About this file

This document is an unclassified overview briefing on the Artillery Proof Gun Stand (PGS), a USG-developed interoperability platform for artillery testing and evaluation. The PGS is a hard-mounted, modular gun mount system initially fielded in 2023 with additional fielding planned for 2025. The platform eliminates the need to use operational weapon systems for testing purposes, thereby reducing wear and tear on existing artillery assets.

The PGS accommodates variable cannon configurations ranging from 105mm to 155mm (23-58 caliber length), with current operational configurations for M776 and M199 cannons and additional configurations in development. The system features a tube sleeve interface that can accommodate cannon diameters up to 13 inches, an adaptive recoil system, and a dedicated cable cutout for data acquisition. The platform has an elevation operational range of -2.5° to 72° and 360° traverse capability, engineered for a 30-year service life in harsh environments. The PGS is designed for transportability, separating into three subsystems with approximately four hours installation time, and can fit into a standard 40-foot ISO container while complying with US and European highway standards. The system supports ammunition evaluation (new/foreign ammunition, lot acceptance testing, interchangeability), cannon evaluation (proofing and interior ballistics assessment), and interoperability testing with standardized methodologies. The USG intends to standardize the PGS as the common interoperability platform for both Continental United States (CONUS) and Overseas Continental United States (OCONUS) locations.
