(i) CONTROL STATION SELECTION

1) With the control selector switch (Item 13) on the local steering gear starter and control box switched to position, 'OFF', control functions are not available.

2) With the control selector switch (Item 13) on the local steering gear starter and control box switched to position, 'LOCAL' control is available at this box only. This is confirmed by the illumination ofthe 'STARTER PANEL CONTROL' lamp (Item l 0) on this box and on the remote Bridge Control panel.

3) By switching the control selector switch (Item 1 0) on the steering gear starter and control box from 'LOCAL' to 'REMOTE', control is offered to the remote station. This is indicated to an operator at this station by the flashing of the 'TAKE OVER ON SERVICE' illuminated pushbutton (Item 9) on each of the panels. As long as this illuminated pushbutton continues to flash, control is maintained at the steering gear starter and control box.

4) To take control on this remote panel, the 'TAKE OVER ON SERVICE' illuminated pushbutton (Item 9) has to be pressed. This will then change the state of the illuminated pushbutton from flashing to that of steady illumination. The 'BRIDGE MASTER CONTROL' location light on all panels will be also illuminated.

5) Control can be taken back to the steering gear starter and control box at any time, simply by switching the selector switch (Item 13) from the 'REMOTE' position to the 'LOCAL' position.

6) To enable the ship's "JOYSTICK SYSTEM" to take control of the thruster, control mustbe at the Bridge control panel. Upon selection of the thruster by the JOYSTICK SYSTEM control panel, the appropriate control location light on all panels will be illuminated.

FR\772

PP991C88

LITHO IN USA

SECTIONTHREE PAGE 16

NOTE:

CONTROL CAN ONLY BE TAKEN AWAY TO THE REMOTE

BRIDGE CONTROL PANEL FROM THE SHIP'S JOYSTICK

SYSTEM BY SWITCHING OUT FROM THE JOYSTICK

SYSTEM CONTROL PANEL.

CONTROL CAN BE TAKEN BY THE LOCAL STEERING

MOTOR STARTER AND CONTROL BOX BY SWITCHING

CONTROL SELECTOR SWITCH (ITEM 17) TO "LOCAL".

(ii) ALARMS

1) Any alarms that occur will cause an audible and visual warning on both of the control stations. This is in the form of a horn for the audible alarm and a flashing lamp for the alarm. The appropriate alarm lamp will flash at both control stations, however, ifthe selector switch (Item 13) is in the 'LOCAL' position, the audible alarm will only sound at the steering gear starter and control box if the selector switch (Item 13) is in the 'LOCAL' position. If selector switch is in 'REMOTE' position, audible alarm will sound at the remote bridge station. Both the audible and visual alarms will continue until the alarm has been acknowledged by the operator.

2) Acknowledgement of the alarm can only be done at the station that has control, although the control position can be changed so as to accept control and acknowledge the alarm. It is achieved by pressing the 'ALARM ACCEPT' pushbutton (Item 8) which silences the audible alarm and changes the state of the visual alarm from flashing to that of steady illumination.

3) Action is now required to rectify the problem that has illuminated the visual alarm lamp(s). Once the problem has been discovered and rectified, the alarm system then needs to be reset to clear the visual warning(s) .

4) This can only be achieved at the steering gear starter and control box and only when it is in control. Thus, by switching the selector switch (Item

13) back to LOCAL and then by pressing the ALARM RESET pushbutton (Item 9), the alarm system will reset, extinguishing the visual alarm lamp(s) . However, they will not extinguish if fault prevails.

5) Shutdown of the thrust motor is incorporated if the thruster lubrication oil pressure drops to a level that causes the 'THRUST BEARING LOW LOW OIL PRESSURE' alarm (Item 4) to occur. The 'THRUST BEARING LOW OIL PRESSURE' alarm (Item 3) gives early warning of the problem.

PP991C88

LITHO IN USA

SECTION THREE PAGE 17

SPECIAL NOTE

If the LOW or the LOW LOW oil pressure alarms have been actuated, the procedure for resetting these alarms is as follows :-

Check that the fault has been cleared, then start the main drive motor (see section V). Once the start-up procedure has been completed then the alarm reset pushbutton (Item 9) can be pressed.

