About this file

This is a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) document for implementing Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in Child Development Centers (CDC) at Fort Riley. The SOP establishes procedures for both government and contract personnel involved in pest control activities within CDC facilities, with a focus on protecting children while maintaining effective pest management.

The document outlines specific requirements including: 24-hour advance notification to staff and parents before pesticide applications; restrictions on herbicide use in areas accessible to children; use of non-mechanical traps for rodent control in modules; and detailed signage requirements during applications with minimum 7-hour re-entry times for students. The Directorate of Public Works is responsible for preparing and monitoring the IPM plan, while CDC personnel must handle parent notifications and mechanical weed control. Exemptions from notification requirements include common disinfectants, sealed bait stations, and soap/water treatments for stinging insects. Emergency applications require immediate phone notification to registered parents/guardians.

2. The use of IPM dictates a comprehensive approach be used to control pests within the

CDC. Cultural, mechanical, physical and chemical controls will be implemented to effect control of pests. Whenever possible, chemical controls will be used to the least extent possible and notification of parents will be conducted prior to actual application of pesticides, usually 24 hours prior to application. Parents requesting notification shall receive written notification (a memorandum sent via their child and/or other notification mechanisms defined by the CDC).

3. Rodents have not been an issue at the CDC in the past. Should rodents be indicated in the future, only non-mechanical traps, inaccessible to children, will be used to trap rodents within the modules. Mechanical traps may be utilized in service areas, eg mechanical rooms, but they may not contain any bait that is toxic to humans or domestic animals.

B. EXEMPTIONS: This plan provides for exemptions from notification for the following classes of chemicals:
