1 SCOPE 172
This System Specification (SS), including appendices, establishes the performance requirements 173 for the United States Air Force (USAF) Advanced Pilot Training (APT) Ground Based Training 174
System (GBTS) Component of the APT program. 175
1.1 IDENTIFICATION 176
This SS is for the Ground Based Training System Configuration Items currently identified in 177
APT Program Statement of Work (SOW), Annex H. 178
1.2 SYSTEM OVERVIEW 179
The APT program will replace the T-38C used in the USAF’s Specialized Undergraduate Pilot 180
Training (SUPT) advanced phase fighter/bomber track, and in the Introduction to Fighter 181
Fundamentals (IFF) course. The APT program will provide student pilots with the foundational 182 flying skills and core competencies required to transition into current generation Fighters and 183
Bomber Aircraft. 184
The APT GBTS components are broken into three categories; Aircrew Training Devices (ATDs), 185
Ground Training Devices (GTDs), and Maintenance Training Devices (MTDs). This system 186 specification only addresses the first two categories of the GBTS components. 187
1.3 DOCUMENT OVERVIEW 188
The performance and verification requirements for the GBTS are documented in Sections 3 and 189
4, respectively, of this SS. (Note the performance and verification requirements for the aircraft 190 are documented in a separate SS.) This SS captures and conveys the threshold requirements for 191 the GBTS. (Note that the requirements designated as “trade space” identify threshold and 192 objective requirements to be traded as part of the proposed solution definition. Objective 193 requirements are identified in Appendix G.) This SS is developed using guidance from DID DI-194
IPSC-81431A, System/Subsystem Specification Data Item Description (DID) and MIL-STD-195
961E, Department of Defense (DoD) Standard Practice for Defense Specifications. In addition 196 to the five (5) major sections of the SS, additional appendices are included as necessary to 197 further define the requirements of the GBTS. 198
