The Park Pecos National Historical Park (PECO) is located just south of Pecos, New Mexico, and southeast of Santa Fe. The park was initially formed as a state monument in 1935. In 1965, the park was established as a national monument. A large addition, consisting primarily of ranchland and archeological sites, greatly expanded the size of PECO and it was renamed as a National Historical Park in 1990.
PECO is also in the process of redesigning the exhibits in the E. E. Fogelson Visitor Center.
The design of that project is slightly ahead of the Trading Post project. While at the kickoff meeting, EDX confirmed with the park that the two designs do not need to relate to each other in terms of content or visuals, but that we will continue to be mindful of the project in general as we progress. The visitor center project will touch on some of the themes covered in the trading post exhibits but will not go in depth on them.
Design Parameters The exhibits will be designed to interpret multiple perspectives as dictated by the interpretive themes. They will be designed to be engaging, interactive, and appealing to visitors with different learning styles. Exhibits will also include minimal outdoor interpretation and orientation signage.
The trading post exhibits will be designed so that the building can be unstaffed. Designs include a desk in the exhibit space as there will sometimes be staff in the space, but exhibits will be self-guided for visitors. As a result, exhibits will be designed to be low-maintenance and free of artifacts.
The trading post is a historic building. The contractual scope of work states (in italics):
Please note that the Kozlowski’s Trading Post is on the National Register and is considered a historic building and exhibits shall not be affixed to the walls or Vigas (ceiling beams).
Currently the building is undergoing a rehabilitation project that will convert the old trading post/ranch into a mixed-use space which will include offices, community meeting room, and visitor contact station.
Update in April 2021:
• EDX designs in PDI deliverable reflect ongoing direction by the Park/HFC to affix exhibit elements to the floor and ceiling only where absolutely necessary.
• Exhibit lighting has been designed/installed by others to integrate with the existing structure.
• Elements do not attach to walls or Vigas (ceiling beams).
• Walls will be painted white, with blue trim around doors and windows.
• All changes due to exhibits will be reversible.
• Designs should be sympathetic to and inspired by the architecture of the building.
Because this park has both a visitor center and the trading post as interpretive facilities, the trading post exhibits can take advantage of the interest that visitors show in choosing to come to this building. The exhibits can be more character-based and building-specific.
Project Budget The Contractual Scope of Work defines the project budget and scope as follows (in italics):
For this project, the contractor shall design to a Production Budget of $396,025.
The Production Budget shall include:
• All costs for purchasing, fabricating, transporting, and installing all exhibit elements as specified in the “National Park Service Standard Exhibit Planning, Design, & Fabrication Specifications, October 2012” and its references.
• Related fabrication costs including but not limited to project management, shop drawings, samples, packing, shipping, and project closeout.
• Production of original audiovisual and electronic interactive programs.
• Production of original artwork including, but not limited to, illustrations, maps, and photographs.
• Acquisition of all pre-existing images required for the exhibition, including use- rights for the life of the exhibition.
• Production or acquisition of all custom elements including, but not limited to, natural history models, taxidermy, reproduction furnishings, topographic maps, architectural models, sculpted or cast human figures.
• Production of the Exhibit Audio Description program including script development, and hardware purchase and installation.
• Information/Sales Desk.
The Production Budget does not include:
• Related infrastructure improvements such as carpet, paint, lighting and electrical wiring.
The Scope of Work defines the design areas as follows (in italics):
1. Primary Exhibit Spaces
Consisting of approximately 1,343 total square feet, exhibit spaces shall be low-to-moderately complex interpretive exhibits that use appropriate technologies, provide interactive opportunities, allow visitors to engage in the story at different levels, appeal to different learning styles and ages, and allow for visitors to actively participate in learning the history and significance of PECO.
The design area will include some outdoor interpretive exhibits and signage, per the Scope of Work. At the kickoff meeting, park staff expressed a need for clear signage outside of the building, including the need to make it clear to visitors that the trading post is not the main visitor center for the park.
This project budget works out to an average of $295/sf. This is a relatively low figure for NPS exhibits and costs are currently rising relatively quickly. The need for very durable exhibits necessitated by the unstaffed nature of the building adds an additional layer of cost.
Design Process So Far / Next Steps This Production Documents I package describes the preferred alternative scheme for the key functions of the Trading Post and related exhibits. It includes graphic layouts with text and perspective views/visualizations. Please review this package together with the corresponding PDI Drawing set, Reference Package, Cost Estimate and Materials Board.
Note that component numbers are included in both this package (in plan views) and in more exact locations in the Drawing Set (in elevations in most cases, unless the component only appears in plan).
Note that all images shown in graphics are “for placement only” and show the image content EDX proposes. With approval of the designs, EDX will research images that can be used in graphics.
EDX will present this document to client representatives the week of April 5-9, 2021 (pending confirmation from NPS). The goal of the presentation will be to confirm the current design direction and compile feedback and information to assist in the next phase of design.
Project Goals These goals were generated during sessions at the kickoff meeting. EDX asked participants to imagine specific examples of experiences that they would like visitors to have in the exhibits. Below are the products of that work. Not all of the goals are within the scope of work of this project but we believe it is important to consider how this project fits within and contributes to the broader overall visitor experience.
