PART Ill TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION.

3.1 Davit functions.

VESTDA VIT AS

Doc. No.: VDT - UMH - 8001

VESTDAVIT Type H-6000 is a hydraulic operated twin- suspension davit designed for effective safe lowering/hoisting of life-/working boat, up to 6000 kg total weight.

All operations of the davit are hydraulic driven which benefits control of the boat position at all stages during the operation, and gives the opportunity to bring the boat back onboard in any position required at any time.

The davit arms are hinged on the deck nearly under the centreline of the boat. With hydraulic cylinders the davit arms are swung out or inboard, so the boat can be lowered along the ship's side.

In parked position the boat is normally resting on keel supports and sides, secured by two or more lashings.

Embarkation of the boat can take place in parked position of the davit, or in a parked position on ships side in deck level.

The davit is operated by one person from the operator's console and should have a location that gives a clear view to the boat launching.

Launching of the boat is done by swinging the davit from its parked position to a position where the lifeboat is free of the ships side and then lowered by means of the winch.

This two-step operation makes it possible to swing the davit backwards after lowering the lifeboat below deck, allowing the boat to rest along the ships side, preventing it from excessive movements in rough weather conditions, or to park the lifeboat along the ship side for embarkation/disembarkation.

The davit is fitted with a mechanical end stop on hoisting that will work in parallel with the release valve.

3.2 Winch.

The winch is constructed with four main elements:

1) Wire drum and winch foundation with bearing brackets.

The drum is at drive end directly connected to the gear and gear bearings, and in the other end roller bearing on the winch bracket. The drum is divided in two separate sections, each grooved. The wire is entered in the middle between the drums.

2) Gear.

The reduction gear is a planetary gear flanged directly to the frame.

Transmission from motor to gear is made by a splined flange coupling.

3) Between gear and hydraulic motor there is a automatic spring-loaded disc brake working as a parking brake and a mechanical brake. The brake is released by hydraulic pressure.

4) Standard:

Hydraulic motor. The motor is an axial piston motor, fixed displacement.

5) Self Tension (if fitted, extra equipment) Hydraulic motor. The motor is an axial variable piston motor, with hydraulic control to maximum or minimum displacement.

3.3 Hydraulic system.

The winch system consists of hydraulic motor, valve block flanged to motor and hydraulic operated brake.

Hydraulic double acting cylinder for swing out/in, with throttle-check valves.

The manoeuvring unit is a lever operated directional valve. Spring centred 2 spools valve. First bank closed centre for operating cylinder, second bank open centre for winch motor.

The hydraulic power unit consists of a closed reservoir and following equipment :

An electric motor which drives a gear pump through a flexible coupling.

A hydraulic return filter for oils flowing from the davit.

An air breather filter for preventing dirt and dust to enter the tank and vapors to leave.

An oil level gauge.

A temperature indicator.

A manual hand pump for emergency operation of the davit.

4.3 Installation of davit.

VESTDA VIT AS

Doc. No.: VDT - UMH - 8001

For welding to the ship's deck or davit foundations, the davit has two base brackets at davit arm pivot point and two base brackets for the hydraulic cylinders.

Base bracket locations are given on the davit arrangement drawing.

It is important that the base brackets are correctly levelled and that they don't twist during welding. When welding is completed, check that the "hinge-bolts" are "floating".

4.4 Installation of manoeuvring valve.

Manoeuvring valve should be located in a position giving free view to the boat when launching.

A spring-loaded check valve to be installed in the return line (to prevent loss of oil) as close as possible to the manoeuvring valve. Opening pressure 2-3 Bar.

Check the valve in pressure line as well.

4.6 Hydraulic system on ship.

General.

VESTDA VIT AS

Doc. No.: VDT - UMH - 8001

Cleanliness is an absolute requirement for safe operation.

Keep all pipe connections from winch, pump, cylinders etc. plugged until final system connecting is complete. Only plastic plugs or clovers must be used, never paper plugs or cotton waste.

The system is designed for minimum pressure loss. Pipe sizes as shown on system drawings are based on pipe distance max. 1 Om between davit and manoeuvring console. Idle pressure measured at manoeuvring valve shall not exceed 5 bar.

Protect the stainless steel pipes when welding close to the davit.

Choice of pipes.

