Despite its name, the New River is one of the oldest rivers in North America. Its waters carved the gorge and support abundant plant and animal species. Experience dramatic views here and at Grandview, explore waterfalls at Sandstone Falls, or search for river access icons on your park map to access the water directly.

America’s National Parks
What
These are your parks. Congress authorized New River Gorge National Park and Preserve in 1978, followed by Gauley River National Recreation Area and Bluestone National Scenic River in 1988. The National Park Service protects over 90,000 acres of land in these three parks through preservation, research, and education.
How will you help protect it?
Makes This Place Special?
Our
The New, Gauley, and Bluestone Rivers are all connected. Their waters support the diverse Southern Appalachian ecosystem, home to a rich variety of plants and animals. How we treat our rivers at any point in the system impacts millions of insects, plants, animals— and humans. This is not only important regionally, but for the entire country.
Connected Waterways
This Place Special?
Camp at New River and immerse yourself in the park. Campsites throughout the park provide easy access to the river. Always wear a lifejacket when near the water.
Explore the river by boat or paddleboard.
Experience the serenity of a quiet pool or the thrill of a Class III+ rapid.
As water flows through streams, creeks, and waterfalls, it picks up pollutants.
Responsible stewardship of the land can support the stability of the ecosystem we depend on for survival.
What Makes
Hike through peaceful forests to discover historic scenery and breathtaking views. Trails range in length and vary in difficulty from flat, smooth paths to steep, challenging terrain. Grab a trail’s map before you go.
New River Gorge is home to some of the best mountain biking trails in the region. Riders can choose from a variety of distances and terrain.
The rich cultural history of this region began when the first people arrived here 14,000 years ago. Archeological sites, historic farmsteads, and once booming industrial towns offer a glimpse into New River Gorge’s past.
Photographers, birdwatchers, hikers, boaters, and climbers throughout the parks all marvel at the awe-inspiring views of New River Gorge.

What
These are your parks. Congress authorized New River Gorge National Park and Preserve in 1978, followed by Gauley River National Recreation Area and Bluestone National Scenic River in 1988. The National Park Service protects over 90,000 acres of land in these three parks through preservation, research, and education.
How will you help protect it?

Our
The New, Gauley, and Bluestone Rivers are all connected. Their waters support the diverse Southern Appalachian ecosystem, home to a rich variety of plants and animals. How we treat our rivers at any point in the system impacts millions of insects, plants, animals— and humans. This is not only important in the park.

Crews completed New River Gorge Bridge on October 22, 1977. The bridge reduced the 40-minute drive down the narrow mountain roads of the gorge to less than one minute. Towering 876 feet above the New River, it is one of the highest bridges in the United States —and the longest single-span arch bridge in the western hemisphere.
Spanning the Gorge
Although the bridge may look old, its rusted appearance is intentional. The “COR-TEN B” steel rusts over time to prevent the need for painting and to increase its resistance to corrosion.
