CHAPTER 1
ORGANIZATIONAL MAINTENANCE MANUAL SET
1.1 MAINTENANCE MANUAL SET ARRANGEMENT.
The maintenance manual set is divided into general and specific coverage of the equipment and systems to provide usable and complete maintenance at the organizational level. The General Equipment manual will serve to indoctrinate and familiarize maintenance personnel with the equipment and system. System maintenance personnel can improve their knowledge of the system by using the General System manual, and by using the step-by-step procedural instructions found in the Job Guide manual. The manual set is divided as set forth in the following paragraphs.
1.1.1 General Equipment Manual. The General Equipment (GE) manual provides an overview of the organizational maintenance manual set, explains the interrelation of the technical order/numbering system between manuals, provides an overall equipment description with a summary of all systems and subsystems, and presents general information on ground handling and servicing of the equipment. The manual is arranged in chapters, each of which addresses one or more of the above subjects. The manual also contains maintenance instructions that are general in nature (applicable to more than one system) and not suitable for job guide format.
The manual is used for maintenance personnel to gain a general knowledge and understanding of the overall equipment and systems.
1.1.2 General System Manual. The General System (GS) manual provides detailed system, subsystem, and sub-subsystem description, theory of operation, and maintenance support information not suitable for job guide format. Each manual is arranged in sections with system/subsystem coverage aligned to agree with Job Guide manual coverage. The manual presents the purpose, type, main features, and supporting data for the item being covered. Additionally, each manual contains a listing of support equipment, special tools, and a listing of supplies (consumables) applicable to the system covered.
1.1.3 Job Guide Manual. The Job Guide (JG) manual provides complete start-to-finish maintenance instructions for technicians performing maintenance functions on specific items. The instructions include removal and installation procedures and operational checkouts, alignment, adjustment, and calibration procedures. The JG manual contains removal and installation procedures and other subsystem/sub-subsystem level operational checkout, adjustment, and alignment procedures. Input conditions and follow-on maintenance entries for multitask functions are coded, in parentheses, to indicate the last digit(s) of the paragraph number(s) affected.
This code appears at the beginning of the entry. When necessary, due to multi task functions, the support equipment and supplies (consumables) under input conditions are coded 1, 2, 3, etc. The codes are used to stipulate equipment and supply usage. For example, code (1) indicates usage when performing the first task, and code (1, 3) indicates usage when performing the first and third tasks. Uncoded items are used in all tasks. Fault Isolation manual codes are shown in parentheses following the appropriate procedural step RESULT statement.
1.1.4 Fault Isolation Manual. The Fault Isolation (FI) manual is one of a set or manuals providing organizational maintenance instructions for the equipment. The FI manual is used in conjunction with JG manual.
The FI manual provides fault identification, description, and isolation procedures for the system.
1.1.4.1 Fault system malfunctions are those that conform to the following considerations:
a. Faults which are detectable when equipment is not operating shall be covered.
b. Faults which are observed while the equipment is operating shall be covered.
c. Faults shall not be covered if they require the use of support equipment.
d. In determining what faults are observable, it shall be assumed that the equipment is in a normal operational condition and that all pre-operation conditions have been met.
1-2
1.1.4.2 The FI manual provides technical information required to fault isolate a detected fault within the system.
Each fault isolation procedure terminates with fault correction or reference to a schematic diagram.
1.1.4.3 The system failure information contained in the manual is based upon malfunction analysis of equipment prior to delivery. Failure information gained from experience will be added to the FI manual as the information becomes available.
NOTE
The effectiveness of the FI manual after initial distribution to the user, to a large extent, is dependent upon operation and maintenance personnel who are active participants in the program and who are actively using the FI manual.
1.1.4.4 The fault diagnostic logic information appears in the body of the page in blockflow form. This form identifies the fault as well as relevant conditions leading to a specific eleven-character numeric-alphanumeric code.
1.1.4.5 The FI manual provides the conditions existing at the time the fault occurred and/or, when applicable, a cross-reference listing from self-test degree of severity and test number failed to a fault code. The user may follow the known conditions flow ending at the right side of the page to obtain the fault code. When a fault code has been established from the JG manual, fault identification and description is not provided.
As an example, a complete fault code would appear on a fault identification page as follows:
33-26-100-C1ZZZ
The fault code elements are broken down as follows:
33 - 26 - 100 - C1ZZZ
Fault Identifier
Sub-subsystem:
Power Supply Control
Subsystem:
Power Supply
System:
TACAN
Navigation Set
The first and second digits are the system numbers.
The third and fourth digits are the subsystem numbers.
The fifth, sixth, and seventh digits are the sub-subsystem numbers representing the appropriate Line
Replaceable Unit (LRU). The number is assigned for various drawer assemblies in the subsystem.
The eighth through the twelfth digits are used to identify a specific fault with a system/subsystem/sub-subsystem.
1.1.4.6 Access and locator data provide the means and location for gaining access to components except where obvious. This information is provided in either illustrated, written, or a combination of the two forms and immediately follows the fault identification and description page. A locator view of the access door or panel for
1-3 access to circuit breaker panels, identified on the fault identification and description page(s) when applicable, is included in the access and locator data.
1.1.4.7 The user will find the fault isolation procedure for the required fault code on the appropriate fault isolation procedure flow chart. The fault code is followed by a series of action instructions contained in rectangular blocks with the monitored results of the actions outside of the block. These actions terminate with instructions for further fault analysis or repair. The action blocks also contain any required reference to locator data, or job guide functions in parenthesis.
a. When identified faults have identical fault isolation procedures but are not in alphabetical sequence, the corrective action block refers to the fault code that has the isolation procedure (i.e., REFER TO FAULT
CODE 33-26-100 A1ZZZ).
b. When supplemental data is required to support fault isolation procedures, additional information is provided in the form of tables and/or supporting illustrations.