(iii) THRUST DIRECTION CONTROL

FR\772

1) On the remote Bridge Control panel, thrust directional signals are given to the bow thruster by an operator rotating the 360° control head to the direction in which the vessel's bow is required to move. An integral potentiometer on the control head gives a proportional signal equal to the required azimuth angle of the bow thruster. By comparing this signal with a signal generated by a discharge deflector positional feedback transmitter on the thruster steering shaft, the P.L.C. unit within the starter and control box releases the steering gear brake, and starts the steering gear motor, rotating the thruster discharge deflector, in the correct direction, to the required azimuth angle.

As the required discharge deflector azimuth setting is reached, the positional feedback transmitter output matches that output from the discharge deflector's control head setting. The P.L.C. unit senses this equalisation, stopping rotation of the steering gear motor and setting the motor brake to hold the discharge deflector in the required position.

Confirmation that the thrust direction demand has been followed is given through the illumination ofthe 'AZIMUTH IN LINE' light (Item 11).

2) On the local steering motor starter and control box, thrust direction control is achieved through the operation of the 'CLOCKWISE' and 'COUNTER-CLOCKWISE' rotation pushbuttons (Items 19 and 20).

These cause the deflector plate to turn in the required direction. The actual direction feedback is shown on the 'THRUST DIRECTION INDICATOR' (Item 14). Thus, the 'CLOCKWISE' or 'COUNTER CLOCKWISE' pushbuttons are held down until the 'THRUST DIRECTION INDICA TOR' indicates the direction in which the vessel's bow will move. These pushbuttons only operate when cubicle is in LOCAL control.

FR\772

PP991C88

LITHO IN USA

SECTION THREE PAGE 18

(iv) THRUST MAGNITUDE CONTROL

l) On the remote Bridge Control panel thrust magnitude (main drive motor rpm) is set by a speed setting level on the top of the control head. The speed setting range and equivalent percentages of maximum thrust are engraved on the top of the control head, with a pointer mounted off the control lever showing the set thrust magnitude position. The control lever directly drives a integral potentiometer on the control head which provides a speed setting signal to the main drive motor controller, via the P .L.C. unit within the starter control box.

THRUST MAGNITUDE %

100% 90% 75% 50% 25% 0%

MAIN DRIVE/MOTOR RPM

An actual speed output return from the main drive motor controller drives a thrust magnitude indicator/tachometer (Item l 0) on the control panel, showing that the main drive motor has responded to the set thrust magnitude/rpm position of the lever. The speed setting lever on the control head is limited in operation by an adjustable end stop.

2) On the local steering motor starter and control box, control is achieved through the operation of the 'INCREASE THRUST' and 'DECREASE THRUST' pushbuttons (Item 22 and 23). The actual speed feedback is shown on the 'THRUST MAGNITUDE INDICA TOR' (Item 18). Thus, the pushbuttons are held down until the required thrust magnitude setting is achieved on the 'THRUST MAGNITUDE INDICATOR'. these pushbuttons only operate when cubicle is in LOCAL control.

3) At the remote Bridge Control panel, any thrust magnitude demand signals attempted on the control head are ignored until a) the main drive motor has been started, and b) the 'THRUSTER READY FOR SERVICE' pushbutton (Item 13) has been pressed on the panel. Only after this has been done will the thruster main drive motor respond to thrust magnitude demand signals from the control head.

PP 991C 88

LITHO IN USA

SECTION THREE PAGE 19

(v) START SEQUENCE AT BOTH CONTROL LOCATIONS

1) First, control has to be taken at the required station. This has been outlined in part 1.

2) The operator should then check that no alarms are present on the control panel and any motor control panel. Thus, all alarm lamps and illuminated pushbuttons should be extinguished.

3) The 'STOP' illuminated pushbutton on the panel should currently be illuminated indicating the stopped status of the thruster.

