About this file
The file is an RFI (Request for Information) response log for a Storage Aid System project at Grissom Air Reserve Base, Indiana, detailing technical specifications and clarifications for various material handling equipment. The project involves installing mechanized material handling systems including rider reach units, order picker units, bin shelving, stack racks, plastic storage bins, and an embedded rail system in Building 209. Key technical details include requirements for lift limit switches, charger compatibility, shelving spacing, bin configuration, and fire suppression system removal, with specific guidance on installation, positioning, and interface with existing infrastructure.
The related federal contract opportunity is a 100% small business set-aside solicitation (FA860425RB032) issued by the Department of the Air Force Materiel Command Lifecycle Management Center at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. The solicitation aims to improve supply chain management functions by modernizing material handling systems, with goals of increasing operational efficiency, reducing costs, preventing material damage, improving safety, and decreasing personnel requirements. The project involves designing, delivering, installing, testing, and orienting a turn-key system, with a NAICS CODE of 333922 and subject to specific subcontracting limitations.

| Topic | Question | Answer | |||
| Appendix+D – Rider Reach unit | 1. | Requests a lift limit switch – at what lift height – Reference section 4.2. No. 4? | Typically settable onsite, lift limit switch shall be set at the appropriate height to interface with the provided racking while avoiding ceiling obstacles. | ||
| Appendix+D – Rider Reach unit | 2. | Requests Caster wheel brake – not available – is this a requirement? | Alternatives to caster brakes that prevent the movement of and provide stability of the rider reach when stationary shall be acceptable | ||
| Appendix+D – Rider Reach unit | 3. | Requests on-board 240V charger – this will limit battery capacity – is this a requirement? | Charger is not required to be onboard but must be compatible with 240-volt source if so. Location for charger unit is denoted on AF Drawing VGR301-01. | ||
| Order Picker unit | 1. Requests a lift limit switch – at what lift height? | Typically settable onsite, lift limit switch shall be set at the appropriate height to interface with the provided racking while avoiding ceiling obstacles. | |||
| Order Picker unit | 1. Requests wire guidance – at what line driver frequency? | No specified line driver frequency is required if the performance specifications are met. | |||
| Order Picker unit | 1. Requests Caster wheel brake – not available – is this a requirement? | Alternatives to caster brakes that prevent the movement of and provide stability of the rider reach when stationary shall be acceptable | |||
| Order Picker unit | 4. | Requests on-board 240V charger – this will limit battery capacity – is this a requirement? | Charger is not required to be onboard but must be compatible with 240-volt source if so. Location for charger unit is denoted on AF Drawing VGR301-01. | ||
| Appendix C - Bin Shelving | A height of 12' is asked for on the drawing with spacing of 12" (2), 8" (4) and 5" (16). This adds up to 136" of space leaving 8" for the 22 shelves and does not take the 3" - 5" base into account. Is the preference to maintain the shelf spacing with taller bin shelving or reduce the spacing and/or number of shelves? | Spacing of shelving is to be maintained where possible, adjusted as needed during install (if interface with plastic storage bins in Appendix F is maintained), and shelves provided but not installed as a last resort if other options are not possible. The total count of shelves and bins provided shall match those specified. | |||
| Q: “For the 11 x 4 x 4 plastic bins, is there a preference in style? | A: Appendix F has been updated with more information regarding the plastic bins. | ||||
| 1. The Mezzanine that is to be removed contains extensive sprinkler systems that will need to be disconnected and capped as part of the removal. There is also extensive electrical wiring that is included. Is the removal of these items included in our SOW or will this be handled by Grissom CE ? | A: Removal of the entire mezzanine system to include the attached electrical and sprinkler system are included in this SOW. The Grissom Fire Department will need to be notified when the sprinkler system is being disconnected from the building system, but no removal shall be done by base personnel. | ||||
| 2. Will the bins that are currently located in the existing bin shelving that contain parts being used by LRS be relocated by Base Personnel prior to disassembly and rem | |||||
| Appendix F | A: All stored material shall be moved from the racking by base personnel in preparation for demolition. Exact phasing of the demolition will be discussed at the Post Award Conference before ordering/installation. | ||||
| Stack Racks | Please provide additional details for this item as there are many industry options available | A: No specific brand required. Example links as follows: |

| 2. Plastic Storage Bins | a. There are several options available for the sizes of bins specified. Please provide additional details relative to weight capacity, labeling etc. | A: Appendix F has been updated with more information regarding the plastic bins. | |
| 2. Plastic Storage Bins | b. Are the 19,300 bins to be placed on the bin shelving or will this be handled by LRS personnel as they convert the current bin system over to the new bins?” | A: Bins shall be delivered but base personnel shall load the new bins as material is transferred to the new system. | |
| embedded rail system located on VGR301-01: | 1. | Could be ask for CAD drawings to be provided to show us lengths of aisles for the embedded rail system to be installed? | A: CAD drawings provided. |
| embedded rail system located on VGR301-01: | 2. | Some manufacturers and installation services do not install chargers for a wire guidance system. There are options to wire a plug to it if you can provide a drop and the appropriate NEMA plug style. Would this be an acceptable solution? | A: Yes, this would be an acceptable solution. |
| embedded rail system located on VGR301-01: | a. | If so, will the team at Grissom install the power drops to plug in the line drivers? | A: No, any such power drop would need to be installed by the contractor as part of this project. |
| embedded rail system located on VGR301-01: | b. | Could you identify where you would like the line drivers to be installed? I’m not sure if we could get by with two, just in case. Typically, these are done at the end of one of the aisles. | A: No specific location is required for the drivers if they do not interfere with the operation/storage of the provided racking and vehicles. |
| Fire suppression requirements: | 3. | Do you have a fire suppression contractor that we can reach out to, which currently services Grissom, that we could reach out to for services required? | ||
| a. | This would potentially save the base money on the contract by utilizing crew that already services this area | |||
| b. | Fire suppression would need to be drained and removed before we start any demo or installation | A: Base POCs that can be contacted in regards to current fire suppression contractors at Grissom are: |
