1. SCOPE
This appendix establishes the minimum performance, design, fabrication, installation, and test requirements for expandable, flexible, gravity skate wheel conveyors for the 628th Logistics Readiness Squadron (LRS) in the Flight Line Support Facility (FLSF) at Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina. The work shall be completed in accordance with this appendix, the Cover Purchase Description (PD), and Air Force (AF) Drawing BCH205-01.
This appendix covers all equipment, materials, and labor necessary to complete installation of the system.
2. APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS
Applicable documents shall be in accordance with section 2 of the Cover PD.
3. REQUIREMENTS
3.1. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
Ten (10) expandable, flexible, gravity skate wheel conveyor, hereafter referred to as expandable conveyors, shall be provided. The expandable conveyors shall transport small and medium items. The expandable conveyors shall provide a smooth flow of items over all skate wheel sections. The expandable conveyor shall be easily expandable and retractable and shall have the ability to be formed into a curved path or circular pattern. The expandable conveyor shall have standard lockable heavy-duty caster wheels mounted on the supports to allow relocation by one person. The casters shall be easily foot lockable and shall roll easily and smoothly. The expandable conveyor shall have a positive locking mechanism that enables one end of the section to attach and hold another section. The expandable conveyors shall be Nestaflex 226 (by FMH Conveyors), Model 22624024S (Grainger Item # 53UC47) steel skate and steel ball bearing or equivalent as approved by the COTR.
3.2. PHYSICAL AND PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS
3.2.1. DIMENSIONS
The expandable conveyors shall have a minimum 24-inch width (between frames) by a nominal 6-feet compacted length to 24-feet expanded length. The height of the conveying surface shall be adjustable over a minimum range of 28 inches to 44 inches above the floor.
Joint Base Charleston – App H - Page 2
3.2.1.1. EXPANSION RATIO
The expandable conveyor shall have the ability to fold from a fully extended length to a compressed storage length. The ratio of the fully extended length to the fully compressed length is the expansion ratio. The expansion ratio of the expandable conveyor shall be a minimum of 4:1.
3.2.1.2. FLEXIBILITY
The expandable conveyor shall be flexible such that it can convey items along curved surfaces or form a complete circle from a 24-foot long conveyor section. The expandable conveyor shall be self-tracking such that items placed on the expandable conveyor shall follow the conveyor path without side rails or engineered curves.
3.2.2. LOAD CAPACITY
The expandable conveyor shall have a minimum static load capacity of 200 pounds per linear foot when fully extended. A safety factor of at least 1.65 to 1 shall be provided. No expandable conveyor component shall exhibit deflection under load such that it impedes smooth operation of the expandable conveyor. No expandable conveyor component shall exhibit permanent deformation when loaded to full capacity.
3.2.3. SKATE WHEELS
The skate wheels of the expandable conveyor shall be minimum 1-15/16-inch diameter 12-gauge steel. There shall be a minimum of 1 wheel per axle for every 3 inches of conveyor width. The wheels shall be of steel construction and have hardened steel balls and raceways. The wheels shall be permanently lubricated and sealed. The exterior surfaces of the wheels shall be galvanized. The wheels shall provide an even carrying surface in all directions and shall be securely mounted. The skate wheels shall exhibit only rotational motion and shall not rotate in an eccentric manner during operation. The wheels shall be free rolling.
3.2.4. FRAMES AND SUPPORTS
The frames shall be minimum 11-gauge steel, or equivalent as approved by the Contracting Officer’s technical representative (COTR). The supports shall be 12-gauge minimum steel tubing bolted to the frame and cross braced with steel tubing, or equivalent as approved by the COTR. There shall be a minimum of

1 leg set every 4-feet of conveyor length when full extended plus 1 additional leg set for each expandable conveyor.
3.2.4.1. AXLES
The axles shall be a minimum 1/4-inch galvanized steel rods and shall be mounted on maximum 5-inch centers. All axles shall be of the bolt type with lock nuts, or equivalent as approved by the COTR. Axle connecting brackets shall be provided so that two or more expandable conveyors can be connected or to provide the capability of connecting the expandable conveyor to existing equipment. There shall be two axle connecting brackets per set and one set of brackets shall be provided with each expandable conveyor.
3.2.4.2. CASTERS
Swivel casters shall be provided on each leg support for the expandable conveyor. Casters shall allow mobility of the conveyor lines for repositioning inside the warehouse. Casters shall be a minimum of 5-inches in diameter and a minimum of 1- 1/2 inches wide, or equivalent as approved by the COTR. Casters shall have sealed steel ball bearings. The caster tires shall be non-marking rubber, polyurethane, or a similar material approved by the COTR. The caster tires shall be suitable to handle all loads. Casters shall be the locking type providing foot operation. When locks are engaged the conveyor lines shall be held stationary in place during normal operation. Casters shall be securely bolted or welded to each supporting leg of the expandable conveyor frame.
3.2.4.3. END STOP
A removable stop shall be provided at one end of the expandable conveyor. The stop shall be bolted to the expandable conveyor frame and shall extend the full width of the conveying surface.
The end stop shall extend a minimum of 4-inches above the conveying surface. The stop shall be of one-piece steel construction and minimum, 11-gauge steel.
4. QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS
4.1. INSPECTION
The system shall be inspected to verify that it meets all the requirements of sections 1, 2, and 3 of this appendix and the Cover PD. These inspections shall be completed as part of the
Joint Base Charleston – App H - Page 4 system checkout test and again as a part of the quality conformance test.
4.2. TESTS
The following tests shall be performed on the system as part of the system checkout test and again as a part of the quality conformance test.
No. Paragraph Description
1. 3.2.2. Extend each expandable conveyor to its maximum length. Load the middle 1/4 of each expandable conveyor with an evenly distributed load of 200 pounds per linear foot. Leave the load on conveyor for a minimum or 4 hours. Roll the load back and forth over the conveyor. Remove the load and inspect the expandable conveyor for damage. If conveyor deflection or other causes impede smooth operation of the expandable conveyor or if the expandable conveyor permanently deforms, the expandable conveyor fails this test.
2. 3.2.4.2. Roll each expandable conveyor across the floor.
Lock the caster wheels and attempt to move the expandable conveyor. If the expandable conveyor does not freely roll when the caster wheels are not locked, or if the expandable conveyor rolls when the caster wheels are locked, the expandable conveyor fails this test.
4.3. CERTIFICATIONS
The Contractor shall provide certification that the following requirements have been met. All certifications shall be provided in accordance with the Contract Data Requirements List.
No. Paragraph Certifications
1. 3.2.2. The expandable has load capacity safety factor of at least 1.65 to 1.
