Section 204. — EXCAVATION AND EMBANKMENT

Construction Requirements

204.02 Roadway Definitions.

(a) Excavation. Excavation consists of the following:

(1) Roadway excavation. Material excavation from within the right-of-way or easement areas, except subexcavation covered in Subsection 204.02(a)(2) and structure excavation covered in Sections 208 and 209. Roadway excavations within the grading limits (toe of fill, top of cut, limits of disturbance) shown on Roadway sheets C-01 through C-13 includes all materials encountered regardless of its nature or characteristics. Specifically, to include the following:

(a) All roadway asphalt;

(b) Concrete driveways;

(c) Concrete gutter/cross pans;

(d) Asphalt sidewalks;

(e) Miscellaneous 6-in and landscaping curbs; and

(f) Concrete or timber stairs within grading limits.

204.06 Roadway Excavation.

(a) Rock cuts. Delete and replace with the following:

Rock excavation by means of rock blasting, will not be permitted.

204.10 Embankment Construction. Add the following:

Within the upper 2 feet of subgrade elevation, use embankment material with a R-Value of 40 or greater, according to AASHTO T 190, for all installed embankment.

Section 713. — ROADSIDE IMPROVEMENT MATERIAL

713.01(a) Furnished topsoil. Add the following:

Submit soil testing report and 1-quart sample for approval by CO.

713.03 Fertilizer. Replace with the with the following:

Furnish standard commercial grade dry formulated fertilizer conforming to the standards of the Association of Official Analytical Chemists International, applicable State and Federal regulations, and required minimum percentages of available nutrients.

Supply the fertilizer in new, clean, sealed, and properly labeled containers with name, mass, and guaranteed analysis of contents clearly marked.

Supply slow-release fertilizer tablets as required for planting excavation. Amending and general fertilizers should be granular slow release products unless otherwise approved in writing by CO.

A testing soils analysis report is needed to determine fertilizer and lime application rates.

Contractor to engage a qualified testing agency to perform preconstruction soil analyses on existing, on-site soil and, and imported soil. Contractor to furnish a written soil analysis report containing soil-amendment and fertilizer recommendations by the agency performing the testing.

Based on the test results, recommendations for soil treatments and soil amendments to be incorporated to produce satisfactory planting soil suitable for healthy, viable plants shall be stated in the report. Include, at a minimum, recommendations for nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium fertilization, and for micronutrients.

Soil analysis report shall state recommendations for fertilizers and soil amendment rates in weight per 1000 sq. ft. for 6-inch depth of soil, and state recommended liming rates for raising pH or sulfur for lowering pH according to the buffered acidity or buffered alkalinity in weight per 1000 sq. ft. for 6-inch depth of soil.

713.04 Seed. Add the following:

(1) Use the following native seed mix:

Rocky Mountain Native Grass Mixture (%’s can be +/- 2%) Slender Wheatgrass 20% Mountain Brome 20% Green Needlegrass 15% Thickspike Wheatgrass 15% Rocky Mountain Fescue 10% Blue Grama (Coated) 5%

(1) Size: 1 inch maximum

(2) Color: natural undyed brown

Submit 1-quart sample for approval by CO.

713.06 Planting Material. Add the following to the end of this section:

(f) Live Stakes. Live stakes consisting of live stems of shrubs or trees that are provided in an un-rooted condition and can establish roots and shoots if planted under proper conditions.

Live cuttings for live stakes shall be ½ to 1½ inches in diameter and 4 to 5 feet in length. Side branches shall be removed and the bark left intact prior to installation.

Buds on the stakes shall be oriented in an upward position. The basal ends (bottom) shall be tapered to a point for easy insertion into the soil. The top shall be cut smooth and square.

The source of all live cuttings shall be from purchased live branch material from a State certified nursery. The material shall meet all the specifications of this section.

Shrubs and young trees used in preparation of live stakes shall be cut from healthy plants growing within 100 miles of the project site directly above the ground. All cuts shall be smooth and the cut surface kept small. The use of large pruning shears or power saws may be required. Trees that are more than 3 inches in diameter shall be topped. The live materials collected between October 15 and March 1 shall be transported to the construction site within 1 day of harvesting and then cut to size, as specified above and on the details.

Stakes harvested between budding and leaf-off are not acceptable and will be rejected. Contractor shall provide documentation from supplier that the materials were harvested no more than 1 day prior to planting. Any deviation from these sourcing requirements requires approval of the CO. Documentation authenticating the date cuttings were acquired shall be submitted to CO prior to acceptance. Live Stakes Harvesting Location must be submitted and approved by CO.

713.08 Miscellaneous Planting Material. Add the following:

(h) Herbicide. Submit product label and manufacturer’s application instructions for approval prior to application.

(1) Pre-Emergent Herbicides (Selective and Nonselective): Apply to tree, shrub, and ground-cover areas according to manufacturer's written recommendations. Do not apply to seeded areas

(2) Post-Emergent Herbicides (Selective and Nonselective): Apply only as necessary to treat already-germinated weeds and according to manufacturer's written recommendations.

713.10 Sod. Replace with the following:

Furnish living, vigorous sod with a minimum soil depth of ½”. Provide seed species mix for approval by CO prior to purchase. Furnish a mix with a minimum of 95 % pure Bluegrass seed. Furnish sod with a dense root system that is reasonably free from noxious weeds and grasses. Before taking up the sod, cut the top growth to less than 3-inch height.
