VERTICAL WIND TUNNEL BODY STABILIZATION

FOR OFFICIAL USE ONLY

Learning Objective DESCRIBE the proper body positions in Free Fall to maintain body stabilization, execute left and right turns, hover control, side slides, checking the altimeter, and simulate manually activating the main parachute during Free Fall operations in accordance with Military Free Fall Parachuting Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures, ATTP 3-18.11; and Naval Special Warfare Air Operations manual, COMNAVSPECWARCOMINST 3000.3 (Series)

Body groups that affect stability

Hips Arms Torso Legs Head

Body Position

Hips

Center point of the arch Lowest point of the body Avoid arching with the chest

Demonstrate a proper arch

Body Position Arms

90 degree bend at the shoulder 90 degree bend at the elbow Hands should be about level with the top of your head, and thumbs should be somewhere between your ear and the front of your head.

Use just enough strength to hold in place

Body Position Torso

Straight Relaxed (Rigid Torso = Rigid Everywhere) Keep chest rounded This does not mean arch with your chest

Body Position Legs

45 degree bend at the knee Knees should be shoulder width apart Feet pointed Use just enough strength to hold in place

Demonstrate proper arms and legs

Body Position Head

Keep your head up as if you were looking at the horizon You can move your head around without sacrificing stability (keep your head on a swivel)

Body Position Neutral Freefall Arch

Pelvis down (arch) Positive Leg Pressure, Shoulder Width Apart Keep your Head up Elbows at approximately 90 degrees Relax Demonstrate a proper neutral body position

Neutral Freefall Arch

Neutral Freefall Arch

Demonstration

Relative Wind / Air Flow

The air flow around your body while in freefall is often referred to as Relative Wind
Understanding this air flow is critical!!
Your initial contact with this air occurs when you exit the aircraft in a stable position (much like the air down the side of your car as you put your hand out the window at 60 MPH!)
As gravity takes over and you transition to a belly to earth position, the air appears to be coming up from the ground.

Relative Wind / Air Flow

Hand Signals

In order to assist you in attaining a good body position and to prompt you to action, we use hand signals.
It is crucial that you execute the appropriate action immediately upon the signal

Hand Signals (cont) Arch (Pelvis Down)

Hand Signals (cont) Arch (Pelvis Down)

Push pelvis forward

Keep chin up and look to the horizon

Keep legs still

Hand Signals (cont) Legs Out

Hand Signals (cont) Legs Out

Extend toes towards horizon 6” at a time until the signal is removed

Move smoothly

Shoulder width apart

Hand Signals (cont) Legs In

Hand Signals (cont) Legs In

Retract legs inwards 6” at a time until signal is removed

Smoothly

Keep arch

Hand Signals (cont) Check Arms

Hand Signals (cont) Check Arms

A straight line from elbow to elbow

Thumbs are almost in line with your ears

Relax the hands, no clenched fists!

Hand Signals (cont) Bring Knees Closer/Wider

Hand Signals (cont) Bring Knees Closer/Wider

Keep toes pointed

Move knees smoothly to shoulder width

Arch simultaneously

This will make arching easier!

Hand Signals (cont) Chin Up

Hand Signals (cont) Chin Up

Elevate Chin and Look Straight Ahead

Arch simultaneously

Hand Signals (cont) The “Relax” Signal

Instructor shows loose hand

Take deep breath and exhale into relaxed arch

Loosen your own hands

Movement

Always begin movement from a neutral body position
Begin movements slowly. Increase input with proficiency and comfort
It does not take much input to move in the tunnel

Movement

Forward Movement
From a neutral body position
Slowly bring hands closer to your shoulder
Slowly extend (straighten) your legs

Movement

Backward Movement
From a neutral body position
Slowly extend (straighten) your arms in front of you
Slowly bring your feet closer to your buttocks

Movement

Left Turn
From a neutral body position
Look in the direction you want to turn
Slowly dip your left elbow while simultaneously raising your right elbow
Turn, Coast, Counter

To counter a turn, give input for the opposite direction you are turning.

Movement

Right Turn
From a neutral body position
Look in the direction you want to turn
Slowly dip your Right elbow while simultaneously raising your Left elbow
Turn, Coast, Counter

To counter a turn, give input for the opposite direction you are turning.

Movement

Altimeter Check
Altimeter is always worn on the left wrist
From a neutral body position
Rotate your left hand/wrist as if you were checking your watch
Rotate your head so that you can see the top of your wrist
Do not bring your left hand to your face

Movement

Pull Sequence
Used to inform other jumpers around you that you are getting ready to deploy your parachute
Three waves of the arms
Use this time to clear your airspace around you
