Contractor Questions
Construct Catwalks in Building 238 at Hill AFB, UT
Invitation for Bid (IFB) No. FA8201-10-B-0002
1. Will we be provided electrical drawings, and what will be the procedure, if we have to re-route existing electrical conduits and associated wiring?
Answer: We can provide some original building electrical drawings, but I doubt they will be of little value in determining if an electrical line needs to be rerouted. It can be assumed the AE design would have noted any major obstacles in the contract drawings such as electrical lines, sprinkler pipes, etc. Ceiling suspension wires can be expected and are not considered a major obstacle.
2. Will we be provided Fire Sprinkler drawings, and what will be the procedure if we have to move any existing piping?
Answer: There are no detailed existing drawings for fire sprinkler systems. It can be assumed the AE design would have noted any major obstacles in the contract drawings such as electrical lines, sprinkler pipes, etc.
3. Is the Government still going to provide photos from above the existing sheetrock ceiling?
Answer: Photos were provided in IFB Amendment 0001 and posted to FEDBIZOPS.
4. Will there be another site visit, so we can bring our structural steel people in, and will a lift be provide by the government to gain access to see above the ceiling?
Answer: There will be no other site visit, and the Government will not provide a lift to gain access above the ceiling. Photos were provided in IFB Amendment 0001 and posted to FEDBIZOPS.
5. Is the system glycol or water?
Answer: The system is a "Glycol Heating Water" system
6. Is the system copper pipe or black?
Answer: Copper pipe shall be used
7. Are we to reuse existing valves, strainers, circuit setters, control valves ect?
Answer: All equipment shall be reused except for the supply and return valves for each VAV. Contractor will have to install new main valves at new relocation area for each VAV before unit is relocated.
8. How will outages be arranged, and how often can they be done?
Answer: Contractor shall address outages to the government project manager within 21 days prior to expected outage. .
9. Spec Section 05 12 00 – 5, Paragraph 1.4 – states that “work will be fabricated in an AISC certified category SDB fabrication plant.” There is inadequate space to install sections of pre-fabricated catwalk. We anticipate that pieces of beams, etc. will be lifted and bolted together in place. Pre-fabrication of all steel could also adversely impact the schedule. Can this AISC requirement be waived if we provide welding certifications and inspections?
Answer: The intent is to bolt them in place, and not pre-assemble sections of catwalk prior to hoisting into the attic space. All pre-fabricated steel should be fabricated in an approved facility. This would not apply to field-welded and field bolted connections (as shown in the drawings). Field welding does need to be done by an approved certified technician.
10. Sheet S502 – the details show threaded rod coming down from the existing girder to the catwalk. What is the elevation (height) of the existing girders in relation to the new catwalk?
Answer: Sheet S101 list reference elevation along the catwalk surface, which varies at different points along the catwalk. The level of two existing HVAC platforms are at the catwalk surface reference of 0’-0”. This existing HVAC platform surface coincides with the level of the bottom of the main roof trusses. The depth of a roof truss varies, but essentially is about 15’. The secondary roof members (which I assume the question refers to as existing girders) are at a 2’ depth. The attic photos will also give some perspective to this question of distance between girders and catwalk surface, see photos that were provided in IFB Amendment 0001 and posted to FEDBIZOPS.
11. Detail 3/S501 – shows an existing beam under the catwalk. What is the elevation (height) of the existing beams in relation to the new catwalk?
Answer: The top of the existing beam coincides with the HVAC platform (i.e., the platform surface rests on top of the existing beam. Refer to answer to Question No. 10 to determine height difference between catwalk surface and existing beam at that point.
12. Sheet S502 and S501 – the details on sheet S502 show the angle for the railing to be L2x2x5/16. On detail 3/S501, the angle for the railing is shown as L2x2x3/8.
What is the correct size of the angles for the railing?
Answer: For bidding purposes contractor should assume an angle of L2x2x3/8.
13. Detail 2/S503 shows the ladder with 1” standard pipe rungs and 3/8”x3” vertical stringers. Paragraph 2.3 of section 05 51 33 calls for ¾ inch rods for the rungs and 3/8”x2-1/2” vertical stringers. What is the correct specification for the ladders?
Answer: For bidding purposes the contractor should follow Detail 2/S503.
