Peak Particle Velocity shall be the measure of the level of ground vibration and is defined as the maximum of any one of the three mutually perpendicular components of motion.
2.1.1 Certificate of Vibration Calibration
Submit current certification of calibration. A monitoring instrument shall be calibrated annually and when an instrument is repaired and the repair may affect the response of the instrument. Calibration shall be done by the manufacturer of the equipment, or by an organization approved by the manufacturer, or by an organization having verifiable knowledge of the calibration procedures developed by the manufacturer. The calibration procedure shall include testing the response of the entire system to externally-generated dynamic inputs. These inputs shall test the entire
SECTION 31 01 00 Page 2 monitoring system at a sufficient number of discrete frequency intervals to assure flat response throughout the frequency ranges specified. Dynamic reference standards used for calibration shall be traceable to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Calibration procedures and documentation of calibration shall be made available for review by the Government.
A nonalterable sticker that is clearly visible shall be firmly affixed to the instrument. The sticker shall indicate the name of the calibration facility, the calibration technician, the date of calibration and frequency range of the monitor.
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.1 GENERAL EXECUTION
Where construction activity involving vibration is performed, vibration monitoring shall be required. The Contractor shall employ a Vibration Control Consultant to monitor and analyze results from seismographic recordings and to provide advice in order to eliminate the occurrence of damage to the existing structures due to construction operations. Initial tests of construction activity shall be monitored under the supervision of the Vibration Control Consultant who will determine the maximum vibration limitations and maintain the vibration effects at or below the limitation levels at existing structures or utilities.
After completion of the tests, the Vibration Control Consultant shall monitor and record ground motion caused by construction activities, and provide the Government with daily monitoring records. Should data indicate that limiting levels have been exceeded; the Contractor shall take necessary measures to reduce vibrations to acceptable levels. Should conditions warrant, the Government reserves the right, at any time, to require the Contractor to submit a revised plan to reduce the vibrations.
Nothing presented in these specifications shall in any way relieve the Contractor of any responsibility for any and all damage to existing structures, utilities, or the work. Any damage incurred as a result of the Contractor's construction operations shall be repaired by the Contractor at his sole cost to the complete satisfaction of the property owner and Government.
3.2 PREPARATION
