2Contents, Purpose, and Summary
PURPOSE AND CONTENTS
The plans, illustrations, and detailed drawings in this package are intended to elicit final feedback from park staff and key stakeholders on the designs and detailed drawings. To move the design forward to the Production Documents 2 phase, reviewers should focus on any final details, including image selections, interactive elements, and label copy.
Following review of these materials, we will proceed with the final design phase, Production Documents 2, which finalizes details for every element and results in a fabrication-ready package. We invite your close attention to these materials as we exit the design phase of the project.
This Production Documents I package includes:
• Updated graphics, color, materials, and typography.
• A floor plan with scenes and content groups identified. This plan illustrates where specific content will be addressed throughout the space and show the approximate layout of conceptual exhibit systems. Considerations of visitor flow and accessibility requirements have influenced, and are noted in, this floor plan.
• Representative visualizations of each exhibit area.
• Elevations that depict how components work together in a given content group to tell specific stories within a space.
• Design details.
Also included with this submittal, under separate cover:
• Text Level III Script
• Graphics Package
• Content Reports
• AV Treatments Package
• Custom Elements Reference Package
• Draft Use-Rights Documentation Package
• A disposition of client comments and contractor responses on Design Development I Comprehensive
• Class A Production Estimate and life-cycle cost estimates.

NEXT STEPS
Following the presentation of this package on March 15, 2021, the client team will provide a consolidated, collated review of these materials. During the final phase—Production Documents 2—we will finalize the content, prepare graphic layouts for production, and create the bid-ready materials.
During the presentation and the review period, please consider:
• Have we successfully updated the design to meet your concerns?
• Please consider the final selection of objects and images.
• Are the interactive exhibits meeting desired goals?
• Do the designs appropriately address the parameters outlined in the SOW?
The NPS team is scheduled to evaluate all deliverables and provide its consolidated comments by April 7, 2021. A conference call will follow within one week of receipt of comments. The Design Minds will then begin work on the PD2 deliverable, scheduled for May 19, 2021.
INTERPRETIVE THEMES
• Geology: The New River and its tributaries, together with the forces of geological processes, sculpted the gorge and reshaped the physical and cultural landscape and continues to do so today.
• Biodiversity: Unfragmented forests, complex geological features, pristine air quality and night skies, and free-flowing river waters support a great diversity of flora and fauna.
• History: The landscape surrounding New River Gorge tells the tale of people (historic and prehistoric) that called this place home and developed innovative ways of using the land and provides a glimpse into the deep geologic past of a land now protected as a national park to be enjoyed and preserved for future generations.
• Recreation: The rugged, undeveloped, scenic, and wild character of the landscape provides park users with exceptional recreational opportunities such as hunting, fishing, trapping, whitewater boating, rock climbing, hiking, camping, and bicycling.

3Exhibit NarrativeScale = N.A.
Interior Exhibits The New River facilitates diverse life, adventurous activities, innovative industries, and awe-inspiring geology. The new exhibits blend the dynamic river with sections that answer common visitor questions about the park. The exhibits aim to assist visitors from the moment they walk in the front door by asking and answering key questions. In doing so, we encourage guests to explore key locations in the park.
As guests enter the visitor center, they first encounter a tactile floor plan of the layout to help them understand where to go. This also assists visitors who are blind or have low vision. Once inside, visitors discover a new structure that incorporates the park’s brief video about the day’s information with a bulletin board.
A dynamic exhibit located on the wall between the two theater doors incorporates exciting graphics and videos of each of the three parks with a tactile map of the entire area. Here, visitors can explore the map and learn more about the opportunities and activities at each location. A panel also introduces visitors to the Explore New River Gorge panels that are located throughout the visitor center.
Visitors continue to the front desk, where new overhead panels feature images of the sky and birds and help mitigate sound. Acoustic panels on the back wall better identify the area and welcome them to the park.
Exhibits located in the back of the visitor center provide an overview of the parks and how each is connected through the watershed by asking
“What Makes This Place Special.” This new exhibit on the wall behind the desk incorporates ample storage for park staff as well as a changeable picture rail and display cases. Two reader rails in front of the window overlooking the bridge interprets its history and the scenic drive.
The main interpretive exhibits are located in the current exhibit room. A dynamic scene of a kayaker emerges from the wall, pulling visitors into the space. Within the room, large walls rise up on either side of the doorways, creating a dynamic, engaging, and visually interesting gorge. Along each side, exhibits blend various types of exhibit media to bring the space to life. Lighting effects on the floor evoke the New River flowing through the canyon. The back wall of the room features a large image of the gorge, tying the space together.
As visitors flow around the room, sections on the natural landscape, the historic landscape, plants and animals, industry, and recreation tell the key stories through graphic panels, large dynamic images, tactile and mechanical interactives, artifact cases, and audiovisual experiences. Each of the exhibit sections answers a common visitor question: “What Can I Do Here?,” “What Shaped the Gorge?,” “What Brought People Here?,” “What Lives Here?,” and “What Happens Next?” Throughout the exhibits and the visitor center, an “Explore New River Gorge” interpretive thread will tie each story or section to a location in the park.
At the back of the main space, visitors can rest and enjoy a great view of New River Gorge. Two benches in this space support a contemplative area that captures the magic of the New River.
Exterior Exhibits As visitors arrive at the site, they immediately become excited by the story as a dynamic scene unfolds on the front of the building.
Silhouetted figures depict people rafting, fishing, birdwatching, and climbing. Park identification on this wall also helps brand the site.
Near the parking lot, a three-sided bridge sign helps visitors find their way through the park.

Upright Tri-Side Series Overview (UPTR)
Upright structures can be configured in a tri-sided arrangement. The Tri-Sided Series can support exhibit panels, bulletin cases and other accessories. The Upright Tri Series, like all NPS hardware, is typically embedded directly into the ground, although other mounting methods are available to accommodate site conditions. The Tri-Sided Series is available in weathering or galvanized steel, or in painted aluminum.

VIS Hardware Base Material Options
Overview
Weathering steel is an excellent material option for many NPS sites. Over time, with exposure to the elements, the bases turn a golden brown.
The bases are virtually mainternance free and do not require painting once installed.
Weathering steel bases can last well over 15 years.
Bases shipped are not pre weathered. When they arrive the bases are black and begin the weathering process when exposed to the elements.
Aluminum bases are a good all around choice for many NPS sites. Aluminum bases are primed and painted.
The bases are not maintenance free and do require occasional field cleaning and touch up to keep them looking good.
Aluminum bases are available in three standard paint colors.
All bases are painted with a coarse spatter coat finish for added durability.
Galvanized steel is an excellent choice for saltwater and other marine sites. Prior to final fabrication the base legs and frame are hot dipped galvanized which imparts a protective finish to the steel.
The bases are virtually mainternance free, show little if any sign of rust inhibition, and do not require painting once installed.
Galvanized steel bases can last well over 15 years.
When they arrive the bases have a shiny silver finish. Over time the bases patina to a dull grey.

Spot lighting to be pointed at areas of graphic text, interactive rails, and objects. Wall washes to throw lighting on wall murals. During installation, green and yellow gels may be cut to enhance landscape imagery and some dappled lighting screens should be included to add texture and depth.
The gobo projectors should be arranged to cover the open area of the central space in the 04 exhibit room. Avoiding the mining cart and hitting the kayak bench. This is meant to create an atmosphere of flowing water within the themed canyon walls.
