SECTION II – PROJECT DETAILS
II-1 Project Description
The Michigan Department of Corrections – Parnall Correctional Facility will be renovating an existing building and constructing a new addition to house both the New Heavy Diesel Program and two (2) relocated skilled trades programs being the Automotive Repair and Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Programs.
The existing building (known as the Radio Building or Building 300 is approximately 12,872 square feet and will be completely renovated both interior and exterior. The existing building section will house classrooms, lab areas, tool cribs, state offices and support services including restrooms, mechanical rooms, electrical rooms, and storage areas.
The new addition is approximately 5,563 square feet and will sit along the east side of the existing building. The new addition section will house the truck high bay area, tool crib, and receiving areas.
Site improvements will consist of paving, sidewalks, landscape, perimeter security elements (fencing, cameras, detection, and gates), and demolition work (existing gatehouse, existing pole barn and miscellaneous minor adjacent structures).
Relocation of the existing Automotive Repair and Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) training programs (currently located within Building 31within the secure perimeter) will be part of the project scope.
It is the intent to phase the construction project to perform the majority of the construction activities while the existing building site remains outside of the secure perimeter. Once the building is “completed” the perimeter security fencing adjustments can then be made bringing the “completed” building within the secure perimeter. The relocation of the secure perimeter near the end of construction activities will significantly reduce the construction requirements.
