MEAN TIME BETWEEN MAINTENANCE – TOTAL
Mean Time Between Maintenance-Total
(MTBM-T)
Mean Time Between Failure- Inherent (MTBF-Inherent) Type 1 Mean Time Between Failure-Induced (MTBF-Induced) Type 2 Mean Time Between Failure-No Defect (MTBF-No Defect) Type 6
NOTE: Component failures measured in hours.
System failures are measured in minutes.
MEAN TIME BETWEEN MAINTENANCE
Mean Time Between Maintenance (MTBM): A logistics reliability metric measuring average flying hours between maintenance events, with select MTBM parameters based on MAJCOM requirements (i.e., inherent malfunctions, induced malfunctions, no-defect events, etc). Reference AFI 10-602, A3.4, Logistics Reliability Measures. The MTBM formula is:
* “Selected Types” of maintenance events AMC recommends for RERP OT&E include Types 1, 2, & 6:
1 - Inherent Failures: e.g., Actual component fails due to reaching life limit.
2 - Induced Failure: e.g., System failure due to faulty software code.
6 - No Defects: e.g., Maintenance action resulting in component RTOK.
MEAN TIME BETWEEN MAINTENANCE – TOTAL
Mean Time Between Maintenance – Total (MTBM-T): TO 00-20-5 defines MTBM-T as:
* 1 - Inherent Failures
2 - Induced Failure
6 - No Defects
AMC RECOMMENDS MTBM-T AS THE MATERIEL RELIABILITY METRIC
MEAN TIME BETWEEN CRITICAL FAILURE
Mean Time Between Critical Failure (MTBCF): (AFI10-602) A weapon system reliability metric that measures average time between failures of mission-essential system functions. Critical failures occur when mission essential systems become inoperable or operate outside their specified range of performance. MTBCF includes critical failures of all hardware and software that occur during mission and non-mission time. MTBCF formula is:
MEAN TIME BETWEEN FAILURE – INHERENT (TYPE 1)
Mean Time Between Failure – Inherent (MTBF Inherent): The average flying time or operating time expended for an end item, system, subsystem, or component before failure occurs. The MTBF Inherent formula is the end item flying time or operating time multiplied by the quantity per application (QPA) divided by the Type 1.
Type-1 Failures are “Inherent” – an actual failure of the item. (Reference AFI 21-101_AMCSUP1 and AF TO 00-20-2)
MEAN TIME BETWEEN FAILURE – INDUCED (TYPE 2)
Mean Time Between Failure – Induced (MTBF – Induced): The average flying time or operating time expended for an end item, system, subsystem, or component before failure occurs. The MTBF Induced formula is the end item flying time or operating time multiplied by the quantity per application (QPA) divided by the Type 2.
Type-2 Failures are “Induced” – a failure that’s neither inherent or considered no defect. (Reference AFI 21-101_AMCSUP1 and AF TO 00-20-2)
MEAN TIME BETWEEN FAILURE – NO DEFECT (TYPE 6)
Mean Time Between Failure – No Defect (MTBF – No Defect): The average flying time or operating time expended for an end item, system, subsystem, or component before failure occurs. The MTBF – No Defect formula is the end item flying time or operating time multiplied by the quantity per application (QPA) divided by the Type 6.
Type-6 failure is “No Defect”, a failure that’s not inherent or induced. Reference AFI 21-101_AMCSUP1 and AF TO 00-20-2.