On long pipelines the velocity must be reduced by increasing the diameter. Pressure head loss and oil velocities must be kept low in pipelines for leakage oil from pumps and motors. These pipelines should go direct to the tank and not be connected to the return line. All bends must be achieved by cold bending without sand- or lead filling. If welding cannot be avoided , the joints should be placed so that they are easy accessible for renovation.

Fittings.

In hydraulic installations, unwelded couplings are preferable. For external diameters up to 42 mm cutring-couplings may be used. First condition of a tight joint is pipe cutting at right angle, using a jig.

External and internal grades must be removed.

Debris must be thoroughly removed using white spirit, compressed air or clean textile cloths. (do not use paper or waste cotton).

Cutring shall be assembled according to the manufacturers specification. The pipes must be properly adjusted/fitted prior to installation.

The conring armature can not pull together pipes that are too short, or straighten distorted bends. When the system has been operated a few days the couplings should be re-tightened. The flange couplings must consist of one male and one female part with "o-ring".

Threaded connections.

Threaded connections do not give complete sealing, therefore sealant is required. Teflon tape is not recommended since it reduces the friction in the thread planes and therefor might burst the threads, especially for cast iron. Furthermore, surplus Teflon can enter the system and create functional problems. Loctite should be used rather than thread tape.

Damsgardsveien 143, N-5162 Laksevag, NORWAY Tel.: +47 55 54 92 00 E-mail: post@vestdavit.no http://www.vestdavit.no

Cleaning of pipes.

VESTDA VIT AS

Doc. No.: VDT - UMH - 8001

All pipes must be clean when assembled. This is very important.

Arrangements of pipes.

The pipes shall transfer a great amount of energy and the system must therefor be arranged with shortest possible distance between pump, valves and motors.

Avoid elbows if possible. The pipes should rather be bent.

Clamping.

The clamps shall prevent the pipes from vibrating and at the same time allow longitudinal movements. The clamps should be lined with plastic or rubber to prevent wearing of the pipes and reduce the noise level. It is normal practice to clamp the pipes at distances of 25-50 time outer diameter.

Longitudinal expansion.

Be aware of longitudinal expansion of pipes due to variation in temperature.

Pipe bends or hoses can be used for compensation of thermal expansion.

Noise.

Noise may occur in high-pressure hydraulic systems, but correct installation can reduce this substantially .

-The pump must have adequate supply of oil.

-Flexible suction line can be an advantage.

-The suction line must be absolute tight to prevent air coming into the oil.

-In some cases it can be necessary to install an accumulator on the compression side.

This will also reduce the vibrations from the pump.

-Hoses can be used in the system functioning as shock absorbers and elongation compensators.

There must be no metallic contact between pipes and clamps.

Flushing the system.

Prior to assembly of the main components it is recommended that the whole pipe system is flushed by means of a separate power unit.

The main components should be by-passed during the flushing. The flushing power pack should give an oil flow not less than the capacity of the hydraulic system. Duration of the flushing should be 4-8 hours, depending on quantities of joints and pipe lengths. During the flushing operation the filter must regularly be checked and possibly replaced. The grade of the filter must be as fine as on the filter to be used during operation.

The oil used for flushing shall be of the same type as that used under operation.

Pressure testing.

Pressure testing of the pipes must be achived prior to starting operating of the system.

Test pressure 1,5 x operating pressure.

NB!! Only the pipe system must be tested. Pumps, motors, cylinders and valves are not normally tested.

Nitrogen is recommended to be used as test gas.

4.7 Filling of hydraulic oil

Tank, pumps and motors must be filled with correct type of oil according to manufacture specifications.

Oil types.

For emergency systems of this type it is important that the hydraulic oil has a correct viscosity at all times and at all temperature conditions.

Hydraulic oil of good quality and high viscosity index is recommended.

Oil with viscosity grade 22-68 cSt at 40 °C, running 13-54 cSt, will assure a good result under normal temperature conditions.

The following table indicates the temperature extremes between which the viscosity grades can be used to remain within start-up and running viscosity range recommendations.

Viscosity 22 is recommended with ambient temperature from +5 to -10 °C

4.9 Starting the system.

Preparation for starting

After mounting, flushing and filling of oil the following 7 points have to be controlled:

2.

3.

4 .

5.

6.

7.

Starting.

The oil level in tank.

Circuit- and steering voltage.

Turning direction of pump and motor.

Over-pressure valves, throttle valves and mass control valves have to be completely open.

All valves in the suction line have to be open.

