Attachment: USCG Bldg 576 Seismic Upgrade RF Information
March 2014
This is an extract from a report received as a result of:
A STATE OF ALASKA DEPT. OF HEALTH AND SOCIAL SERVICES
Radiological Health Program Representative performed Radiation surveys
– January 23 and 24, 2014.
Testing was performed at the Electronic Support Detachment building, (ESD) on U.S.
Coast Guard property in Kodiak.
A survey of second floor hallways, meeting rooms, and stairwells at each end using instrumentation to detect ionizing radiation, microwave and RF frequency. Testing was also conducted inside each of three locked rooms and on the first floor inside the building. Outside testing was conducted around the antenna tower. During the testing period all operations of the facility were normal. Portions of the first level of the building near each entrance end were also tested. The testing was conducted using two RF/microwave meters and one ionizing radiation meter simultaneously. The RF/microwave meters were positioned at right angles due to directionality of the sensors.
Test results found no instance of abnormal or unsafe levels of ionizing radiation, microwave, or RF signals.
Repeat testing was performed the following day, Friday, January 24, 2014 with systems fully activated to determine if higher level operation will produce significant radiation sufficient to cause adverse health effects.
In summary, there were no findings of ionizing radiation, EMF, or radiofrequency emissions at any of the ESD locations tested in either the “cold” state or while transmitting.
Test instruments used included:
TriField 100 XE which has a broadband detection accuracy of +/- 30% for 60 Hz electric fields, and ½ to 2X reading for radio/microwave signals.
The ionizing radiation instrument was an SEI Inspector EXP with mylar window, S/N 20739 with a lower level of detection at 1 microR/hr.
