Special Contract Requirements Project: WA JEFF 91420(1) Upper Hoh River Road Phase 2

Place elements to form a compact, dense mass. When placing on other logs, ensure the bottom of the log is in firm contact with underlying logs as much as possible. Use all specified elements to ensure density of ELJ unit is maximized. Do not exceed specified maximum unit dimensions of 80 feet long, 20 feet wide, and 23 feet high. Fill void spaces with coarse woody debris as elements are placed. Do not wait until ELJ unit is complete before placing coarse woody debris. Place minimum 1 foot of coarse woody debris over ELJ unit top and sides.

Each ELJ unit will get 60 cubic-yards of Class 6 riprap placed at the upstream end of the ELJ unit for keying the ELJ into the bank. Place the riprap to prevent water flowing around the bankside of the ELJ. Place 1/3 of the volume in Layer A. Place remaining 2/3 in Layer B against the bank.

Work the riprap into the log elements. Place riprap top surface at least 3 feet above the ELJ top surface.

647.11 Placing Channel Plug Unit. Construct Channel Plugs at locations shown on the plans.

Orient the elements as shown on the plans. Orientation is critical for deflecting flow away from the overbank area and achieving channel plug stability. Care must be taken to pack bundles as densely as possible and to place the bottoms in close contact with the floodplain ground surface for effectively controlling erosion under the bundles. Place the Channel Plug units in existing scour channels on the floodplain surface. Position the plugs to fill the scour channels and be perpendicular to flow in the channel. Use the existing Forest Access Road where possible for access. Construct a new 20-foot wide Temporary Access Road as needed for placing the channel plugs on the floodplain surface not accessible by the Forest Access Road. Locate the Temporary Access Road 200 feet away from Hoh River active channel edge. Active channel edge is defined as the start of the bank vegetation. Clear vegetation from the Temporary Access Road area only as needed for providing construction equipment access. Do not regrade or place aggregate on the Temporary Access Road. Do not disturb areas beyond the Forest Access Road or Temporary Access Road. Do not remove or modify the existing vegetation and large woody debris lining the Hoh River active channel edge. Scarify the Temporary Access Road surface after the Channel Plugs units are installed. Install the Doug fir and pole plantings as shown on the plans. Use low pressure tracked equipment for planting and scarification.

Each Channel Plug unit consists of 4 deflector-log bundles without dolos, 5 deflector rootwads, 8 cottonwood boles, 12 log piles, and 120 cubic-yards coarse woody debris. The log bundles are made of three logs, 20 to 22 feet long, 18 to 37 inches in DBH diameter, total log volume 110 to 150 ft3, and without attached rootwads. Wrap each log bundle with two wraps of steel chain according to Section 648. Center chain in middle of log bundles. Tighten chain to remove slack and prevent logs from rotating of sliding out of position. Each rootwad is 20 to 22 feet long, 18 to 37 inches in DBH diameter, and has an attached rootwad. Rootwads are placed on top of the log bundles with rootwad in the upstream direction. Space log piles and cottonwood boles evenly along the downstream side of the log bundles for increasing slippage resistance. Log piles are 20 feet long, 12 to 18 inches in dimeter, and 15 feet embedment. Cottonwood boles are 10 feet long, 12 to 18 inches in dimeter, and 5 feet embedment. Embed the log piles and cottonwood boles with a track hoe-mounted vibratory hammer. When placing logs on other logs, ensure the bottom of the log is in firm contact with underlying logs as much as possible. Work coarse woody debris into channel plug. Use all specified elements. Place minimum 1 foot of coarse woody debris over

(d) Loading equipment.

(e) Hauling equipment.

(f) Installation equipment.

(g) Installation methods.

All wood material delivered to the site will be inspected by the CO. Any wood material rejected by the CO will be immediately tagged and removed by contractor at contractor’s expense.

Deflector Log. Use non-decayed, unbroken, Douglas fir, spruce or cedar logs with no attached rootwads. Each log is 18 to 37 inches DBH, in diameter (longest dimension) measured at either of the cut ends and 20 to 22 feet long.

Deflector Rootwad. Use non-decayed, unbroken, Douglas fir, spruce, hemlock, or cedar logs with an attached rootwad. Each log is 18 to 37 inches DBH, in trunk diameter (longest dimension) measured at cut end and 20 to 22 feet long measured from base of root to trunk cut end. Minimum root length measured from base of trunk is 6 feet.

Coarse Woody Debris. Use an even mixture of non-decayed, Douglas fir, cedar, hemlock, cottonwood or alder branches, limbs, twigs, and other residue, 1 to 8 inches in diameter dbh. Use coarse woody debris generated from the harvest of the deflector logs or deflector rootwads and from general site clearing.

713.23 Biotic soil amendment. (Added Subsection).

The biotic soil amendment shall have a minimum of 90 percent organic matter (organic growth medium) and contain other materials designed to improve seed germination, vegetation establishment and overall soil health. In addition to organic growth medium BSA shall include mycorrhizal fungi and a minimum of three of the following ingredients:

(a) Biochar;

(b) Humus/Humic Acid;

(c) Porous Ceramics or Water-holding Organic Polymers;

(d) Seaweed Extract;

(e) Beneficial Bacteria; and

(f) Micronutrients.

The Contractor shall provide test results dated within 3 years prior to the date of application from an independent, accredited laboratory that has been recognized by an accrediting organization to test and evaluate products to product safety standards. The independent, accredited lab shall be free from commercial, financial, and other pressures that may influence the results of the testing and evaluation process.
