About this file
This document contains a shipyard report regarding inspection and recommended replacement of propellers for the NOAA ship FERDINAND HASSLER. The report details the results of measuring and assessing the condition of the ship's two bronze propellers, noting significant electrolysis, erosion, and pitch deviations throughout the blades. The non-destructive testing indicated issues but did not find failures. Given the amount of electrolysis and material wear, replacement of both propellers with new manufactured propellers is recommended. The related federal contract opportunity is a request for quote for FY24 dry dock repairs to the NOAA ship FERDINAND HASSLER from the Department of Commerce National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Vessel: NOAA HASSLER
Propellers: D 90.00” x P 87.05” x 5-blade Mag-Bronze Propellers
These propellers measured as follows:
LH (WCP121185) RH (WCP121186)
Diameter 89.813” 90.000”
Mean Measured Pitch 77.020” 78.404”
Pitch Blade 1 76.909” 78.268”
Pitch Blade 2 76.774” 77.452”
Pitch Blade 3 76.670” 77.891”
Pitch Blade 4 77.330” 78.890”
Pitch Blade 5 77.417” 79.521”
Conforms to ISO 484 Class II less than Class II
Assessment: Both propellers have significant electrolysis and material erosion throughout the entire blade surface. The LH propeller is significantly shorter in blade width than the RH propeller. Blade pitch and section pitch is significantly high and does not conform to tolerance as shown in the report. The
NDT results did not indicate failures per acceptance criteria MIL-STD-2035 or ABS standards but did indicate significant electrolysis along the entire propeller surface as well as numerous rounded indications exceeding tolerance in the spoke welds of the hub as discussed with ABS. The propellers have several gouges throughout the blade surfaces along with gouges throughout the blade edges.
Recommendation: Due to the amount of electrolysis and material erosion it is recommended to replace both propellers with spare propellers in acceptable condition if available or replace propellers with new manufactured propellers.
