Exhibits Summary A list of each exhibit in the exhibition with descriptions.
00.00 OUTDOOR EXHIBITS Wayfinding Signage
As visitors arrive at the site, they immediately become excited by the story as a dynamic scene unfolds on the front of the building. Silhouetted figures depict people rafting, fishing, bird watching, and climbing. Park identification on this wall also helps brand the site. Near the parking lot, new signage on the kiosk (provided by the park) and a three-sided bridge sign help visitors find their way through the park.
00.01 OUTDOOR KIOSK Orientation Panel
New graphics on the kiosk near the parking lot provide high-level information to visitors as they arrive at the site. Here, visitors may learn where they are, what they can do during their visit, and receive some interpretation on the story of the three parks. These panels will be provided by the park.
00.02 BRIDGE WAYFINDING SIGN Wayfinding Signage
A new three-sided structure provides wayfinding information along the pathway between the visitor center and the bridge overlook. One side directs visitors to the visitor center while the other two direct them to the bridge.
00.03 BUILDING FACADE MURAL Mural or Supergraphic
Along the large wall to the left of the entrance, a dynamic scene unfolds with silhouetted people rafting, fishing, bird watching, and rock climbing. Park identification also helps visitors understand that they are in a National Park.
01.00 WELCOME + ORIENTATION Exhibit Area
As guests enter the visitor center, they immediately confront a tactile floor plan of the space, assisting visitors who are blind or have low vision. A new structure to the left of the entrance incorporates the park’s brief video about the day’s information with a bulletin board. Just beyond this exhibit is a kiosk with a tactile park map and three dynamic graphics, each with a video, promoting what visitors can do in each of the three parks.
01.01 ENTRANCE Introduction Space
Within the entrance vestibule, visitors can explore a tactile floor plan of the building to better understand the layout and where to go for information or exhibits. This map is also useful for visitors who are blind or have low vision.

Exhibits Summary, Page 2
01.02 THREE PARKS ORIENTATION Orientation Panel
A dynamic exhibit located on the wall between the two theater doors incorporates exciting graphics and videos of each of the three parks with a tactile map of the entire area. Here, visitors can explore the map and learn more about the opportunities and activities at each location.
An explore panel in this area provides an introduction to this thread throughout the exhibits. Visitors are prompted to search for these panels in the visitor center to learn more about locations in the park related to the stories.
02.00 PARK DESK Introduction Space
A revised front desk incorporates acoustic panels for sound mitigation and improved signage for visitors. A series of overhead panels feature images of the sky and birds while a new welcome sign and arrowhead help visitors identify the desk. All of these panels incorporate acoustic materials to help dampen sound for the rangers.
03.00 BACK WINDOW ROOM Exhibit Area
Exhibits located in the back of the visitor center include a large floor graphic "flowing" from the window to a dynamic sculpture of a kayaker on the wall leading into the exhibits. An exhibit section, titled "What Makes This Place Special?," discusses the history of the parks and the importance of the connected watershed. Exhibits for the New River and the bridge also interpret what visitors can see outside the windows.
The back space remains largely open to accommodate large groups, when needed, and includes storage for vending machine items and program equipment. A changing display on the wall behind the desk provides flexible display space for the park. Seating also creates a contemplative area near the windows.
03.01 WHAT MAKES THIS PLACE SPECIAL? Exhibit Area
This exhibit section discusses the history of the three parks, NPS' role at NERI, and the importance of the watershed. A new structure along the wall behind the desk houses these exhibits, as well as ample storage. Visitors can also stamp their passport or discover a changing exhibit space.
03.02 BRIDGE EXHIBIT Main Topic
A reader rail and explore panel in front of the windows overlooking the bridge provide interpretation. Visitors will learn about it's function and history.
Exhibits Summary, Page 3
04.00 EXHIBIT ROOM Exhibit Area
Within the exhibit room, a large mural of the gorge on the back wall, tall structures climbing the walls, and projection on the floor simulating flowing water all evoke the sense of owe and enormity of New River Gorge. Visitors are immediately immersed in the story of the gorge as they browse topics including geology, history, biodiversity, climate change, and stewardship. Each exhibit section includes dynamic mural images and tactile and mechanical interactives.
04.01 WHAT CAN I DO HERE? Main Topic
As visitors proceed to the back of the visitor center, a dynamic scene of a kayaker emerges from the wall between the exhibit entrance doors. This scene not only shows the proper safety equipment and a key activity at the park, but immediately identifies this space as the exhibit room and draws people to the back. When visitors enter the exhibits, a scene on the back of this wall shows a girl fishing in the river while a climber hangs overhead. The goal of this section is to answer the question: "What Can I Do Here?" Several "Explore" panels in this area direct visitors to key locations in the parks related to these activities.
04.02 WHAT SHAPED THE GORGE? Main Topic
On the immediate left side of the exhibit room is the "What Shaped the Gorge?"
section. Here, visitors learn about the geologic past of this region and the forces, both human and natural, that shaped New River Gorge and the New River over time. A large timeline running up the tall wall shows key events in the geologic story. Overhead, a silhouetted prehistoric tree on the wall clues visitors in to the depth of time discussed here. Two interactives interpret geologic change and coal formation.
04.03 WHAT BROUGHT PEOPLE HERE? Main Topic
The next exhibit section, "What Brought People Here?," interprets the rich industry and cultural history of the region. Visitors encounter a scenic mine cart with historic artifacts and a scenic mine embedded in the wall. A tactile image depicts the steps of the mining process, while an oral history station enables visitors to hear firsthand accounts from people. Near the back wall, a small window reveals model trains passing by. Each of the three trains represents a different time period of locomotion in the gorge (steam, diesel, and electric).
Finally, explore panels get people out into the park.
Exhibits Summary, Page 4
04.04 WHAT LIVES HERE? Main Topic
On the opposite wall, visitors learn "What Lives Here?" This section interprets the rich biodiversity at New River Gorge and what led to the diverse speciation.
A long rail includes several pushbuttons paired with interpretive text for photos on the wall. Visitors press the button to identify the image that pairs with the text. Various factoids and statistics throughout the mural provide interesting information on the variety of species found in New River Gorge.
04.05 WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? Main Topic
Near the opposite entrance to the exhibits, visitors encounter the "What Happens Next?" section. Here, visitors learn more about the future of the gorge, how they can help protect this place, and how climate change impacts the gorge. Several explore panels in this area get visitors into the park and an interactive enables them to dive deeper into the story.

CE-04.05-200 Forest Resiliency Interactive
This interactive encourages visitors to alter biodiversity in a forest to better understand how human activities and external factors impact critical components and destabilize ecosystems. As visitors rotate the cubes, they encounter negative actions (pollution, climate change, oil spill, erosion) that cause the lights at the top to approach "unstable" as more are added to the board. Rotating the cubes such that all reveal positive elements of biodiversity (birds, trees, clean air, bats, benthics) results in a healthy forest. Visitors can manipulate the cubes as they wish and watch the lights vacillate between healthy and unstable, reinforcing the importance of a diverse, resilient forest.
