EXHIBIT NARRATIVE
Key Directives Key park directives have informed the design, and continue to be good benchmarks to consult to ensure that we are achieving the goals we set out for ourselves:
• The exhibit should unfold chronologically.
• The visitor experience should begin in the landscape today, but in a timeless way.
• Broadly speaking, some 70% of the exhibit should focus on the Pueblo and Church stories, with the remainder exploring the Civil War, Santa Fe Trail, and Forked Lightning Ranch.
In addition to these items, we are working on some key assumptions for the design, based on our conversations with the park:
• A compelling “Wow” experience to pull visitors into the exhibit room is critical.
• Immersive scenic recreations are a powerful means of telling the story to a wide variety of visitors.
• Interactivity and meaningful high-level concepts (told with precision) are more important than communicating fine details. A text-heavy exhibit is NOT desired.
• Objects matter—they should be used thoughtfully, and we can display them in large volume if we do so meaningfully.
THE BIG IDEA
Put yourself in Pecos history. Immerse yourself in the geography of the Upper Pecos Valley and discover how this unique landscape shaped history and how history shaped the landscape as people and their values collided/ intersected here over an unusually long period of time and with such national significant results.
KEY FACTORS
Intellectual Outcomes
Understanding the evolution of the site and the intersections here, shaped by and shaping a landscape that remains to explore today.
Emotional Outcomes
Appreciation and awe for the unique place and living, diverse people descended from this story. Excitement to go and explore more.
Relevancy Exhibits tie directly to places just outside. When visitors immerse in the resource, they will put themselves in the story more readily.
Holistic Experience
Walking through time—and exploring the stories along this path—connect visitors to the people and places that define Pecos and the wider region.
Engaging Visitors
Immersive scenics and artifacts tell a broad story, interactives build scenic immersion and tell big concepts, A/V thoughtfully applied.
Family+Kid Approach
Immersive scenes with props and hands-on interactive experiences for visitors of all ages.
Artifacts Approach
Large cases share much more of the park’s collection than is currently on display, and help tell stories of intersections and continuity.
Flow Thru Space
Directed, chronological path, but with opportunities to cross eras and compare—especially between Kidder archaeology and the pueblo era.
Accessibility Approach
Tactile maps and elements (props, interactives) will augment the Audio Description. Audio voices at four key locations.
Impact on Interior
Significant impact—scenic recreations and large cases will minimize the interior aesthetics of the room.
