In commercial telephone usage, that property of a circuit having a bandwidth greater than 4 kHz. An imprecise designation of a signal that occupies a broad frequency spectrum. NOTE: This term is often used to distinguish it from a narrowband signal, where both terms are subjectively defined relative to the implied context.

C1. CHAPTER 1. GLOBAL INFORMATION GRID (GIG) CIRCUIT AND TRUNK FILE
FORMAT
C1.1 General. The Global Information Grid (GIG) (formerly the Defense Information Infrastructure [DII]) Circuit and Trunk Files are computerized compilation of existing and planned utilization of National Communications System/Global Information Grid (NCS/GIG) communications resources. Each file is designed to provide specific engineering, operational, and management data containing capabilities of NCS/GIG resources. Circuit and Trunk records are generated from Telecommunications Service Orders (TSOs). Telecommunications Service Orders are generated by Telecommunications Service Requests (TSRs).
C1.2 Definition of Terms. The terms identified under this paragraph are those which form the basis for the GIG Operational Data Base and which must be followed to maintain the usefulness of this data base.
C1.2.1 Circuit. A communication capability between two or more users, a user terminal and a switching terminal, or between two switches. The assignment of a Command Communications Service Designator (CCSD) to each circuit is required and is explained in chapter C14.
C1.2.2 Trunk.
C1.2.2.1 Single Channel. A communications path terminating at the point where terminal equipment induces/extracts intelligence into/from the transmission media.
C1.2.2.2 Multichannel. A multiplexed or multipair cable communications path terminating where the channels are muxed/demuxed or where cable pairs end.
C1.2.2.3 Channel. That portion of the trunk used to carry intelligence between the terminal points of the trunk.
C1.2.2.4 Link. A transmission path operating between two successive equipment locations. In cable facilities, the equipment locations are considered to be those points where cables terminate or branch. In wireless systems, the equipment locations are considered to be radio frequency (RF) repeaters, transmitters, or receivers.
C1.3 Circuit and Trunk File Use.
C1.3.1 The current GIG Circuit and Trunk files contain many information fields which are used jointly or individually to assist in the following activities:
dc310651_c1 file:///D|/copy-temp-area/dc310651_c1.html (1 of 5) [2/21/2003 10:44:05 AM]
C1.3.1.1 Allocation of circuits and trunks.
C1.3.1.2 Status reporting (DISAC 310-55-1, Status Reporting, 22 January 2000).
C1.3.1.3 Planning and engineering of circuits and trunks.
C1.3.1.4 Statistical analysis of GIG resources.
C1.3.1.5 Simulation studies.
C1.3.1.6 Daily operation of GIG operation centers.
C1.3.1.7 Certification of restoration priorities.
C1.3.1.8 Provisioning of inventory of resources to operating agencies.
C1.3.1.9 Studies concerning the expansion and reduction in size or capability, or the consolidation or elimination of GIG facilities or stations.
C1.3.1.10 Ensure that available capacity is configured to best handle the traffic loads being generated.
C1.3.2 Each of the above has diverse requirements for software-generated reports. The requirements may differ in format, content, primary and secondary sort sequence, etc. Therefore, in addition to the standard circuit and trunk listings (F1.1 and F1.2), output reports may be obtained by selecting any one or more data elements contained in the files in the format which the user desires.
C1.4 Data Elements and Codes. Descriptions of data elements and tables of codes used in the DISA Circuit and Trunk Files are contained in chapters C2 through C88. In some cases, where composite data elements are used in the files, all data elements that are related to that composite data element are listed in the same chapter; i.e., CCSD, COMCL SERVICE ID/CSIF.
C1.5 File Responsibility. The Office of Primary Responsibility (OPR) for management control and operational direction required to maintain the files is Headquarters, DISA (NS51).
C1.6 Circuit and Trunk File Changes. All recommended changes in file format, content, or procedures will be submitted to the Director, DISA, ATTN: NS51, 5275 Leesburg Pike, Falls Church, VA 22041, for consideration before any other action is taken.

C2. CHAPTER 2. ACTIVATED WITH EXCEPTION
C2.1 Data Element Explanation.
C2.1.1 Indicates that the circuit or trunk has been activated (accepted by the users), but does not meet the technical specifications of the applicable Telecommunications Service Order
(TSO).
C2.1.2 Abbreviations. EX.
C2.1.3 Data Expression.
C2.1.3.1 Type of Data: Coded.
C2.1.3.2 Structure: Alpha.
C2.1.3.3 Length: One character.
C2.1.3.4 Limitations: Contains a code only if the circuit or trunk is activated without meeting the technical specifications outlined.
Otherwise blank.
C2.2 Selection. Input by data base maintenance personnel based on exception report received from the responsible GIG station.
C2.3 Code Control. Codes are assigned by Headquarters, DISA (NS51), which must approve additional codes.
C2.4 Listing of Codes. Codes and descriptions used in this file are as follows:
C2.4.1 Code Description.
C2.4.1.1 A FOR TRUNKS: Activated on group, supergroup, master-group, (T1, T3, OC3, DSO, DS3, etc.) or systems other than that specified in the applicable TSO. (Can only be used with prior approval of the DISA action agency.) FOR CIRCUITS: Activated on trunk channel other than specified by the TSO. (Can only be used with prior approval of the DISA action agency.)
C2.4.1.2 B FOR CIRCUITS OR TRUNKS: Activated under marginal conditions due to lack of equipment; e.g., reduced power operations for trunks, regenerative repeaters for circuits, etc.
C2.4.1.3 C FOR CIRCUITS OR TRUNKS: Activated under marginal conditions due to path limitations; e.g., unusable frequency for trunks, marginal channel for circuits.
C2.4.1.4 D FOR TRUNKS: Activated under marginal conditions which file:///D|/copy-temp-area/dc310651_c2.html (1 of 2) [2/21/2003 10:44:09 AM] cause the system to be unable to operate the full channelization.
C2.4.1.5 FOR CIRCUITS: Activated, but not in the mode of operations specified in the TSO. For example, TSO specified full-duplex, but due to equipment limitations, circuit was activated as half duplex send and received.
C2.4.1.6 E FOR CIRCUITS ONLY: Activated without security equipment when TSO specified secured.
C2.4.1.7 F FOR CIRCUITS OR TRUNKS: Activated without complete testing due to lack of all required test equipment.
C2.4.1.8 Z For CIRCUITS OR TRUNKS: Activated with exception for reasons other than those covered by any of the above. See circuit or trunk history file for details.

C3. CHAPTER 3. AGENCY REQUIRING THE SERVICE
C3.1 Data Element Explanation.
C3.1.1 Identifies the Government agency requiring the service. As used in this context the term "agency" refers to the Government agency; e.g., Army, Navy, DISA, DIS, etc., that requires the circuit being ordered in support of its mission. It is not intended to identify Operations and Maintenance (O&M) and funding agencies, although in many instances they are the same.
C3.1.2 Abbreviation. AG RS.