The Trading Post exhibits will…
• Provide opportunities to interpret the Santa Fe Trail
• Provide opportunities to interpret the Federal victory in the Civil War
• Provide opportunities to interpret the Forked Lightning Ranch
• Provide opportunities to interpret the architecture of the building
• Orient visitors to local area and opportunities
• Generate interest in and increase awareness of opportunities for ranger-led programs
• Provide opportunities for younger audiences, most notably kids
• Have flexible space (introductory space for recreational opportunities, potential for staff desk and greeting space)
• Be fun! Interactive, less academic, makes visitors want to come back.
Visitors will be able to…
• Connect to the Pecos River and Glorieta Pass
• Understand how landscape played into successes and failures
• Flesh out themes not covered by the VC museum
• Realize how many stories and how much history happened here
• Experience a historic structure and understand its significance/changes
• Extend interest beyond basic knowledge
Background & Introduction
Production Documents I | April 5, 20214 Pecos National Historical Park Trading Post
Interpretive Framework
Exhibit “Big Idea” EDX has found the generation of a main message or “Big Idea” to be an important part of the exhibit design process.
Western American history unfolded in and around this building, shaped by the surrounding land.
The characters making that history often lived, worked, and rested right here.
Interpretive Themes The task order for this project states that the themes will be:
1. Park-wide Orientation
2. Civil War-Battle of Glorieta Pass
3. Santa Fe Trail
4. Ranching
5. Forked Lightning Ranch
These themes were confirmed at the kickoff meeting, with the Forked Lightning Ranch being seen as a part of the overall Ranching theme. EDX also reviewed all of the themes listed in the park’s Foundation Document to confirm the focus of the trading post exhibits. Once the themes were finalized, EDX led an exercise at the kickoff meeting to establish the relative importance, or weight, of these different themes.
Note on Images Throughout the graphics, you’ll notice some images are labeled to indicate the acquisition status. Below are the explanations for the labels.
1. Custom Illustration by Fabricator: Images with this label are placeholder only. They are meant to show the look/feel and placement of the illustration but are not final content.
It is the responsibility of the fabricator to commission these illustrations. See reference package for details on style, composition, and content.
2. Placeholder Image: Images with this label are placeholders that show where the image will appear on the panel but are not final image selections. A “Note to Park” accompanies these images and lists specific questions about image selection for the park.
3. All other images are final selections that EDX hopes to acquire, please make a note if any images are not approved.
Please see the database and reference package for more details about specific images.
Style Guide For Specific Words
• Adobe: a kind of clay used as a building material, typically in the form of sun-dried bricks.
• American Indian: NPS style guide; names of tribes where possible. Also okay to use “indigenous”
• Anglo: Use to describe ethnicity of New Mexicans who are European American and white.
• Hispano: Use to describe ethnicity of New Mexicans who are related to Spanish settlers in the Southwest before it was annexed to the United States. Do not use Hispanic or Latino/x.
• Glorieta Pass: one “t”!
• Kozlowski’s Trading Post: do not use.
• Kozlowski, Elena: use this spelling, per Becky Latanich email 03.02.20
• Kozlowski, Martin: use this spelling, per Becky Latanich email 03.02.20
• Kozlowski children: Martin, Hanna, Joseph, Thomas, and William
• piñon: use for Pinus edulis
• ranch headquarters: use this to refer to the building during the Tex Austin period
• stage stop: use this to refer to the building during era of Santa Fe Trail. Be clear about its use: stage stop where people could get needed supplies
• Trading Post: Per August 2019 meeting, park agreed to use this term to refer to building itself. It will be marked this way on maps, etc. Not Kozlowski’s Trading Post. (It was named this in the 1920s.)
• Union: use instead of Federalist to describe Union side in Civil War.
• Viga: wooden beams used in the traditional adobe architecture.
Accessibility Narrative All aspects of the design will be developed to fully comply with physical and programmatic accessibility strategies.
Accessibility strategies will include but are not limited to:
• Universal design of the physical environment including adherence to ADA/ABA requirements.
• Incorporation of meaningful tactile elements to bring the story alive for visitors with low vision and blindness while also providing an engaging experience for all visitors.
For visitors with cognitive differences:
Exhibits provide multiple methods of obtaining information using a hierarchy of content within interpretive panels. Large, clear illustrations, large summary titles and summary headings with minimal text, and appropriate tactile elements communicate to diverse audiences including non-readers or those with limited reading ability or attention spans, visitors who do not speak English, and visitors with cognitive differences.
For visitors with low vision and blindness:
Audio description will be available for all exhibit elements.
Exhibit text will have a high level of legibility with a minimum 70% contrast ratio, easy-to-read fonts, minimum 24 pt type size, accessible viewing distance and height, and adequate light level.
Primary exhibit content will be contained within a range between 40” and 60” above the floor to allow visitors with low vision to gain close scrutiny for easier reading. Font-size adjustments for readability will be made for titles and other written elements that fall outside of this zone.
Tactile elements communicate key concepts through touch.
For visitors with physical disabilities:
Exhibit layout will provide accessible circulation and clearance.
Exhibits are designed with a minimum 5’ turning radius for wheelchair users within any dead-end spaces. Tactile elements are mounted on a reading rail with 27” clear height below for front wheelchair access. The 27” height also makes it discoverable by visitors with blindness using a cane. All exhibit elements conform to ADA/ABA and NPS Accessibility Guidelines for physical accessibility.
For visitors with hearing impairments:
There will be no audio components of these exhibits.

