Summary: COMDTINST 9085.1D - Naval Engineering Computer Aided Design Standards

This is a U.S. Coast Guard Commandant Instruction establishing technical standards for engineering drawing development for Hull, Mechanical, Electrical (HM&E), Ordnance, and Electronic systems for Coast Guard surface assets, effective June 2024. The instruction applies to all Coast Guard activities and commercial contractors developing engineering drawings and replaces the previous version COMDTINST 9085.1C. AutoCAD™ is the standardized computer-aided design system for Coast Guard surface assets, with the Surface Forces Logistics Center (SFLC) designated as the systems manager for all related issues.

The instruction establishes comprehensive technical requirements for drawing development, including mandatory use of SFLC standard drawing templates with specified sheet sizes (ranging from A Landscape at 12" x 9.5" to H-24 at 134" x 30"), required blocks and tables (title blocks, revision blocks, signature authority blocks, materials lists, and revision status tables), layer management protocols, and dimension standards. Additional requirements address model space geometry creation at full scale (1:1), paper space viewports at 1:1 scale, text specifications (Romans.shx font, minimum 0.1 inches height), line types and weights, color standards, drawing zones for reference purposes (alphabetical vertical zones and numeric horizontal zones), and embedding of external references prior to submission. The instruction also references applicable ASME, IEEE, ISO, AWS, MIL, ASTM, and ANSI standards for dimensions, symbols, welding, electrical diagrams, and structural specifications. Technical information management is handled by the Technical Information Management Branch (TIMB), and all drawings must be compatible with the current AutoCAD™ version on the Coast Guard Data Network (CGDN).

3. Dimension style STANDARD shall not be used.

4. Fractional dimensions shall not be “stacked”.

5. Dimension appearance shall remain consistent with all present and new DIMSTYLES.

6. Fractional unit (CG-FRAC) DIMSTYLES add an inch mark (") to the dimension as a suffix and shall not be used for angular dimensions. These are generally used for objects measuring up to 72".

7. Architectural unit (CG-ARCH) DIMSTYLES are generally used for objects measuring 6'-0" and over.

8. Millimeter with inch unit (CG-MMIN) DIMSTYLES are used when the border template geometry and associated blocks have been scaled up by a factor of 25.4.

9. Paper Space DIMSTYLES automatically scale to the viewport when the variable DIMASSOC is set to two (2).

10. Scale Factor (SF) DIMSTYLES are used in Paper Space but have a “measurement scale factor” of DIMLFAC assigned. SF styles must have the variable DIMASSOC set to 1 to work properly. These DIMSTYLES may be copied and renamed to accommodate additional scales if the DIMLFAC is changed to match the scale factor.

2-8

N. Text.

1. Text shall be “Romans.shx” font, except for in cases where text is used in illustrations.

3. Additional sheets within the CAD template may be utilized if space is required for continuation of information.

4. Existing files may be found where the wiring database (COED) is embedded into the AutoCADTM front matter file. These are no longer utilized and shall be deleted when the drawing is revised. CG-LIMS STIP stores the master database file, and this embedded file is no longer required.

T. Proofing Drawings Prior to Submission. Prior to submitting either a new or revised drawing to TIMB for check-in, several steps shall be followed:

1. Remove any unused block definitions, layers, line types, etc., to keep file size to a minimum.

2. Remove any geometry present in Model Space that is not depicted in a Paper Space view, unless needed for design development.

3. Remove any geometry or text outside of the drawing borders in Paper Space.

4. If a drawing was associated to a sheet set, the association must be removed prior to submission to avoid the lost set association error. To remove the association, open the drawing in the absence of the sheet set file and select “Remove” on the Lost Set Association dialog and save the file.

5. Delete any unused layout tabs.

6. Delete any unattached XREF paths and embed any XREFs.

7. Zoom to Extents on Sheet 1 and save the drawing in a format compatible with the most current version of AutoCADTM installed on the CGDN.

U. Plotting Instructions.
