About this file
This document is a Remedial Investigation Report for the Belgravia Site (Site ID 80000010) located at 125 Elkenburg Street in South Haven, Van Buren County, Michigan, prepared by Gannett Fleming for environmental remediation purposes under Michigan's Part 201 program. The investigation was conducted to characterize soil and groundwater contamination at the former industrial facility and to delineate the extent of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), metals, and cyanide present in multiple environmental media. The investigation included soil borings conducted via sonic drilling and direct push methods between March 2005 and May 2005, with depths ranging up to 87 feet. Multiple monitoring wells, recovery wells, and pilot study wells were installed to assess groundwater contamination in three distinct hydrogeologic units. Field screening activities included headspace analysis for VOCs, dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) testing using ultraviolet fluorescence and hydrophobic dye shake tests, and comprehensive laboratory analysis of soil, groundwater, sediment, and pore water samples. The report includes extensive analytical data tables documenting contamination concentrations across vadose zone soils, subsurface sediments, and groundwater, along with cross-sectional geological representations and contaminant distribution maps.
The investigation revealed significant contamination with TCE (trichloroethene) concentrations exceeding regulatory criteria in multiple locations, with the highest soil concentrations detected at boring locations SB-41 and SB-39, and groundwater contamination documented in both shallow and intermediate groundwater zones. Interim response activities were implemented including sump water ventilation systems, a DNAPL recovery system, and an interceptor trench system designed to contain and reduce contaminant migration. The report provides detailed hydrogeologic characterization, including hydraulic conductivity estimates derived from slug testing, groundwater elevation measurements across multiple sampling events from May through August 2005, and analysis of contaminant mobility and exposure pathways. Regulatory compliance was assessed against Michigan Part 201 Residential and Commercial I criteria for direct contact, groundwater contact protection, soil volatilization to indoor air inhalation, and Great Lakes protection standards. The investigation supports the development of a remedial action plan to address ongoing risks to public health and the environment from soil and groundwater contamination at the site.