Characters The stories of real people are integral to the Trading Post exhibits.
The characters that EDX has proposed in this package are drawn from collaboration with the park.
The design scheme includes major and minor characters. Major characters are represented through graphic cut-outs and have more prominence. Minor characters are integrated into two-dimensional graphics. The characters are:
Major Characters:
Scene 04: Elena Kozlowski
Scene 04: Martin Kozlowski
Scene 05: New Mexico Volunteer, Francisco Abreu
Scene 06: Tex Austin
Scene 06: Buddy Fogelson
Scene 06: Greer Garson
Minor Characters:
Scene 03: Santa Fe Trail kids: Carlos Armijo and Marian Sloan Russell
Scene 05: Wounded Union Soldier: Captain Samuel H. Cook
Scene 06: Rosie Ortiz (worked for Greer Garson 20+ years)
Interpretive Framework
Major characters will be shown as illustrated graphic cut-outs.
See reference package for illustration style details.
Minor character imagery will appear two dimensionally as part of graphic panels
Trading in Santa Fe Carlos Armijo
Running a business on the Santa Fe Trail often involved the whole family. Carlos
Armijo helped his parents run their store, Chick, Armijo, and Co. They sold supplies and trade goods for travelers to take east on the trail to Missouri and beyond.

Wounded in Battle— Union Captain Samuel H. Cook
Cook was wounded at Apache Canyon in the Battle of Glorieta Pass when
“some nearby Texan emptied a ‘buck and ball’ charge into the officer’s thigh.” He survived his wounds and was probably treated in this building.
Martin Kozlowski 1827–1905
Martin arrived here when he was 31.
He’d already had a busy life—born in
Poland, he fought Prussians, fled to
England, immigrated, and soldiered in the US Calvary.
He grazed sheep and cattle at his family’s stage stop and ranch along the Pecos River. During the Civil War, Martin opened their home as a hospital for local Union troops.
He was short and stout, with the build of a gladiator, and feared neither man, devil, nor tax collector.
—Jim Carter, Santa Fe Trail traveler
Eileen Evelyn Greer Garson 1904–1996
Born and raised in Britain, Garson became a leading Hollywood star, winning an Academy Award in the
1940s. More than a talented actress, Garson challenged twentieth-century female stereotypes as a rancher, cattle breeder, and philanthropist.
She recalled her first visit to the ranch:
I was dressed in an organdy dress, light blue, with high-heeled blue shoes and a huge willowy picture hat. I was so surprised. I thought it would be a farm with a picket fence and a duck pond and maybe a pony. I was immediately struck by the color of the earth, the sky, and the people….I felt so fragile and uncomfortable in that vast, rugged land.

