1.3 SUBMITTALS
A. Design Data:
1. Submit concrete mix design for each concrete strength. Submit separate mix designs when admixtures are required for the following:
a. Hot and cold weather concrete work.
b. Air entrained concrete work.
2. Identify mix ingredients and proportions, including admixtures.
1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Perform Work in accordance with ACI 301.
B. Acquire cement and aggregate from one source for Work.
Return Piping Replacement 033000-2
C. Conform to ACI 305 when concreting during hot weather.
D. Conform to ACI 306.1 when concreting during cold weather.
1.5 COORDINATION
A. Coordinate placement of joint devices with erection of concrete formwork and placement of form accessories.
PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.1 CONCRETE MATERIALS
A. Cement: ASTM C150, Type I - Normal.
B. Fine and Coarse Aggregates: ASTM C33.
C. Water: Clean and not detrimental to concrete.
2.2 ADMIXTURES
A. Air Entrainment: ASTM C260.
B. Chemical: ASTM C494 Type A - Water Reducing and Type F - Water Reducing, Mid- Range.
C. Fly Ash: ASTM C618 Class F or C.
2.3 ACCESSORIES
A. Bonding Agent: Latex emulsion.
B. Non-Shrink Grout: Premixed compound consisting of non-metallic aggregate, cement, water reducing and plasticizing agents; capable of developing minimum compressive strength of 2,400 psi in 48 hours and 7,000 psi in 28 days manufactured by Sonneborn or equivalent.
2.4 CONCRETE MIX
A. Mix and deliver concrete in accordance with ASTM C94, Alternative Procedure 1.
B. Provide concrete to the following mix design:
Unit Measurement
Compressive Strength (28 day) 3500 psi (Reference) Cement 490 pounds Fiber Reinforcement 1 ½ lbs per cubic yard
Return Piping Replacement 033000-3
Water/Cement Ratio (maximum) .47 by weight (mass) Aggregate Size (maximum) 1 1/2 inch Air Entrained 6 percent plus/minus 1 percent Admixture Water Reducer, Type F Admixture Mid Range Plasticizer, Type F Fly Ash Pozzolan Content: Maximum 15 percent of cement content.
Slump - Plus or minus 1 inch 6 inches.
C. Admixtures: Include admixture types and quantities indicated in concrete mix designs approved through submittal process.
1. Use accelerating admixtures in cold weather. Use of admixtures will not relax cold weather placement requirements.
2. Use calcium chloride only when approved by the structural engineer.
3. Use set retarding admixtures during hot weather.
4. Add air entraining agent to normal weight concrete mix for work exposed to exterior.
2.5 STEEL REINFORCEMENT
A. Reinforcing Bars: ASTM A 615/A 615M, Grade 60 (Grade 420), deformed.
B. Plain-Steel Wire: ASTM A 82, as drawn.
2.6 CURING MATERIALS
A. Absorptive Cover: AASHTO M 182, Class 2, burlap cloth made from jute or kenaf, weighing approximately 9 oz./sq. yd. (305 g/sq. m) dry.
B. Moisture-Retaining Cover: ASTM C 171, polyethylene film or white burlap-polyethylene sheet.
C. Water: Potable.
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.1 EXAMINATION
A. Verify requirements for concrete cover over reinforcement. All reinforcing steel shall have a minimum of 4 inches of concrete cover measured from the bottom and sides of the tunnel base slab.
B. Verify anchors, seats, plates, reinforcement and other items to be cast into concrete are accurately placed, positioned securely, and will not interfere with placing concrete.
Return Piping Replacement 033000-4
3.2 PREPARATION
A. Prepare previously placed concrete by cleaning with steel brush and applying bonding agent.
B. In locations where new concrete is doweled to existing work, drill holes in existing concrete, insert steel dowels and fill holes around dowels with epoxy grout.
3.3 PLACING CONCRETE
A. Place concrete in accordance with ACI 301.
B. Notify Architect/Engineer minimum 24 hours prior to commencement of operations.
C. Ensure reinforcement, inserts and embedded parts are not disturbed during concrete placement.
D. Place concrete continuously. Do not interrupt successive placement; do not permit cold joints to occur.
3.4 CURING AND PROTECTION
A. Immediately after placement, protect concrete from premature drying, excessively hot or cold temperatures, and mechanical injury.
B. Maintain concrete with minimal moisture loss at relatively constant temperature for period necessary for hydration of cement and hardening of concrete.
C. Wet cure concrete tunnel base slab for a period of at least 7 days.
3.5 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL
A. Field inspection and testing will be performed in accordance with ACI 301.
B. Provide free access to Work and cooperate with appointed firm.
C. Submit proposed mix design of each class of concrete to inspection and testing firm for review prior to commencement of Work.
D. Three concrete test cylinders will be taken for every 50 or less cu yds of each class of concrete placed.
E. One additional test cylinder will be taken during cold weather concreting, cured on job site under same conditions as concrete it represents.
F. One slump test will be taken for each set of test cylinders taken.
G. One air content test will be made for each set of test cylinders taken.
