Bl GENERAL TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION

(i) BAUER ELECTRIC STEERING GEAR MOTOR AND BRAKE
The thruster is fitted with an electric steering gear, comprising a reversible AC electric motor, coupled to the thruster deflector steering shaft through a motor mounted, high reduction, beveVhelical, right angle gearbox and pin type coupling.
Manual control of the thrust direction (deflector steering) is possible from the thruster room mounted starter and control box or from the remote Bridge Control panel position located in the Wheelhouse. The position selection is effected by a control position selector switch on the starter and control box.
An appropriate signal from either of these positions, or from an input signal from the ship's joystick or future dynamic positioning system, will, through the steering motor start contactors in the starter and control box, rotate the steering motor clockwise or counterclockwise and so turn the thruster deflector in the desired direction.
When the required direction of vessel movement is reached, ( 180° opposite to the direction of the jet output from the thruster), release of the motor turning signal will stop rotation of the motor and lock the thruster deflector shaft into position, by means of an electromagnetic disc brake unit mounted to the free end of the steering motor rotor shaft.
Mounted also to the end casing of the motor is an integral electric motor driven fan unit, for force cooling of the steering motor during periods of heavy duty. The motor driven fan is powered directly from the starter and control box and is running constantly whenever the thruster is activated.
The thrust direction indicated and feedback to the control positions is provided by a transmitter assembly mounted to the top of the steering motor. The two transmitters providing the direction indication are directly coupled by means of a gear train to the steering gear motor output shaft/thruster steering shaft.
For full technical details regarding the steering gear motor, refer to the relevant following Sections B3, B4 and B5 and the STEERING GEAR MOTOR INSTRUCTION MANUAL in Section B9.

B2 STEERING GEAR MOTOR INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
FR\771
Examine the steering gear unit and pedestal for any mechanical damage, prior to installation on the thruster.
After ensuring that the machined surfaces on the thruster mounting bracket and steering motor pedestal are cleaned of applied anti-corrosion agent, the steering motor unit can be mounted on the bracket, aligned in accordance with the Elliott project drawing 4639 WG included in manual SECTION ONE and drawing 4640 WG in this section.
The steering motor assembly should be bolted down to the thruster mounting bracket, after aligning the pin type coupling fitted between the thruster steering shaft and the steering motor output shaft. The two halves of this coupling, type Wellman Eflex FPB, size 240/Fl2, can be simply aligned by placing a straight edge across the two halves of the coupling.
After the steering motor assembly has been bolted down and all components electrically connected, the steering gear mounted thrust direction indicating equipment should be aligned, as detailed in SECTION ONE, heading AS (v) .
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO START MOTOR UNDER POWER UNTIL ALL
NATIONAL AND LOCAL REGULATIONS REGARDING CONNECTION,
INSULATION TESTING AND GROUNDING OF ELECTRIC MOTORS HAVE
BEEN COMPLIED WITH.

B6 STEERING CONTROLS MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS
FR\771
WARNING
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO START ANY MAINTENANCE WORK ON ANY
ELECTRICAL COMPONENT OF THE STEERING GEAR AND THRUSTER
ANCILLARIES UNTIL THE THRUSTER HAS BEEN LOCKED OUT FROM
REMOTE STARTING AND CONTROL, THE REQUIRED COMPONENT HAS
BEEN ISOLATED FROM THE POWER SUPPLY AND ALL NATIONAL AND
LOCAL REGULATIONS REGARDING WORK ON HIGH VOLTAGE
ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS HAVE BEEN COMPLIED WITH.
(i) STEERING GEAR MOTOR
The steering gear motor is fitted with "sealed for life" grease lubricated bearings and does not require further maintenance. The motor should be kept clean, with all terminal box covers in place and all cable connections tight. Should the motor require electrical repair or the motor end seals begin to leak, the motor must be split away from its gearbox and cleaned and re-greased in accordance with the instructions given in heading 6.2 of the STEERING MOTOR INSTRUCTION
MANUAL KD-CFG88 DEF.
(ii) STEERING GEAR HIGH REDUCTION RIGHT ANGLE GEARBOX
The steering gear right angle gearbox was supplied with its initial fill of 12 litres of VG 220 extreme pressure (AGMA 5EP) gear oil. The level of oil in this gearbox should be checked at not more than six monthly intervals, with the oil being changed after approximately 10,000 operating hours or three years, whichever is the sooner. The gearbox should be inspected and oil changed in accordance with the instructions given in heading 6.1 ofthe STEERING MOTOR INSTRUCTION
MANUAL KD-CFG88 DEF.
(iii) STEERING GEAR MOTOR BRAKE
For reliable operation, particularly where the brake is being used on a high frequency basis, of more than sixty braking operations per hour, it is essential that the brake unit be inspected and overhauled regularly, at not more than six monthly intervals. Regular inspection of the brake unit will give prior indication of the necessity of replacing the friction plates. The inspection and friction plate replacement should be carried out in accordance with the instructions given in heading 11 ofthe STEERING MOTOR BRAKE UNIT DETAILS BA 8791E.
