DISN VisionDISN Vision

• Converged IP and optical infrastructure support multiple services at all necessary classification levels across a “Black” or “Striped” Core

• Integrated and service-driven with access to all DISN services and classification levels through a unified customer interface

• Standardized on Ethernet technology with Shared network infrastructure for all services

• Secure and highly available

• Supports data, voice and video services with predictable performance

DISN EvolutionDISN Evolution

Near term Transport Initiatives:Near term Transport Initiatives:

Tech Refresh FY 08Tech Refresh FY 08--1212

• Timing and Sync (T&S)

• Optical Refresh

• ATM Elimination

• Low-Speed TDM Elimination

• Power System Refresh

Timing & SyncTiming & Sync

• FY10: Initiative required for EOL components at 35 Sites

• FY11: All CONUS T&S configurations will be connected into the DCN to allow central and automated monitoring of the T&S operation to connect T&S components to the DCN

• FY12: R&D will be sought for new Timing and Sync technical solutions.

– Solutions identified will be used to technically refresh EOL T&S components during the mid-term spiral.

Optical RefreshOptical Refresh

• OTN is foundation of the DISN transport layer

– High-speed SONET, SDH and PDH network built on 10 Gbps optical trunking

• Technologies

– OTS—Ciena CoreStream® Agility

– Ciena CN4200 Metro DWDM (Europe only)

– Sycamore SN16000 (SN16K) ODXC and SN9000 (SN9K)

ODXC

– Cisco MSPP—15454 and 15310

– Adtran M13 (multiplexes 28 T1s into a T3).

• Goal

– OTN Expansion to Support Legacy Transition

– Replacement of EOL Components

– Migration to packet infrastructure

– Migration to Ethernet interface as standard interface

ATM Elimination StrategyATM Elimination Strategy

• Reduce ATM footprint by transitioning circuits to alternative existing or emerging DISN services

– Circuits categorized and bin solutions/work-arounds developed and approved (NS-CTO, GE)

– Remove ATM nodes with no remaining customer circuits

• No further deployment/provisioning of ATM assets

• Collapse the ATM Network

– Backhauling to Last ATM Switch Topology (LAST) when necessary

• Implementation focused planning in the form of a two day working group with customers – late July

TDM Elimination StrategyTDM Elimination Strategy

• Where feasible, migrate users off the services provided by the infrastructure to alternative services provided by newer infrastructure, such as Ethernet access to Assured IP or Layer 3 VPN, or to maintained services, such as T-1 Private Line.

– In some cases small nodes have already removed by such migrations; typically these cases involved use of T1 PL transport to move users off of lightly-loaded nodes.

• Expand alternative access mechanisms, such as Ethernet, to include sites that have only low-speed TDM or ATM equipment.

• Select, test and deploy STI equipment for remaining user circuits that cannot be migrated to alternatives in the near term.

Power SystemsPower Systems

• The following Power System equipment will reach EOL CONUS in the near-term spiral:

– 52 Emerson Vortex DC Power systems that reached EOL December 2009

– 52 Emerson LXP DC Power Systems that will reach EOL December 2010.

– 30 Peco II inverters (support network management) that are at EOL.

– 15 MGE Topaz II inverter that are at EOL.

– 40 Batteries systems that will reach EOL within the year
