Exhibit Fabrication Services New River Gorge National Park and Preserve
Canyon Rim Visitor Center
1.0 PROJECT BACKGROUND
Located in southern West Virginia, New River Gorge National Park and Preserve (NERI) is a unique site of the National Park Service system. NERI encompasses over 70,000 acres of land along 53 miles of the New River from Bluestone Dam to Hawks Nest Lake. NERI is renowned for its excellent recreational opportunities: whitewater rafting, canoeing, hiking, rock climbing, fishing, hunting, bird watching, camping, picnicking, biking, and a place where one can enjoy the solitude of the natural world.
The Lower Gorge of the New River is a premier whitewater rafting location with imposing rapids ranging in difficulty from Class III to Class V, many of them obstructed by large boulders which necessitate maneuvering in very powerful currents, crosscurrents, and hydraulics. Commercial outfitters conduct trips down the river from April through October. The upper part of the river offers somewhat less challenging class I to III rapids for whitewater canoeing.
NERI Canyon Rim Visitor Center located in Lansing, WV receives an estimated 300,000 visitors each year and is located overlooking the New River Gorge Bridge. As the major hub of a 53-mile-long site, the Canyon Rim visitor center will house new, more visitor-centric exhibits. New exhibits highlight the many recreational options available for visitors.

3.7.2.2 Mock-ups and Prototypes
Mock-ups refer to working models that are fabricated simply, quickly, and at minimal cost in order to test a concept. They are full-scale representations of portions of an exhibit for the purpose of review, testing, and evaluation. Mock-ups are for review only and shall not be incorporated into the final exhibit.
Prototypes are more refined than mock-ups, and closer to the final product in material, fabrication, and operation. Prototypes are portions of an exhibit such as an artifact case or an interactive mechanism that has a particular need to be reviewed and tested prior to fabrication of more elements of the same design.
The contractor shall provide the following:
1. Mock-ups:
The contractor shall submit mock-ups to the COR for testing, review, and approval. Mock-ups that are approved, or approved with comments, shall be fabricated in final materials or finishes, and shall incorporate all corrections, changes, and modifications identified by the COR. Mock-ups that are found to be deficient, shall be revised and resubmitted for testing, review, and approval.
a. GL-03.00-000 Floor river graphic - The intent for this mock-up is to assess the transition where rigid graphic flooring material will meet with adjacent carpeting. The final installation needs to be such that there is no trip or safety hazards at that transition. Solutions may need to be designed to level the transition area to be seamless so that it is not a trip or safety hazard. An 18” by 18” section showing roughly equal amounts of rigid graphic flooring and carpeting is required. The sample of rigid graphic flooring shall depict the swatch area of graphic layout at 100% actual size.
The mock-up shall identify any methods added to obtain a smooth transition.
b. GL-03.01-900 prototype of connection to curved wall - The intent for this mock up is to assess the connection method where flat graphic panels stand-off from curved graphic exhibit walls behind them. The connections shall be as visually unobtrusive as possible and minimize the potential for fingers and hands to reach behind the stand-off panels. The connections shall be without any sharp or rough edges. Any paint or other finishes necessary to achieve this result shall be identified in the sample.
c. 04.01 Kayak Wall. 3-form section with attached graphic panel - The intent for this mock up is to show a section of curved wall substrate, attachment technique and finish for the 3-form water-like finish material, the finish technique for an exposed side, and the attachment method of a graphic panel. The mock-up shall be the width of the left vertical section (20”), and shall show a height of approximately 18”. The depth shall be sufficient to show the actual curve in the prototyped section. The attached graphic panel GL04.01-930 shall show the attachment method and stand-off depth, and any finish techniques such as edge paint or edge capture techniques.
d. 04.01 Climber Wall, Upper Section - The intent for this mock-up is to show a section of curved wall substrate, finishing techniques for the faux rock facing treatment and underside exposed planes, as well drawings to show attachment technique of the full-size mannequin climber figure. The drawings shall be clear in showing hardware and structural support so as to safely secure the figure to the faux rock formation. The mock-up shall be the height of one of the horizontal bands (12”), a section width of approximately 18” and a depth sufficient to show a section with the varying depth of the actual curve.
2. Prototypes:
Prior to the Preliminary Shop Inspection, the contractor shall provide the COR a report, with photo documentation, of the performance of the prototypes. All prototypes shall be available at the Preliminary Shop Inspection for review and testing.
All prototypes shall be corrected in accordance with the review and approval by the COR before being incorporated into the final exhibit.
a. GL-00.003-010 Silhouette of bird, exterior - The intent of this prototype is to see the final construction method, material, material finish, and actual installation/attachment method for the series of exterior building-mounted graphic silhouettes. If approved, this prototype may be used as part of the final installation.
b. CE-01.00-200 Exterior Topographic Map Cart - The intent of this prototype is to review the construction method and finishes for the supporting cart/table and portability and storage mechanisms required for this exterior topographic map.
Prototype shall be based upon detailed drawings, to be provided by fabricator and approved prior to construction of the prototype. Examples adequate support, portability and storage items include casters, wheel-locking mechanisms, collapsible/folding mechanisms. The prototype shall be weighted to represent final weight for purposes of transportability testing. The final topographic map element does not need to be installed in this prototype (see section 3.8.1.4) If prototype is approved, this prototype may be used for the completion of the final component.
c. CE 04.03-310 Coal Cart - This scenic element serves as an object display case. The intent of this prototype is to review materials and finish techniques, as well as construction and integration of artifact deck and acrylic vitrine for this scenic coal cart. Prior to either new construction or acquisition of an existing cart, the fabricator shall provide a written technical approach, defining intent to either build the cart as a new construction element, or, modify an existing, acquired coal cart. Upon approval of the technical approach, the fabricator shall submit detail drawings of the proposed cart. Drawings shall make clear the proposed materials and finish techniques for all elements, (examples include species of wood, aging techniques, metals – either real or simulated, wheels, visible iron work, and so forth.) Drawings shall make clear the integration of acrylic vitrine to the cart, securing techniques, and relationship of the vitrine to the object/artifacts deck. Construction shall not begin on the coal cart prototype until approval has been received on the detail drawings.
Pending approval of the coal cart prototype, the cart may be used as part of the final installation.
d. CE-04.02-400 Coal Interactive - The intent of this interactive is to show the effects of pressure over time that led to the formation of coal. Fabricator shall provide a written technical approach and detailed drawings for this mechanical visitor interactive. Drawings shall indicate all materials, finishes and mechanical approach.
Drawings shall illustrate features that will promote ease of use, durability, and wear items that will require replacement as a result of repeated use.