4) The 'START' illuminated pushbutton on the panel can now be pressed, initiating the start sequence. This is confirmed to the operator by flashing of the 'START' illuminated pushbutton. It also extinguishes the 'STOP' illuminated pushbutton, indicating that the thruster is no longer in the stopped mode.

5) If no shutdown alarms occur and the thrust motor cabinet is ready, then the start sequence is completed. This is confirmed by the 'START' illuminated pushbutton changing state from flashing to that of steady illumination.

6) The 'THRUSTER READY FOR SERVICE' illuminated pushbutton (Item

14) on the panel then starts to flash informing the operator that the thruster is ready for operation. This can now be pressed giving the operator full control as outlined in part 6. By pressing the 'THRUSTER READY FOR SERVICE' illuminated pushbutton, the illumination becomes steady confirming the system's readiness.

7) Once selected, the 'THRUSTER READY FOR SERVICE' illuminated pushbutton should only be extinguished when a) the thruster is stopped either normally or in emergency or b) if the main drive motor has a fault and the ready signal is lost from the main drive also causing a shutdown.

1) The 'START' illuminated pushbutton on the panel should currently be illuminated indicating the running status of the thruster.

2) The 'STOP' illuminated pushbutton on the panel can then be pressed initiating a normal shutdown. This is confirmed by extinguishing the 'START' illuminated pushbutton and causing the 'STOP' illuminated pushbutton to start flashing. At the same time, the 'THRUSTER READY FOR SERVICE' illuminated pushbutton will also be extinguished.

3) Once the stop sequence has been completed, the 'STOP' illuminated pushbutton will cease to flash and will become steady.

(vii) EMERGENCY STOP SEQUENCE AT BOTH LOCATIONS

1) The 'EMERGENCY STOP' illuminated pushbutton (Item 33) can be pressed at any time in this location. Once pressed, it latches in and can they only be detached from that position.

2) Once an emergency stop has been initiated, it cannot be prevented.

3) Confirmation of an emergency stop as having been initiated is provided by the immediate illumination of the 'EMERGENCY STOP' illuminated pushbutton (Item 19).

4) In addition, the 'STOP' illuminated pushbutton (Item 20) is also illuminated in steady state, confirming the stopped status of the thruster.

OTHER CONTROL FUNCTIONS AT STEERING MOTOR STARTER AND

CONTROL CUBICLE

(viii) THRUSTER LUBRICATION PUMP SELECTION

1) Start of the thruster main drive will also start the electric motor driven thruster lubrication oil pump.

3) If pump fails or there is a loss of pressure in lub. oil circuit, loss of pressure will activate first stage lub. oil pressure alarm and subsequent second stage shutdown of main drive motor.

(ix) ZERO THRUST (CONTINUOUS ROTATION) FACILITY

(x)

1) This is selected and deselected by pressing the 'CONTINUOUS ROT A TION' illuminated pushbutton (Item 15). This can only be achieved once the THRUSTER READY FOR SERVICE illuminated pushbutton (Item 13) has been selected.

2) Upon selection of this option, the illuminated pushbutton has a steady illumination confirming the selection. This is extinguished when the function is deselected.

3) The CONTINUOUS ROTATION function is also deselected if the station that is in control is changed or ifthe main drive 'STOP' pushbutton (Item 19) is operated. In either case, CONTINUOUS ROTATION will have to be reselected.

4) The zero thrust facility is provided by rotating the deflector plate continuously in the anti-clockwise direction at 6 rpm.

ALIGNMENT CHECK

1) This illuminated pushbutton (Item 25 on the thruster steering gear starter and control box) is pressed and latched in to check the thrust alignment.

2) The deflector can then be turned by means of the pushbuttons until the illuminated pushbutton comes on. When this occurs, the thrust direction can be read from the 'THRUST DIRECTION' indicator. This reading should be zero degrees. For full details, refer to SECTION ONE, Initial Alignment.

(xi) HEATER ON

This lamp (Item 24 on the thruster steering gear starter and control box) simply provides visual confirmation that the heaters has been switched on by means of the heater selector switch (item 29).

(xii) CONTROL POWER ON

This lamp (Item 32) provides visual confirmation to the operator that control power is available.
