About this file
This addendum to a geotechnical engineering report provides the results of a global stability analysis for a landslide remediation project on Puerto Rico Highway 568 at kilometer 25.8 in Corozal, Puerto Rico. The analysis considered static conditions with and without water, as well as seismic conditions of 0.38g acceleration. Reinforcement using pile walls was shown to increase the factor of safety from below 1 to above 1 under static and seismic conditions.
The related federal contract opportunity is a solicitation from the Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration for landslide repairs on roads in Ciales, Corozal, and Orocovis, Puerto Rico. The project consists of embankment reconstruction, reinforced soil slope systems, retaining walls, drainage systems, pavement work, guardrails, signage, and traffic control on Puerto Rico Highways 5568, 568, 157, 155, and 156. The multiple work schedules are expected to cost between $10-20 million. Bids are due from certified small businesses by the date specified on the SF1442 solicitation form. Annual representations and certifications must be completed on SAM.gov.

ADDENDUM NUMBER ONE
TO
GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING REPORT
LANDSLIDE REMEDIATION
PR-568 KILOMETER 25.8
Corozal, Puerto Rico
Report dated January 10, 2019
Addendum date March 13, 2019
The Puerto Rico Highway Authority requested that a global stability analysis be submitted for the previous report. Many more borings and laboratory tests would be required to perform a realistic analysis. However, I have included an analysis based on assumed data for the solution that was adopted to comply with the requirement. These results, for static and seismic conditions, are attached.
The factor of safety for the existing slope without water was backfigured to about 1.1, probably near what now exists. Then water was added to lower the factor of safety to just below one (1). The proposed reinforcement was added, so that the safety factor increased to 2.3. Then, the reinforced slope was subjected to a seismic shock of 0.38g, approximately the expected acceleration with a 1/1000

PR-568 kilometer 25.8 Addendum to Geotechnical Report year recurrence interval. In that case the safety factor is near one, indicating minimal displacements for the assumed geometry. This last case is quite unlikely since it assumes a high water table and a seismic shock.
The ability of the proposed slope reinforcement to increase the slope safety factor is thus confirmed.
