PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.1 SEED MIXTURE
A. Grass Seed Mixture:
1. Baron Kentucky Blue Grass: 20 percent.
2. Southport Creeping Red Fescue Grass: 40 percent.
3. Norlea Perennial Rye: 40 percent.
2.2 SOIL MATERIALS
A. Topsoil, Type S2:
1. Excavated from site if it meets the requirements of the following: Fertile, agricultural soil, typical for locality, capable of sustaining vigorous plant growth, taken from drained site; free of subsoil, clay or impurities, plants, weeds and roots; pH value of minimum 5.4 and maximum 7.0.
2. Well drained homogeneous texture and of uniform grade without the admixture of subsoil material and entirely free of dense material, hardpan, sod or any other objectionable foreign material. The soil shall not contain stones larger than 0.25 inches.
3. Containing more than 20 percent and less than 40 percent organic matter in that portion of a sample passing a ¼ inch sieve when determine by the wet combustion method on a sample dried at 105 degrees C.
4. Containing a PH value within the range of 5.5 to 7.0 on that portion of the sample which passes the ¼” sieve.

2.4 SOURCE QUALITY CONTROL
A. Analyze to ascertain percentage of nitrogen, phosphorus, potash, soluble salt content, organic matter content, and pH value.
B. Provide recommendation for fertilizer and lime application rates for specified seed mix as result of testing.
C. Testing is not required when recent tests and certificates are available for imported topsoil. Submit these test results to testing laboratory. Indicate, by test results, information necessary to determine suitability.
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.1 EXAMINATION
A. Verify prepared soil base is ready to receive the Work of this section.
3.2 PREPARATION OF SUBSOIL
A. Prepare sub-soil to eliminate uneven areas and low spots. Maintain lines, levels, profiles and contours. Make changes in grade gradual. Blend slopes into level areas.
B. Remove foreign materials, weeds and undesirable plants and their roots. Remove contaminated sub-soil.
C. Scarify subsoil to depth of 3 inches where topsoil is to be placed. Repeat cultivation in areas where equipment, used for hauling and spreading topsoil, has compacted sub-soil.
3.3 PLACING TOPSOIL
A. Spread topsoil to minimum depth of 4 inches over area to be seeded. Rake until smooth.
B. Place topsoil during dry weather and on dry unfrozen subgrade.
C. Remove vegetable matter and foreign non-organic material from topsoil while spreading.
D. Grade topsoil to eliminate rough, low or soft areas, and to ensure positive drainage.
E. Install edging at periphery of seeded areas in straight lines to consistent depth.
3.4 FERTILIZING
A. Apply lime at application rate recommended by soil analysis. Work lime into top 3 inches of soil.
B. Apply fertilizer at application rate recommended by soil analysis.

C. Apply after smooth raking of topsoil.
D. Do not apply fertilizer at same time or with same machine used to apply seed.
E. Mix fertilizer thoroughly into upper 2 inches of topsoil.
F. Lightly water soil to aid dissipation of fertilizer. Irrigate top level of soil uniformly.
3.5 SEEDING
A. Apply seed at rate of 6 lbs per 1000 sq ft evenly in two intersecting directions. Rake in lightly.
B. Do not seed areas in excess of that which can be mulched on same day.
C. Do not sow immediately following rain, when ground is too dry, or when winds are over 12 mph.
D. Immediately following seeding, apply mulch to thickness of ¼ inches. Maintain clear of shrubs and trees.
E. Apply water with fine spray immediately after each area has been mulched. Saturate to 4 inches of soil.
3.6 SEED PROTECTION
A. Identify seeded areas with stakes and string around area periphery. Set string height to 18 inches.
B. Cover seeded slopes where grade is 4 inches per foot or greater with erosion fabric. Roll fabric onto slopes without stretching or pulling.
C. Lay fabric smoothly on surface, bury top end of each section in 6 inch deep excavated topsoil trench. Overlap edges and ends of adjacent rolls minimum 12 inches. Backfill trench and rake smooth, level with adjacent soil.
D. Secure outside edges and overlaps at 36 inch intervals with stakes.
E. Lightly dress slopes with topsoil to ensure close contact between fabric and soil.
F. At sides of ditches, lay fabric laps in direction of water flow. Lap ends and edges minimum 6 inches.
3.7 MAINTENANCE
A. Mow grass at regular intervals to maintain at maximum height of 2-1/2 inches. Do not cut more than 1/3 of grass blade at each mowing. Perform first mowing when seedlings are 40 percent higher than desired height.
