About this file

This document is an Appendix B specification for a cantilever rack installation at Grissom Air Reserve Base (ARB) in Building 209. The specification details comprehensive requirements for a cantilever storage rack system, including precise structural specifications for uprights, arms, bases, bracing, connectors, decking, anchoring, and assembly. Key technical requirements include R-Mark® certification for the manufacturer, specific load capacities per Air Force Drawing VGR301-01, galvanized decking, adjustable arm configurations, and strict installation tolerances such as horizontal members level within 1/8 inch over 10 feet and vertical members plumb within 1/2 inch over 10 feet.

The document also outlines quality assurance provisions, including mandatory inspection and testing procedures. The primary test involves placing maximum loads randomly in the rack system and examining the structure after four hours for any plastic or elastic deformation. The rack must meet all requirements specified in sections 1, 2, and 3 of the appendix and the Cover Purchase Description, with the color of the rack to be specified by the Contracting Officer's Technical Representative (COTR). The specification is dated 16 May 2025 and was prepared by James Rowland and reviewed by Josh Payne from AFLCMC/EZPAE.

1. SCOPE

1.1. GENERAL SCOPE

This appendix establishes the minimum performance, design, fabrication, installation, and test requirements for cantilever rack at Grissom ARB, Building 209. The work shall be completed in accordance with this appendix, the Cover Purchase Description (PD), and Air Force (AF) Drawing VGR301-01. This appendix is intended to cover all equipment, materials, and labor necessary to complete installation of the system.

2. APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS

Applicable documents shall be in accordance with Section 2 of the Cover PD as well as RMI/ANSI MH16.1 Industrial Steel Storage Racks and RMI/ANSI MH26.2 Design and Testing of Welded Wire Rack Decking.

3. REQUIREMENTS

3.1. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

The manufacturer of the cantilever rack and decking shall be R-Mark® certified.

3.2. CHARACTERISTICS

Cantilever rack shall conform to the following requirements.

3.2.1. CONFIGURATION REQUIREMENTS

Cantilever rack shall be located and configured as shown on AF Drawing VGR301-01.

3.2.2. STRUCTURE AND INSTALLATION

• UPRIGHTS

o Capacity as shown on AF Drawing VGR301-01 o A means for adjusting arms on nominal three inch centers from 24 inches above the floor to six inches from the top of the upright.

o Labled with capacity and model number.

• BASES

o Sized appropriately for weight capacity and upright sizes in accordance with RMI

• BRACING

o Installed in accordance with RMI.

Grissom ARB, NM – Appendix B - Page 2 of 3

• ARMS

o Capacity and length as shown on AF Drawing VGR301-01 o Fasten securely to upright by use of connector.

o Minimum upward pitch of ¼ inch per foot.

o Not deflect below horizontal plane under capacity.

o Labled with capacity and model number.

o Tethered removeable end stops.

• CONNECTORS

o Not fail under capacity.

o If adjustable, a safety catch feature must be provided for each arm to prevent dislodgement.

• DECKING

o R-Mark compliant.

o Not exhibit permanent deformation and elastic deformation shall not exceed .56 percent of the unsupported span. The following formula shall be used to determine the deflection amount:

Deflection = [(M1 - M2) / shelf beam length ] * 100 o Capable of supporting rack capacity.

o Galvanized.

o Installed between all parallel arms and adjacent bases.

o Installed flat on top of the arms and flush with adjacent decking.

o Installed in such a way to prevent accidental disengagement and be of waterfall style.

o Grid size of as shown on AF Drawing VGR301-01.

• ANCHORING

o Anchored to the floor to prevent tipping or shifting of the structure.

o Leveling shims installed in accordance with RMI.

• ASSEMBLY

o Shall be straight and square.

o Horizontal members level to within 1/8 inch over 10 feet.

o Vertical members plumb to within 1/2 inch over 10 feet.

• ROW MARKERS

o Two card holders shall be installed on the end of each rack section for row identification.

o Card holders capable of holding and shielding 8.5 inch by 11 inch printed labels from debris.

o Securely mounted between 7 feet and 10 feet from the floor.

• COLOR

o Shall be as specified by COTR

4. QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS

4.1. INSPECTION

The cantilever rack shall be inspected to verify that it meets all the requirements of sections 1, 2, and 3 of this appendix and the Cover PD. These inspections shall be completed as part of the system checkout test and again as a part of the quality conformance test.

4.2. TESTS

The following tests shall be performed on the system as part of the system checkout test and again as a part of the quality conformance test.

No. Paragraph Description Result

1. 3.2. Maximum loads shall be placed randomly in the rack system. After not less than four hours, the test loads shall be removed and the rack examined for signs of deformation. If any component of the system exhibits plastic or elastic deformation outside of the approved parameters, the system fails the test.
