INTRODUCTION
1. PURPOSE. This manual provides organizational maintenance instructions for the TACAN Navigational Set.
The Fault Isolation (FI) manual is used in conjunction with the Job Guide (JG) manual and Schematic Diagram (SD), as applicable. This FI provides fault identification, description, and isolation procedures for the TACAN Navigational Set.
2. SCOPE. This manual provides technical information required to fault isolate a detected fault within the system.
Each fault isolation procedure terminates with fault correction or reference to a schematic diagram or another system fault isolation section for further fault analysis.
3. The system failure information contained in this manual is based upon malfunction analysis of equipment as delivered. Failure information gained from experience will be added to this manual as the information becomes available.
NOTE
The effectiveness of this FI manual after initial distribution to the user, to a large extent, is dependent upon operations and maintenance personnel who are active participants in the program and who are actually using this manual.
4. ARRANGEMENT OF THIS MANUAL. This manual contains front matter and sections as follows:
FRONT MATTER -The front matter consists of title page, list of effective pages, table of contents, list of illustrations, alphabetical index, and introduction containing purpose, scope, arrangement, use, nonstandard abbreviations, change recommendations, record of applicable time compliance technical orders (TCTO’s), and safety summary.
EACH SECTION - Provides fault identification and description, access and locator data, fault isolation, and supplemental data for each system and is arranged as follows:
Fault Identification and Description
Access and Locator Data
Fault Isolation Procedures
Supplemental Data
5. USE OF THIS MANUAL. Section one contains procedures for collecting initial fault isolation data. The data collected is used with tables in Section two to select proper identification and description flow charts contained in sections three through nine.
Section two contains fault isolation code tables. The fault code elements are broken down in this section.
Sections three through nine contain general and specific fault identification and description flow charts. These charts are used to isolate faults to specific LRU. Illustrations of component locations and test points are also provided.
The user will find the fault isolation procedure for the required fault code on the appropriate fault isolation flow chart. Each fault code is followed by a series of action instructions contained in rectangular blocks with the monitored results of the actions outside the blocks. These actions terminate with instructions for further fault analysis or repair.
The action blocks also contain any required reference to locator data, job guide function or schematic diagrams (SD) in parenthesis. One isolation procedure may be used for several coded faults in order to reduce redundancy.
When supplemental data is required to support fault isolation procedures, additional information is provided in the form of tables, written text, and/ or supporting illustrations. This information is included in each applicable section.
6. NONSTANDARD ABBREVIATION. The following nonstandard abbreviations are used in this manual: NONE.
7. CHANGE RECOMMENDATIONS. Recommendations concerning changes to this FI shall be submitted IAW T.O.
00-5-1.
8. RECORD OF APPLICABLE TIME COMPLIANCE
TECHNICAL ORDERS (TCTO’S). The following chart sets forth the TCTO’s that are applicable to the fault reporting codes in this manual:

9. SAFETY SUMMARY. General safety notices:
Keep Away From Live Circuits. Always observe safety rules.
Do not repair the equipment when the power is on, unless necessary. Always turn off the power before touching any circuits. Before making adjustments remove all jewelry. make adjustments with one hand and keep the other away from the equipment.
Do Not Service or Adjust Alone. Do not enter an area to service or adjust the equipment at any time unless another person is present.
Resuscitation. Anyone working with or near high voltages should know modern methods of resuscitation. These methods may be learned at the base hospital or at local medical facilities and T.O. 31-1-141-1.
First Aid. Seek medical help immediately after injury. Any injury, however slight, should be treated.
WARNINGS AND CAUTIONS
Ensure that all circuit breakers and power switches mounted on or connected to transponder group are OFF before checking wiring connections.
Use extreme care when working with the transponder group, transponder and radio frequency amplifier. Careless handling of metal tools can short out the 65 VDC, 25 ampere power source and result in death or serious injury. Before removing or installing any equipment in the rack, turn off all external power sources to the Transponder Group.
Lead soldering generates lead oxide fumes.
Avoid breathing the fumes generated by soldering. Do not flip solder off the soldering iron. The hot solder can cause severe burns.
Voltage measurements are taken with respect to +65 VDC. If an oscilloscope or AC powered instrument is used, the instrument must be isolated from AC ground or damage to the equipment will result
Electrostatic discharge sensitive (ESDS) devices are used in this assembly. Static electricity can damage these devices. Special handling methods and materials must be used to pre-vent damage. Do not touch or remove any ESDS device or any assembled circuit board that has an ESDS device without properly grounding your body, test equipment, and all tools. Be thoroughly familiar with the handling procedures specified in T.O. 00-25-234 and T.O. 31-1-141-1. Move or store assembled circuit boards only in conductive (anti-static) bags. Do not touch the printed circuits or the connector pins on the board; handle the board by the edges only. Keep the pins of an ESDS device shorted together whenever possible; use a device shorting bus, a shorting tube, or conductive foam.
Avoid excessive bending of semi rigid cables, otherwise they may be permanently damaged.
Ensure that the transponder group antenna connector is connected to an antenna or high power termination prior to performing any of the following tests.
