1.0 Purpose and Scope

The Atmospheric Diving System (ADS) 2000 is designed for rapid deployment and installation on available Vessels of Opportunity (VOO). The system can be used to its maximum depth when launched from the Launch and Recovery System (LARS), or to shallower depths when launched with the VOO crane (hand-tended diving).

This procedure details the installation of the LARS and the use of the LARS trolley as a manned support stand during hand tended diving. An overview of the attachment methods is provided, as well as vessel evaluation criteria, installation and load testing procedures, and a form for documenting the installation. This procedure is invoked by reference (2) and when necessary to prepare for hand-tended diving.

VOO installation records, Appendix H, and supporting documentation shall be maintained for the life of the ADS program.

2.0 Attachment Methods

Two attachment methods are available to secure the LARS to a VOO deck. The first uses an intermediate skid (ISKID), a structure placed between the LARS skid and the VOO deck.

The ISKID is attached to the LARS skid with 26 bolts mounted horizontally into the LARS skid mounting points. The LARS skid/ISKID assembly is secured to the VOO deck using Baxter bolts. The ISKID raises the LARS skid approximately 12 inches, allowing the LARS to be used where low obstructions exist along the VOO gunwale. If required, the ISKID can be welded to the VOO deck if no Baxter bolts are available and the gunwale is obstructed. This method may permanently damage the intermediate skid and should only be used if necessary.

Appendix B provides the general layout of the ISKID structure.

The second LARS attachment method uses sacrificial tabs. These rectangular steel plates are bolted to the 26 mounting holes on the LARS skid and welded to the VOO deck. The tabs are discarded at the end of the dive sequence, or may be left on deck for future installations.

Appendix D provides the drawing of the sacrificial tabs.

In hand tended diving, where the LARS is not used, the trolley can be removed from the LARS and used as a support stand for the manned ADS suit prior to lifting overboard. Footer plates are used to secure the trolley to the VOO deck using Baxter bolts. If no Baxter bolts are available, rectangular tubes can be attached to the trolley wheel mount and then welded to the VOO deck. The tubes are discarded at the end of the dive sequence, or may be left on deck for future installations.

3.0 Constraints

3.1 VOO Qualification

The baseline VOO for the ADS system is the U.S. Navy T-ATF fleet ocean tug.

The VOO must be structurally capable of supporting LARS operations. Certification by a recognized authority for operation in the region of use may be considered a minimum standard for acceptability.

Ensure compatibility of the weld rod to the ship’s steel deck prior to commencing work on the VOO.

3.2 Detailed Constraints

Structural and deck space requirements for the LARS and associated equipment are specified as follows. Reference (12 ) provides additional equipment placement and space requirement information.

3.2.1 Minimum allowable deck pressure

Intermediate skid installation: 416 lb/ft2

Sacrificial tab installation: 955 lb/ft2

Hand Tended Installation: 100 lb/ft2

PDU: 900 lb/ft2 (203 lb/ft2 when using two 12” x 12” x 5’ (min) blocks of dunnage)

HPU: 750 lb/ft2 (490 lb/ft2 when using two 12” x 12” x 5’ (min) blocks of dunnage)

3.2.2 Minimum Baxter bolt pullout strength: 10,000 lb.

3.2.3 Vessel structure

Deck and deck attachment points must not have:

Damage or cracking

Cracked welds

Pitting or other corrosion greater than 25% of the original material thickness

3.2.3 Deck area (See Appendices E and F)

Minimum deck square footage (Entire ADS Installation): 1,900 sq. ft.

Minimum dimensions: 38 ft. x 50 ft.

(These dimensions are for the installation of 2 LARS skids, 1 control van, 1 hydraulic power unit (HPU), 1 power distribution unit (PDU), and 2 generators).

3.2.4 Component placement restrictions

HPU – LARS skid separation: 20 ft. maximum (for 25 ft. hoses)

45 ft. maximum (for 50 ft hoses)

Maximum separation between any two ADS deck mounted components: 70 ft.

Consideration should be given to maximize the distance between the overboarding position of the ADS suit and the vessel’s propellers and thrusters.
