Hello, My name is ___________________________. I work for __________________and I am a contracted inspector for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). I am here to assess your home and personal property for damage caused by the disaster so FEMA can determine if you are eligible for assistance from FEMA’s Individuals and Households Program (IHP). To help in your recovery, FEMA wants you to understand the home assessment process and the next steps in FEMA’s disaster assistance.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know you are an inspector with FEMA?

You may ask the inspector to show their badge to you. They carry an official photo ID, noting their federal or contracted status. An inspector can also confirm your FEMA application number. Inspectors will never ask for money.

How long will the assessment take?

It may take up to an hour to complete, depending on the amount of damage.

How will damage to my home be assessed?

Inspectors will look at the interior and exterior of your home for damage.

For the inspector’s safety, they will not use a ladder or enter enclosed areas like the attic or crawlspace.

How will damage to my personal property be assessed?

They will look at furnishings and appliances used on a daily basis for disaster caused damage.

Will the inspector need to see receipts or photos to confirm my damage?

They may ask to see receipts or photos if you began repairs before assessment. FEMA recommends you take photos, make a list of your losses, and keep all receipts to confirm your disaster expenses.

What happens after the assessment?

You should receive a decision letter from FEMA in the next 7-10 days through postal mail or in your DisasterAssistance.gov online account. The inspector does not make any eligibility decisions.

How will I know if I’m approved for assistance?

You will get a letter explaining any decision made. The letter will be sent through your choice of postal mail or in your DisasterAssistance.gov online account. It is important to read all letters you receive from FEMA. They may include important information on documents you may need to send FEMA to receive assistance and how to appeal if you disagree with FEMA’s decision.

You may be sent a direct deposit check from FEMA to your bank account before you receive FEMA’s letter. It is important to read your letter to understand what the money you get can be used for.

How will I know if I get a letter online?

If you have chosen electronic correspondence, an e-mail will be sent to the e-mail address you gave during registration. Access your online account at DisasterAssistance.gov to see the letter.

How do I create an online account?

To create an online account, visit DisasterAssistance.gov and select “Check Status”, which will take you to Login.gov, then choose the option “Create an account” and enter the requested information.

Do I have to create an online account?

No, an online account is not required. However, there are many benefits to creating an online account, like:

o Having your letters from FEMA sent electronically, making them available quicker.

o Making certain changes to your application.

o Uploading documents.

o Checking the status of your application.

Can FEMA still help me if I have insurance?

Yes, you may be eligible for assistance if your insurance settlement does not meet all your disaster needs. If you have not already done so, please contact your insurance provider to file a claim. FEMA may also be able to assist with non-insurable damage or losses. It is important to send your insurance settlement or denial to FEMA as soon as possible.

Where can I find information on assistance from FEMA?

Information about all the assistance FEMA offers can be found at fema.gov/assistance.

How can I find a shelter immediately if I can’t stay in my home?

You may locate a shelter by texting SHELTER and your ZIP code to 43362. Standard text message rates apply.

You may also locate shelters by visiting DisasterAssistance.gov.

How can I get help with an urgent need for food, water, or clothing?

For urgent food, clothing, and shelter needs, call 211 or 311 for local resources.

Where can I find emotional support?

Contact the Disaster Distress Helpline at 1-800-985-5990.

You may be randomly selected for a re-assessment as part of FEMA’s Quality Control program to evaluate inspector’s performance.

If you feel you have been discriminated against, contact the Civil Rights Unit within the Office of Civil Rights by email at FEMA-CivilRightsOffice@fema.dhs.gov or call 1-833-285-7448.

If you have questions about disaster assistance, call FEMA’s Helpline at 1-800-621-3362 or access your online account at DisasterAssistance.gov. If you use a video relay service, captioned telephone service, or other communication services, please provide FEMA the specific number assigned for that service.
