26955 - CCS- BIG MORONGO – Announcement L15AS00117

Project Title:
CCS REC VISITOR SERVICES BIG MORONGO CANYON ACEC/PRESERVE
Description:
Continue BLM management of the Big Morongo Canyon Preserve/ACEC through cooperation with a non-profit cooperative association. Funding would be used to provide support and management for visitor services, interpretation, and environmental education programs in the ACEC. This includes development and presentation of 20 new interpretation and environmental education programs, including school programs, public walks, and public lectures. The recipient provides guided walks, interpretation, school programs, trail maintenance, and other visitor services that BLM would be unable to provide at the preserve. The Preserve is an internationally known destination for birders and naturalists. The Preserve also provides an important resource for the local community as an education site and as open space for nature-oriented recreation.
Geographic Description:
MORONGO VALLEY, SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY
Benefits:
This is one of the most visible recreation and natural sites managed by the Field Office. This is also a major attraction for the local communities, receiving nearly 100,000 visits each year and contributing to the regional tourism economic base. The recipient shall support important visitor services, interpretation, and environmental education at the Preserve. The BLM would be unable to provide the daily personal services and guided walks for which the BMCP has become famous, without BLM volunteers supported by the recipient.
Feasibility:
This is for a non-profit group to recruit and train new docents to provide visitor services and educational programs for local schools. The BLM will support the recipient and provide funding to pay for publications, educational equipment and supplies, and maintenance of the education/science center. The recipient will support their programs and meet BLM goals for the Big Morongo Canyon Preserve/ACEC.
Support - Opposition:
This ongoing project will be implemented through an assistance agreement with the recipient. The recipient is an important resource and provides additional tourism related benefits to the local communities of the Morongo Basin and Coachella Valley. Support for the recipient and the Preserve is widespread among the political, tourism, and economic establishment of the local region.
