than two days, then try to flush after shutdown and to repeat the flush once every three days for the duration of the idle time.

NEAR SHORE OPERATIONS
The RO system will perform best with clean seawater feed. In very turbid or polluted sea conditions, the RO units should not be operated. The Ferdinand Hassler routinely sails in shallow waters and must evaluate when conditions are suitable for RO operation. Policy should follow applicable NOAA and USCG regulations.
The comments below are provided to assist with interpreting the near shore regulations and guidelines appropriately for the FH.
1) The primary concern when operating near shore should be contamination of the RO equipment resulting in more frequent filter change and short membrane life.
There is a very low risk of producing contaminated potable water. Keep in mind the RO membrane is tight enough to remove 99% of dissolved sodium ions, and so the chance of larger particles of pollution or contamination passing are quite remote.
2) Concern is for suspended solids in the seawater and also for pollutants which are always a higher risk near shore. Pollutants such as oily water especially need to be avoided as fats and oils will quickly blind the filters. Solvents will pass the prefilters and damage the RO membrane.
3) Inert suspended solids will be successfully blocked at the micron filters, but the filter change will be more frequent.
4) Monitoring the operation will provide experience for the crew to evaluate conditions. The micron prefilters have pressure indication upstream and downstream both with visual gauges and onscreen. The pressure differential will grow as the filters get dirty, providing the indication to change filters. The membrane is evaluated primarily on production in gallons per hour which will indicate fouling. Monitoring and logging this information in different conditions will help the crew determine when it RO operation is feasible and what conditions should be avoided. Averages of the pressure and flow readings are included in the Daily Status email, if the RO controller has a internet connection allowing it to reach a gmail server.
SW1200 Manual 15 Revised 02/2021
LONG TERM LAY-UP
Different procedures can protect the RO system during long idle periods such as shipyard visits.
If the RO will not be operated but the ship will be manned and potable water supply is available during the idle period, the best long term procedure will be to manually conduct the fresh water flush procedure once per week. That introduces no chemicals, and yet will prevent growth in the membrane. The manual flush is a one-button procedure.
If weekly flushing is not possible, next consider the membrane state. Preserving or pickling the RO is done to protect the membrane. These RO units have only one membrane element each, so if the membrane already has many hours operation consider the best approach may be to discard the membrane, drain water from everything possible, and to install a fresh new membrane when operation resumes.
Compare the work and risk of introducing the chemicals to the cost of a fresh membrane.
If the chemical preservation is desired to protect the membrane, the chemical to use is food grade sodium metabisulfate (a common food preservative). Introducing a solution into the membrane is easiest accomplished by pouring a solution into the Flush Carbon Filter Housing. Open the white housing, remove and set aside the carbon filter element, spoon in 200 grams chemical, fill with potable water, and shake or stir to dissolve.
Once fit back in position, then conduct a 1 minute flush procedure with the Pressure Control Valve fully open. Note that potable water pressure is required for this, so conduct the procedure prior to other systems shut-down. Once the preservative is introduced, stop and the isolate the RO system to keep the preservative inside the membrane. Now the membrane is preserved or “pickled” and should be OK for up to 6 months. When service is resumed, use the Sample Valve to divert product water to drain for 15 minutes after first start. If freeze protection is needed in addition to pickling, use either a solution of propylene gycol (sold as RV Antifreeze) or a 40% mix of glycerin in water.
SW1200 Manual 16 Revised 02/2021
TDS WATER QUALITY SENSOR
The water quality sensor measures the electrical conductivity of the product water. The more pure the water, the lower the conductivity will be. This is normally converted to an approximation of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) in parts per million (ppm). WHO standards for drinking water is < 1000 ppm TDS, but ships commonly use <500 ppm as a safer limit. The sensor can be calibrated as shown below.
The calibration is done by adjusting the Offset and the Scale. Offset is set with the probe pulled out and in the air (zero conductivity in air). Depending on the pipe routing to tank, it may be necessary to use a temporary plug while doing the calibration. The default Offset value is 0. While in air, adjust the offset until the TDS reading shows zero. The Scale calibration is done in a known solution. If a buffer solution is not available, use a glass of water and dissolve some table salt and use a hand tester to verify the solution TDS. The default Scale value is 1.00. Adjust the scale value up and down until the TDS reading matches the hand tester or known buffer solution. Most accurate calibration will be to use a known solution of 300 to 500 ppm TDS.

MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS
Regular oil change is required for the pump. After the initial 50 hour first change, regular changes should be every 500 hours. As a guideline, for systems averaging 12 hours running per day, the oil change should be every 5 to 6 weeks. The pump has an oil level window at the back, it may be necessary to use a mirror to read it. Oil level should be halfway up the window while the pump is stopped.
Detailed pump service is covered in the pump Manual appended to this document.
The pump discharge is fitted with a pressure relief valve connected to a ¾” flex hose. The intent is to position the hose where a discharge will be noticed for corrective action. The spring of the PRV is set by an allen screw which is visible only when the hose is removed (as shown in the photo). The PRV cracking pressure should be set just above the pump operating pressure. For instance if sea conditions are such that the RO is normally running at 800 to 850 psi, then set the relief valve to 900 psi.
Oil Fill Cap
Pressure Relief Valve, turn the hex screw clockwise to raise the cracking pressure
SW1200 Manual 18 Revised 02/2021
Just before the product water outlet to the Potable Water Storage Tanks, there is a white 3-way valve for sampling or testing. With the lever straight as shown in the photo, the flow is to tank. Turning the lever 90 degrees diverts water to a sample tube.
This can be used for testing the RO watermaker before sending the water to tank.

INTENDED USE:
The CodeLine Model 40E100 Fiberglass RO Pressure
Vessel is designed for continuous, long term use as housing for reverse osmosis membrane elements to desalt typical sea waters at pressures up to 1000 psi. Any make of four-inch nominal diameter spiral-wound element is easily accommodated; the appropriate interfacing hardware for the element specified is furnished with the vessel.
The CodeLine Model 40E100 is designed in accordance with the engineering standards of the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code of the American Society of Mechanical
Engineers (ASME Code) Section X. At small additional cost, vessels can be inspected during construction by an
ASME Authorized inspector and ASME Code stamped.
The CodeLine Model 40E100 must be installed, operated and maintained in accordance with the listed precautions and good industrial practice to assure safe operation over a long service life.
The high performance reinforced plastic shell must be allowed to expand under pressure; undue restraint at support points or piping connections can cause leaks to develop in the shell. The end closure, incorporating close fitting, interlocking metal components, must be kept dry and free of corrosion; deterioration can lead to catastrophic mechanical failure of the head.
The end closures, incorporating close-fitting, interlocking metal components, must be kept dry and free of corrosion;
deterioration can lead to catastrophic mechanical failure of the heads.
Pentair will assist the purchaser in determining the suitability of this standard vessel for their specific operating conditions. The final determination however, including evaluation of the standard material of construction for compatibility with the specific corrosive environment, shall be the responsibility of the purchaser.
Specifications are subject to change without notice.
PRECAUTIONS:
DO…read, understand and follow all instructions; failure to take every precaution will void warranty and may result in vessel failure
DO…mount the shell on horizontal members at span “S” using complaint vessel supports furnished; tighten hold down straps just snug
DO…provide overpressure protection for vessel set at not more than 105% of design pressure
DO…inspect end closures regularly; replace components that have deteriorated and correct causes of corrosion
DO NOT… make rigid piping connections to ports or clamp vessel in any way that resists growth of fiberglass shell under pressure;
∆DIA = 0.02 in. (0.5mm) and ∆L = 0.2 in.
(5mm) for a length code –6 vessel
DO NOT… hang piping manifolds from ports or use vessel in any way to support other components;
DO NOT… operate vessel at pressures and temperatures in excess of its rating
DO NOT… operate vessel without permeate ports internally connected with a complete set of elements and interconnecting hardware
DO NOT… operate vessel with permeate pressure in excess of 125 psi at 120°F
(0.86 MPa @ 49°C)
DO NOT… overtighten the connection to the permeate port (hand-tighten plus one-quarter turn, check for leaks)
DO NOT… tolerate leaks or allow end closures to be routinely wetted in any way
DO NOT… pressurize vessel until double-checking to verify that the retaining ring is completely inside the groove
DO NOT… work on any component until first verifying that pressure is relieved from vessel
DO NOT… operate outside the pH range 3-11
Spiral Retaining Ring Removal Tool (50303) Recommended to open and close vessel.
