About this file

This document is a comprehensive specification for traditional asbestos abatement services at the VA Medical Center in Chillicothe, Ohio for Project Number 538-24-100. The project involves removing approximately 10 square feet of tan duct mastic containing 5% chrysotile asbestos, classified as a Category II non-friable material. The abatement contractor will be responsible for preparing regulated work areas, implementing strict safety protocols, using specialized equipment like negative air machines and HEPA filtration systems, conducting wet removal techniques, and properly disposing of asbestos-containing waste materials.

Key technical requirements include establishing negative pressure containment areas, using amended water for wetting asbestos materials, implementing comprehensive personal protective equipment protocols, conducting air monitoring and sampling, performing final visual inspections and clearance testing, and ensuring all work complies with OSHA, EPA, and state regulations. The specification provides extensive detailed requirements for worker training, decontamination procedures, respiratory protection, medical surveillance, and waste handling. The project will require specialized industrial hygiene oversight, with both the contractor's industrial hygienist and an independent VA professional industrial hygienist monitoring the abatement process to ensure safety and regulatory compliance.
