23. INTRODUCTION TO THE ILLUSTRATED PARTS BREAKDOWN (IPB).
24. The IPB contains information applicable to the Relays assemblies and components. The IPB illustrates, lists, and describes the parts necessary for equipment support. The IPB is used for requisitioning, identifying parts and for illustrating removal/disassembly and installation/assembly relationships.
25. GROUP ASSEMBLY PARTS LIST (GAPL). The GAPL consist of a breakdown of the unit into subassemblies and detailed parts (WP 006 00). The GAPL is a six-column format. All symbols and abbreviations used in the GAPL are for use in accordance with ASME-Y14.38M Abbreviations and Acronyms for Use on Drawings and Related Documents.
26. Index Number. In this column the index numbers are assigned in numerical sequence and are used essentially in disassembly sequence. The index numbers are assigned in this column, and then added to the exploded view illustration of the equipment/repairable.
27. Part Number. This column lists the prime contractor part number, government standard part number, or other vendor part number.
28. Description. This column lists the item nomenclature plus the modifiers necessary to identify the item. The assemblies, subassemblies, detail parts, and attaching parts are properly identified (named or indented) to show the relationships to the assembly. Attaching parts are listed immediately after the attached part and preceding any details of the assembly. The caption /ATTACHING PARTS/ appears in the description column preceding the attaching parts and the symbol -- is used to indicate the end of the attaching parts for that part or assembly.
29. Vendor Codes. Part numbers for other than standard government parts or of the prime contractor are identified by vendor code number enclosed in // following the nomenclature of the part.
30. Make-From. For simple items (e.g., hoses, lines, tubes, brackets, cables, etc.), coded for manufacture at intermediate or depot level of maintenance, the material from which the item is made will be included in // following the item nomenclature or vendor code number. For more complex items, a drawing of the item will be provided in the maintenance portion of the applicable work package.
31. Units Per Assembly. This column lists the total number of each part required per assembly or subassembly and is not necessarily the total number used in the end item of equipment. The letters AR (as required) are used to identify bulk items. The letters REF (reference) are used to indicate the part is listed and illustrated elsewhere in the IPB and is included in the present listing as a reference only.
32. Usable on Code. This column indicates the usability of parts on different models or series of the equipment.
If no letter appears on this column, then the part is used on all models/series of the end item of equipment.
33. Equivalent Parts. An equivalent part is a part used interchangeably with one or more parts, none of which are preferable over the other. All equivalent part numbers are listed with an asterisk (*) in the USABLE ON CODE column.
34. Source, Maintenance, and Recoverability (SM&R) Code. This column contains the SM&R codes as approved by the government. Code definitions and part kits information are contained in OPNAVINST 4110.2 and NAVSUPINST 4423.29. The explanations of the SM&R codes are given in Table 5.
35. NUMERICAL INDEX OF PART NUMBERS. The Numerical Index of Part Numbers is contained in WP 001
01. This index includes a complete alphanumeric list of part numbers or noun names (if a part number has not been assigned). Alphabetic O’s are considered as numeric zeros.
36. Part Number. This column lists all part numbers that appear in the part number column of the GAPL. This column also lists the identifying noun in lieu of the part number when no part number has been assigned. All part numbers and noun names are listed in alphanumeric sequence.
37. Work Package/Figure/Index Number. This column lists the work package, figure, and index number assigned to the associated part number. The numbers are separated by //; the first number is the WP in which the part number is located, the second number is the figure number within the WP, and the third number is the index number identifying the part within the figure.
38. HOW TO USE ILLUSTRATED PARTS BREAKDOWN. The following instructions are provided to assist the user in researching within the IPB.
39. When Part Number is Not Known. Determine the function and application of the part required. Refer to the GAPL (WP 006 00) and select the most appropriate group, system, or assembly work package.

34. FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION.
35. The Relay provides RF communication between the Ground Radio Frequency Unit (GRFU) and the NCDL Transponder Model 600TR (hereafter referred to as Transponder, refer to NAVAIR 16-30SNTC600TR-1). The GRFU sends the command and control data to the Relay and the Relay radiates the information to the Tran-sponder. The Relay then receives telemetry data from the Transponder and sends the data back to the GRFU.
For more information on the SNTC Block 3B Ground Control Station (GCS), refer to NAVAIR 16-50SNTC-3 and
NAVAIR 16-50SNTC-4.
36. When powering up the Relay, it takes about a second for the PWR light to turn on. Then the rest of the lights will turn on plus the numeric display will show eights. A few seconds after powering on, all LEDs turn off except the PWR light, and the numeric display shows previous address and frequency configuration.
37. The address on the front panel is read by the Relay. The address can only be set after the Relay powers on and not receiving any valid uplink messages. The Relay switches between the primary frequency and a cycle of the 24 frequency channels until a connection occurs. The primary frequency is changed by the FREQ INCR and FREQ DECR push buttons and set using the SET push button. The frequency cycle will go between the primary frequency and the range of 24 frequencies (Figure 4). The Relay communicates with the GRFU over the selected frequency channel (Table 2) using a poll/response method. The occupied bandwidth of the NCDL RF datalink is 263 kilohertz (kHz).
38. When the Relay overheats, it will send telemetry to the GCS to signal overheating. There’s a temperature sensor that will provide overheat warning, which is indicated by the red Thermal Warning indicator. The Relay will toggle this indicator on and off, at a 2 second rate, until the unit is powered off.
39. The direct LOS operational range of the Relay is 200 nautical miles (nmi) from the GRFU and 130 nmi from the Relay to the target(s) or Shipboard Transponder(s). The total operational range for a GRFU utilizing a Relay is 330 nmi.
40. SHIPPING PROCEDURES.
41. The loaded Relay shipping container (Figure 5) requires a two-man lift. Failure to comply may result in injury to personnel.
42. Do not use the handles on the front of the Relay for lifting or carrying. Failure to comply may result in dam-age to the Relay.
43. The Relay is shipped inside of a Shipping Container (ERD191140). If appropriate shipping containers are unavailable, the Relay shall be shipped in accordance with MIL-STD-2073-1E, Standard Practice for Military Packaging.

13. PRELIMINARY CHECKS AND PROCEDURES.
14. Prior to installation, the UHF and GPS cables used to connect on the Relay to its respective connection and or antenna shall be tested to ensure insertion loss of less than or equal to 6 dB. The maximum allowable Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (VSWR) is 1.7 for all UHF antenna systems used. Also prior to testing, inspect the exterior of the Relay. Identify all dents or cracks. Check all switches for proper actuation. Check connectors for worn, bent, or broken contacts. If any damage jeopardizing the structural integrity is identified, the Relay must be returned to depot for refurbishment.
15. RELAY ANTENNA ASSEMBLY TESTING.
16. The following tests shall be conducted after equipment is installed in its operational configuration.
17. After inspection of the Relay components, a series of tests shall be performed on the antenna systems to ensure proper target communication and operational range. The Insulation Resistance and Insertion Loss tests shall be performed on the coaxial cables of the UHF antenna systems in operational configuration, which includes any connectors and adapters necessary for operation. The Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (VSWR) test shall be performed on the operational configuration of the antenna and coaxial cable of the UHF antenna systems. The UHF cable assemblies shall be checked for insulation resistance, insertion loss, and, as appropriate, VSWR after installation and every twelve months after installation. The GPS cable assemblies shall also be checked for insulation resistance and insertion loss.
18. INSULATION RESISTANCE TEST. The Insulation Resistance test confirms no deficiency is present in the insulation of a coaxial cable. An Insulation Tester is used to apply 500 volts between the core conductor and shielding of a coaxial cable. A healthy cable will maintain a very high resistance to current leakage at a high voltage.
A damaged cable will exhibit low insulation resistance, which will result in poor signal quality or damage to the Relay during operation
19. INSERTION LOSS TEST. Insertion loss is a measure of the energy lost as a signal propagates through a coaxial cable. The loss, measured in decibels (dB), is proportional to the signal frequency, the length of the coaxial cable, and the attenuation of the coaxial cable type. High losses along the coaxial cable can limit the operational range of the Relay.
20. Insertion Loss Test Configuration. To check for abnormal insertion loss, the estimated insertion loss must be calculated using the cable length, number of connectors along the cable, signal frequency range, and the manufacturer’s listed cable attenuation. All cable elements, connectors, and adapters present in the antenna system shall be tested in an operational configuration. The Maximum allowable cable loss is 6 dB for UHF cables and 8 dB for GPS cables.
21. LMR-400 (Ultraflex or Standard) or RG-142 cables, with TNC and N-Type connectors, are authorized for use with the UHF antenna system. Refer to Table 2 for cable attenuation values.
22. LMR-400 (Ultraflex or Standard) or RG-142 cables, with TNC connectors, are authorized for use with the GPS antenna system. Refer to Table 2 for cable attenuation values.
Table 2. Cable Attenuation

23. RF cables used for UHF and GPS signals shall not be serially connected to obtain longer cable runs.
24. VOLTAGE STANDING WAVE RATIO (VSWR) TEST. The VSWR is a measure of the amount of energy being reflected back into the radio transmitter of the Relay. Excessive reflected energy can cause the Relay to lower transmission power and damage may result.
25. ANTENNA SYSTEM TEST SUPPORT EQUIPMENT REQUIRED. The support equipment required to perform the antenna system testing is listed in Table 3.