Trading Post This brightly colored building has had many functions: stage stop on the Santa Fe Trail, Civil War hospital, dude ranch headquarters, and now a place to experience history.
Natural springs flow from sandstone rock nearby. This made the area an attractive place for immigrants Elena and Martin Kozlowski to set up their Santa Fe Trail stage stop.

In the midst of the Civil War, this building transformed from stage stop to Union Army field hospital after the Battle of Glorieta Pass.
Rodeo promoter Tex Austin expanded the original building, using it as the headquarters for his dude ranch, the Forked Lightning Ranch.

What’s Outside the Window
Geography plays a big role in why this building is here. Nearby Glorieta
Creek provided water for the original
Kozlowski stage stop. Glorieta Mesa rises steeply along the southern horizon. To the west is Glorieta Pass, historically the most direct route between Santa Fe and the high plains.
This stretch of New Mexico Highway 63 between
Pecos and Rowe parallels the old Santa Fe Trail.
This photo is from 1925, when the road was part of the original US Route 66.
Wagon ruts made more than 150 years ago run right to this building. They’re easier to see from the air—like in this photo—than on the ground.
The 30-mile-long Glorieta Mesa marks the transition between the Southern
Rocky Mountains and the Great Plains.

Building in Stages
Locally made adobe bricks form the walls of this building.
Feel the sun-dried mud and embedded straw.
These rooms have taken shape over the last 150 years.
They’ve been a family home, a place of hospitality, a hospital, and ranch headquarters.
At first the building was very small.
The Kozlowski family of eight lived in 550 square feet.
The size of the building more than doubled during this time.
Dude ranch owner Tex Austin greatly expanded the building to use it as the headquarters for his Forked Lightning Ranch.
Ranch owners Buddy Fogelson and Greer Garson added a gate and porches.

Vigas, Vibrant Colors, Adobe Bricks
Adobe bricks form these walls. Builders combined dirt, water, clay, sand, and sometimes straw to create the bricks for this building. The photo above shows adobe brick-makers at Pecos in 1915.
VigAs (pronounced vee-ghas) are wood ceiling beams. They are the primary supports for roofs in adobe construction. Look up and you’ll see some.
blue And pink paint colors were Greer Garson’s choice when she spent summers at the Forked Lightning Ranch in the 1960s.
This adobe building has many stories to tell. One way researchers learn about the history of a structure is by looking closely at the original construction materials.
