About this file

This document provides guidance on winterizing unmanned barges and includes an inspection checklist. It outlines procedures for disconnecting water lines and steam lines, blowing out remaining water from pipes, adding antifreeze to toilets, removing and attaching plugs and drains from low points, and inspecting piping systems weekly. The inspection checklist covers winterizing various areas of the barge such as galleys, sculleries, wardroom pantries, hot water heaters, scuttlebutts, washrooms, staterooms, firemain, CHT, steam, salt water, and fresh water piping systems as well as sump pumps, air conditioning, refrigerators, laundry machines, and other components to remove water and protect against freezing. It recommends maintaining compartments above 40 degrees Fahrenheit using heating facilities during long storage periods to prevent damage from expansion and contraction of steel bulkheads.

WINTERIZING BARGES FOR TOW OR STORAGE

1. Winterizing of Unmanned Barges . When craft are unmanned and unattended or being prepared for tow during freezing weather periods, the following actions shall be accomplished by the barge custodian:

a. Disconnect all water lines from dockside.

b. Disconnect shore steam lines.

c. Blow air through all lines to clear and remove the remaining water from low points.

d. Remove all water or pour anti-freeze into all toilets to obtain a 50/50 mixture with residue water.

e. Remove plugs and drains from all low points and attach these plugs and drains to the piping and fixtures from which they were removed.

f. Weekly, inspect piping systems for damage.

2. Inspection check list. Barges stored for long periods of time in below freezing conditions without heat will damage paint in compartments and passageways due to expansion and contraction of steel bulkheads.

It is recommended to maintain compartments above 40 degrees Fahrenheit if heating facilities are available during long periods of storage. Use the check list on page 2 to inspect and protect systems that will freeze if not winterized.
