42409 - PARTNERSHIP- BEAR CREEK REVEG -Announcement L15AS00117

Project Title:
BEAR CREEK RIPARIAN REVEGETATION
Description:
This project will continue initial revegetation efforts along the riparian habitat of Bear Creek, a creek which is functioning at risk according to the Bureau's PFC guidelines. It is a multi-year project. Revegetation with native species is a follow-up project to ongoing tamarisk eradication along Bear Creek. Tamarisk eradication, whether by herbicide or biocontrol with leaf-eating beetles, leaves vegetative voids that can be reinfested with other noxious plants, unless native species are planted to fill these voids. The riparian habitat of Bear Creek is a very harsh environment due to high levels of salinity, alkalinity, and high concentrations of mercury and boron. This makes it very difficult for the few native species that can tolerate these environmental parameters to be able to survive and continue reproducing. This project will involve revegetation with native species at suitable sites along the 7-mile stretch of Bear Creek under BLM management. On the ground work will be done and will include propagating, planting, and nurturing (seasonal irrigation, protection from herbivores) native plants which have been shown from a previous Applications of Science study on Bear Creek to be suitable candidates for revegetation of Bear Creek following tamarisk eradication. Additional work in the form of effectiveness monitoring will be implemented by BLM staff.
Geographic Description:
BEAR CREEK, CACHE CREEK NATURAL AREA
Benefits:
This project will help to minimize reinfestation of riparian habitat by additional noxious species in sites where tamarisk has been eradicated through the use of herbicides or by biocontrol leaf-eating beetles. Few native plants are found along Bear Creek, primarily due to harsh environmental conditions caused from high salinity levels (due to the dominance of tamarisk) and high alkalinity levels (boron, mercury) found in Bear Creek. Additionally, Bear Creek is functioning at risk, according to the Bureau's PFC guidelines. Now that tamarisk is being eradicated, salinity levels will likely begin to decrease, making revegetation with native species much more possible as these species will have a better chance of surviving with lowering salinity levels following tamarisk eradication. The project will cover habitat that is suitable for revegetation along the 7-mile stretch of Bear Creek under BLM management. Once native species become established along the creek, natural revegetation downstream will follow. Habitat conditions will significantly improve for a variety of species including big game, upland, waterfowl, wading birds, and neotropical birds. For each year of this project, one unit of Project Element JP will be accomplished.
Feasibility:
The BLM has prepared the NEPA documentation for herbicide application and will have the work done by contract if this alternative is chosen. An Environmental Assessment has also been previously prepared for the use of biocontrol leaf-eating beetles on Bear Creek. So, whichever method is chosen, NEPA has already been completed. Partners in this project will include the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Wildlife Conservation Board, and U.C. Davis. Revegetation of this project area will take several years to complete. Each year through this project, effectiveness monitoring will be implemented by BLM staff.
Support - Opposition:
This project has broad support from a coalition of conservationists, environmental groups, landowners, and government agencies operating within the Cache Creek watershed. Partnerships for this project include Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, UC Davis, California Native Plant Society, Colusa and Glenn Count Resource Conservation Districts, Tuleyome Environmental Organization, and the Rumsey Rancheria. Many other grants (Cal-Fed, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, Yolo and Lake County Resource Conservation Districts, Environmental Protection Agency, and others) have provided funding for the past 10+ years throughout the watershed for habitat restoration, including revegetation with native species.