All pipe couplings have to be securely tightened.

The accumulators must be loaded.

The test run can start when all above 7 points are controlled and found in order.

The system shall be run at low pressure and aired carefully. Airing should start close to the pump and end at the driving gear. (motor, cylinder). The different components are then tested at low pressure.

Cylinders and motor shall be run several times in both directions. If everything is satisfactory, the system is slowly brought up to normal operating pressure. The pressure is increased by keeping the manoeuvring valve for cylinder in pas. "in" and at the same time tighten the safety valve. (at the inlet side of the manoeuvring valve.)

When the operating pressure has been reached, the pipeline must be checked for tightness. When all connections are found tight, all valves shall be set at correct pressure and oil level - see hydraulic diagram.

During starting period, the filter inner parts should be replaced after 10 hours of operation.

PARTV OPERATING AND CONTROL.

5.1 General

FUNCTION.

VESTDA VIT AS

Doc. No.: VDT - UMH - 8001

In stowed position the lifeboat is resting on the davit keel supports integrated on the davit and secured by means of lashings.

Embarkation of personnel is either in parked position on deck or in parked position along ships side at deck level. Launching of the lifeboat is done by swinging the davit from it's parked position to a position when the lifeboat is free of ships side and then lowered by means of the winch. This two-step operation gives the possibility to swing the davit backwards after lowering of the lifeboat after passing deck level to let the lifeboat rest along the ships side, for easy embarkation. No bowsing gear is required.

WINCH.

Launching and hoisting operations are by means of the winch. The winch is installed on the davit structure, and is delivered fully assembled and connected to the hydraulic power unit.

BACK-UP SYSTEM

All hydraulic functions have a backup system. Emergency launching is by means of accumulators for swing out, and a brake release pump for lowering. The brake release pump can be controlled from the lifeboat.

Emergency hoisting is by means of a manual hydraulic pump which can be connected to the system.

5.2 Starting

Before start check the following:

- Oil level in tank. Refill if necessary.

- All valves to be in correct position according to the hydraulic diagram.

- All valves in the suction line to be open.

- Release lashings.

- Start the Hydraulic Power Unit and circulate the oil.

- The pressure is increased by holding the manoeuvre valve in pos. 11 CYL. IN 11

When the operation pressure has been reached, do a visual check for leakage.

Damsgardsveien 143, N-5162 Laksevag, NORWAY Tel. : +47 55 54 92 00 E-mail: post@vestdavit.no http://www.vestdavit.no

5.3 Special notes regarding the winch.

Manoeuvring handle in hoisting position :

VESTDA VIT AS

Doc. No.: VDT - UMH - 8001

If the oil pressure in the steering line exceeds the release pressure the automatic brake opens.

The oil flows from hydraulic power unit to the manoeuvring valve and straight through the steering valve to winch motor and back to the tank.

Winch will hoist with desired speed.

Manoeuvring handle in stop (0-position):

When there is a main power unit, the return line in the manoeuvring valve is plugged, and there is no oil-flow through the valve in stop position.

The oil pressure from the power unit does not influence the pressure of the circuit in the winch.

5.4 Launching of boat

Operating the davit and winch.

Boat launching (boat in stowed position, resting on keel, wire tension relieved, lashings tighten up.)

1) Start power unit.

2) Tighten both wires by "light hoisting".

3) Lashings to be removed.

4) Boat to be hoisted clear of keel rest if necessary.

5) Davit to be swung out, boat to be lowered until embarking level reaches deck level, further swing out and lowering to sea level.

How far out the davit shall be moved, depends on weather conditions and the rolling of ship.

6) Boat to be unhooked.

7) When boat is clear of the ship, and subject to moderate sea conditions, the davit arm to be swung in until the wires are leaning against the ship side.

Do not operate the winch without load in hook.

Doc. No.: VDT - UMH - 8001

5.5 Hoisting of boat.

1) When the boat is connected to the hooks, hoist the boat quickly from top of a wave. If the boat starts swinging, the davit may be brought in to let the boat slide along the ships side.

2) Hoist the boat until reaching marked position.

3) Swing in the davit.

(Make sure that the boat is placed correct on keel supports)

4) The boat is now ready for lashing.

5) Stop power unit.

BOW VIEW I

1. Make sure that davit is completley outswung.

2. Connect boat to hooks.

3. Start hoisting boat by pressing winch handle in "hoist".