1.1.5 Schematic Diagrams Manual. The Schematic Diagrams (SD) manual provides schematic diagrams in sufficient detail to allow maintenance personnel to understand the troubleshooting process and system operation and also to assist in establishing troubleshooting procedures for faults not eliminated through use of the fault isolation procedures.
1.1.6 Reference Designator. The reference designator is the identifier assigned to the following types of components found on a sub-subsystem assembly: relay matrices, relays, panels, circuit breakers, connectors, terminal strips, actuators, switches, sensors, pumps, valves, instruments, etc. The designator is composed of the functional system number, subsystem number, sub-subsystem number, equipment class letters, and unit number identifier (e.g., 33-05-100 TB1 identifies TACAN system 33, transponder group subsystem 05, EMI filter sub-subsystem 100, terminal board TB1). The same reference designator is used throughout the organizational maintenance manual set to identify the same component parts; therefore, the number is found in the FI, JG, and SD manuals.
1.1.7 Illustrated Parts Breakdown. The Illustrated Parts Breakdown (IPB) manual is sectionalized to coincide with the organizational maintenance manual set. The manual is arranged as follows:
Chapter 1 IPB Introduction
Chapter 2 IPB Maintenance Parts List
Chapter 3 IPB Numerical Index
1.1.8 Maintenance Manual Set Technical Order Numbering System. The numbering system illustrated is utilized to provide easy recognition of the different types of manuals that make up the maintenance manual set:

1.1.9 System/Subsystem/Sub-Subsystem Numbering System. The numbering system used to identify organizational maintenance manuals provides a means of dividing and identifying data into system, subsystem, and sub-subsystems. Using the TACAN power supply control as an example, the system/subsystem/sub-subsystem number is 33-26-100.
The first and second digits are the system number, which represents system 33 (TACAN). The third and fourth digits are the subsystem number, which represent subsystem 26 (power supply). The fifth, sixth, and seventh number digits are the sub-subsystem numbers, which represent sub-subsystem 100 (control).

CHAPTER 3
EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION
3.1 GENERAL DESCRIPTION.
The TACAN Navigational Set is a multi channel transponder whose purpose is to provide bearing and distance information of up to 200 nautical miles. Control of the system is possible via a Personal Computer located in both the environmentally controlled shelter and Remote Maintenance Work Center (RMWC). START/STOP and STATUS monitoring capabilities are provided by a control indicator, which is located in the Air Traffic Control (ATC) facility.
3.2 PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION.
The TACAN Navigational Set consists of a complete Tactical Air Navigation (TACAN) system. The transponder group is housed in an environmentally controlled shelter and the antenna is mounted outside the shelter (see Figure 3-1). Control of the system is possible via PCs located in both the shelter and RMWC, or from a control indicator located in the ATC facility. Refer to Table 3-1 for capabilities and limitations.
3.2.1 TACAN Shelter. A typical shelter consists of an approximately 27 foot by 15 foot (8.2 meters by 4.6 meters) cement or wood enclosure which includes the following equipment. Refer to Table 3-2 for capabilities and limitations.
3.2.1.1 Transponder Group (33-05-000). (See Figure 3-2) The transponder group provides an enclosure for each of the slide-mounted drawers. The top rear panel of the cabinet is a bulkhead for the following connections.
RF input/output, north and auxiliary trigger pulse inputs (not used), RF sample 2J2, status/trigger/control (OE- 537/FRN Antenna Group) and PC interface. The bottom portion of the rear panel houses a detachable connector plate for AC power input access. Two terminal blocks are on the left interior side panel; one is for remote communication and fiber optic signal interface and the other is for AC and DC power connections. The front bottom panel accommodates a grounding type duplex convenience outlet and an accessory equipment circuit breaker.
3.2.1.1.1 Power supply (33-26-000). (See Figure 3-3). The power supply is contained in a slide-mounted aluminum drawer, 9-1/4 inches (23.5 cm) high, which permits easy access for maintenance, testing, and adjustments. All inputs and outputs are on the rear panel of the supply. The printed circuit board is mounted in a card bay with edge guides. The plug-in board is a dual-sided printed circuit with plated-through holes and keyed 48-pin connector.
3.2.1.1.2 Transponder (33-35-000). (See Figure 3-4). The transponder is housed in a 10-1/2 inch (26.7 cm) high aluminum drawer-type chassis, which fits into the transponder group equipment rack. Retractable locking slides and handles provide access to the chassis interior. Printed circuit boards are mounted in a card bay with edge guides. The plug-in boards are dual-sided printed circuits with plated-through holes and keyed 48-pin and 72-pin connectors. Test points and adjustable components are located at the top of each board to allow field-service troubleshooting and alignment with boards in place. Card ejectors provide ease of board removal. The remainder of the assemblies are easily replaced modules held in place by quick disconnect fasteners and have multi-pin connectors. Interconnecting cables are of sufficient length to allow access to modules for maintenance.
Extender cards stored inside the drawer may be used to extend plug-in cards for maintenance.
3.2.1.1.3 Radio Frequency Amplifier (RFA) (33-37-000). (See Figure 3-5). The RFA is housed in a 24-1/2 inch (62.2 cm) high aluminum drawer-type chassis, which fits into the standard 19-inch (48.3 cm) transponder group equipment rack. Retractable locking slides and handles provide access to the RFA chassis interior. All input and output connectors are on the chassis rear panel. The eight identical 700 watt amplifiers are plug-in type and may be replaced without extending the chassis. They are held in place by two thumbscrew fasteners. Self-aligning, quick-disconnect cable connectors provide video and RF connections to the 700 watt amplifiers.
