67716 - CCS FTHL MONITORING - Announcement L15AS00117
Project Title:
CCS FLAT-TAILED HORNED LIZARD MONITORING
Description:
FTHL monitoring will continue into the future as directed by the Interagency Coordinating Committee. Methodology was perfected from the 1979 monitoring and a report was released in April 2002. Monitoring plots occur in all MA's including East Mesa, West Mesa and the Yuha. Long term plots have been established in each MA to track trends in populations. The recipient must have current knowledge of project and experience to perform this task. The monitoring will begins after award of agreement (August) and continues for approximately nine weeks. The recipient will mark and recapture FTHLs to determine population estimates and trends. In the past a University has provided an intern to continue their educational experience/degree.
Geographic Description:
IMPERIAL COUNTY CA
Benefits:
In 1997 a conservation agreement among federal agencies was signed which assisted in the withdrawal of the proposed threatened listing of the lizard by USFWS. In August of 2001, a federal appeals court ordered USFWS to reconsider the lizard's status. USFWS re-proposed the listing in December 2001. The species was again proposed and withdrawn in 2006 in part due to our efforts with the FTHL Strategy. To address the status of the lizard, BLM has monitored its distribution and abundance since 1979. The BLM now monitors for FTHL with a mark/recapture protocol to comply with the management strategy. This project is necessary to assist in making informed decisions on the listing of the lizard and also on land management within its range.
