About this file

This document is a Structural Fire Deficiency Log for the National Park Service, detailing fire protection system issues across multiple buildings in the BEPA (Bering Land Bridge National Preserve) park in Alaska. The log records 12 specific deficiencies identified in 2023 across different locations including a Maintenance Auto Shop, Duplex buildings, Tok Bunk House, and Bear Park Visitor Center. Deficiencies span multiple systems such as sprinkler systems (SP), fire pumps (FP), backflow preventers (BP), and fire alarms (FA), with recommended repairs ranging from replacing gauges and test cocks to addressing fire pump water leakage and low alarm bell signage. Total estimated repair costs for these deficiencies amount to approximately $25,450, with the most expensive repair being an $18,000 fire pump repair at the Bear Park Visitor Center. The log includes detailed technical observations, references to NFPA standards, and recommendations for specialized technical intervention.

2023 BEPA 1234 Maintenance Auto Shop SP 1437 Whole System

(Fire Pump) Flow from one sprinkler does not turn on.

Adjust fire pump start pressure (nps would not allow stating fire pump activation causes flooding of c-camp cabins)

Deficiency also noted in fire pump report with additional information noted. NPS

2023 BEPA 1234 Maintenance Auto Shop FP 1437 Controller Set point for pump to turn on is too low.

(nps staff would not allow adjusting this) -turn up fire pump psi start pressure so systems are properly supplied.

NFPA 20 or NFPA 25 Reference: 8.1.1

FPE Comment: Concur with finding. In order for a fire pump to start automatically from a single sprinkler head operating with minimal delay, the fire pump start pressure should be 10-15 psi (max) lower than the static pressure in the sprinkler system.
