SAFETY SUMMARY

The following are general safety precautions and instructions that personnel must understand and apply during many phases of operation and maintenance to ensure personal safety and health and the protection of Air Force property. Portions of this summary may be repeated elsewhere in this publication for emphasis.

OBSERVE WARNING AND CAUTION STATEMENTS

WARNING and CAUTION statements have been strategically placed throughout this manual to emphasize certain steps or procedures for the protection of personnel (WARNING) or possibility of equipment and property damage (CAUTION). A WARNING or CAUTION, once provided, will apply each time the related task is performed, regardless of the number of times the step is repeated throughout the manual. Prior to starting any task, review and understand the WARNINGs and CAUTIONs included in this manual for that task.

KEEP AWAY FROM LIVE CIRCUITS

Operating personnel must observe all safety regulations at all times. Do not replace components inside the equipment with voltage supply turned on. Under certain conditions, dangerous potentials may exist when power control is in the OFF position due to charges retained by capacitors. To avoid injuries, always remove power from discharge and ground a circuit before touching it. Adhere to all lock out/tag out requirements.

DO NOT WEAR JEWELRY

Remove rings, watches, and other metallic objects which may cause shock or burn hazards. Snagged finger rings have caused many serious injuries. Remove finger rings during all periods of maintenance.

DO NOT SERVICE OR ADJUST ALONE

Do not attempt internal service or adjustment with power applied unless another person capable of rendering aid and resuscitation is present. Personnel working with or near dangerous voltage shall be trained in modern methods of resuscitation.

Information and training sources may be obtained from the director of base medical services.

USE ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE (ESD) PROCEDURES

Certain circuit card assemblies and their components will be damaged by seemingly undetectable electrostatic discharge. Care must be exercised during handling/repair of these items. Use electrostatic discharge (ESD) precautionary procedures.

GIVE CLEANERS/CHEMICALS SPECIAL CARE

Keep cleaners in approved safety containers and in minimum quantities. Some cleaners/chemicals may have an effect on skin, eyes, and respiratory tract. Observe manufacturer's WARNING label and current safety directives. Use only in authorized areas. Discard soiled cleaning cloths into safety cans.

S-2

USE SAFETY-APPROVED EQUIPMENT

When cleaners and primers are being applied, use approved explosion-proof lights, blowers, and other equipment. Ensure that firefighting equipment is readily available and in working order.

OBSERVE PRESSURE SYSTEM SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

Pressure system safety precautions apply to all ranges of pressure. Care must be taken during testing to ensure that all test connections are proper and tight prior to applying pressure to the test setup; all system components must be compatible with pressure applied. Use of compressed air can create an environment of propellant foreign particles. Air pressure shall be reduced to less than 30 psi and used with effective chip guarding and personal protective equipment.

WEAR PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

Wear protective clothing/equipment (gloves, apron, eye protection, etc.) approved for the materials, procedures, and tools being used. Contact supervisor for guidance. If necessary, the bioenvironmental engineer of the base safety office should be contacted for guidance.

1-1 PU RPOS E.

The Air Transportable Galley/Lavatory (ATGL) is a self-contained galley/lavatory intended for installation in the forward end of the cargo compartment of C -5, C -130, C - 141, and C-17 aircraft. The A T GL galley provides two meals and one snack f or 160 people f or up to 15 hours.

Electr ical r eceptacles mounted on the right side of the ATGL receive power f rom the aircraft. The ATGL is mounted on a standard 88 x 108- inch pallet (HCU-6/E ) that is compatible with existing aircraft rails, rollers, and materiel handling equipment. Pe netration points are provided to allow the ATGL to be forklifted with the cover installed.

CHAPTER 3

REMOVAL AND DISASSEMBLY

3-1 GENERAL.

NOTE

When shims are removed, they will be measured and retained for installation.

Shims may be used as required.

This chapter contains removal and disassembly procedures for the following components on the galley side of the Air Transportable Galley/Lavatory (ATGL): cabinet module, oven/coffee maker module, countertop, refuse module, and drawer module. The removable component on the lavatory side is the lavatory cabinet. The procedures for removing these assemblies presuppose that the ATGL walls remain installed. The ATGL is made up of the following: roof, center wall, left-side wall, lavatory wall, and right-side wall panels, see figure 3-1. If roof or walls require removal, refer to paragraphs 3-5 through 3-17.

3-2 PREPARATION FOR COMPONENT

REMOVAL.

a. Check AFTO Form 244/245 for open discrepancies.

b. Ensure the ATGL is grounded.

c. Apply electrical power to the ATGL.

d. Close circuit breakers per TO 13B4-4-1.

The plumbing system cannot be purged with compressed air due to check valves installed in the system. The air pressure build-up could cause damage to the check valves and system hoses.

e. Drain water from ATGL as follows: See figure 3-1A.

(1) Extend potable system drain hose (1) to a location outside the aircraft.

(2) Open potable system drain hose valve (2).

(3) On control panel, close WATER PUMP circuit breaker.

(4) Remove, drain, and reinstall coffee makers in accordance with TO 13B6-5-1.

(5) Check potable tank sight gauge; when empty open WATER PUMP circuit breaker.

(6) Close tank valve (3).

(7) Disconnect faucet quick disconnect (4) and allow remaining water to drain.

(8) Connect faucet quick disconnect (4).

(9) Open tank valve (3).

(10) Close potable system drain hose valve (2).

(11) Stow potable system drain hose (1).

f. Remove electrical power from the ATGL.

Cap and seal all electrical wire ends connectors with suitable protective covering to prevent moisture saturation.

Failure to do so will result in damage to the ATGL.

g. Install danger tags on external power connectors.

3-3 LINE-REPLACEABLE UNIT AND INTERNAL

COMPONENT REMOVAL. See figure 3-2.

NOTE

The components listed below should be removed as required to facilitate other maintenance.

Remove the following Line-Replaceable Units (LRUs) and internal components per instructions in TO 13B4-4-1:

a. Galley lights (1), ballast, and adel clamps

b. Control panel (2) (contains terminal board one)
