About this file
This document is GSA guidance on compliance with Military Standard 129 (Mil-Std-129R) marking and shipping label requirements for vendor partners. The guidance provides an overview of marking requirements for unit packs, intermediate containers, and exterior containers, emphasizing that vendors are responsible for ensuring full compliance with the most current version of Mil-Std-129R, as this guidance document is not all-inclusive.
Unit, intermediate, and exterior containers must include specific identification text markings such as barcoded NSN with hyphens, NSN with cage code, part number, nomenclature, quantity and unit of issue, contract or purchase order number, batch/lot number, shelf-life marking, TCN number if available, and serial number(s). Exterior containers require the same basic label format as unit containers but without item description and must additionally include barcoded NSN, purchase order number, and CAGE code. The document specifies that if both contract and purchase order numbers cannot fit on a label, the purchase order number takes precedence. Military Shipping Labels (MSLs) are required for all military shipments and must contain 18 specific data elements including Transportation Control Number (TCN), Transportation Account Code (TAC)/Postage, consignor and consignee information, service type, priority, port of debarkation, project code, weight, cube, piece number, and 2D (PDF417) bar code. Linear (Code 39) bar codes are optional when 2D bar codes include identification data. Bar code marking requirements vary by container type, with exterior containers and palletized unit loads requiring NSN, contract/order number, CAGE code, and Contract Line Item Number (CLIN). The document includes detailed figures illustrating proper label placement on containers and examples of compliant MSL formats, along with supplemental requirements for hazardous materials, packaging standards, wood packaging material treatment for export, PRIME items, Safety Data Sheets, and formaldehyde emission standards for composite wood products.
